History buffs and military aficionados alike are sure to appreciate the new exhibit at the Money Museum, “Trenches to Treaties: World War I in Remembrance,” commemorating the 100th anniversary of “The Great War.” Operated by the American Numismatic Association (ANA), the Money Museum exhibit honors WWI soldiers through a spectacular display of medals and military decorations such as the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, the French Croix de Guerre (Cross of War) and the Victoria Cross (the highest award of the United Kingdom).

“You call these baubles, well, it is with baubles that men are led… Do you think that you would be able to make men fight by reasoning? Never. That is good only for the scholar in his study. The Soldier needs glory, distinctions, rewards.” —Napoleon Bonaparte
During World War I, military decorations were created or revived by all combatant nations. Medals were awarded for bravery, heroism, and service in battles or campaigns. Strictly speaking, medals incorporate all awards that hang from a ribbon, while decorations are awarded only for battlefield accomplishments.
Military decorations have been awarded since ancient times. Egypt had the Order of the Golden Collar during the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 B.C.) and the Romans had torcs (neck bands), armillae (arm bands) and phalerae (metal discs), often in gold or silver, for bravery and military achievements. Richly jeweled necklaces and bracelets were given during the early Middle Ages, which became the basis for modern orders of chivalry and military decorations.

May 19, 2017 | ANA, News
15 May 2017 Virginia Beach, VA. CDN Publishing is excited to announce a collaboration between the 64-year old publishing company and the world’s premiere numismatic collector organization, the American Numismatic Association (ANA). Starting with the June issue, the ANA’s monthly magazine, the Numismatist, will feature eight or more pages of dedicated pricing content derived from current CDN published wholesale pricing.
According to John Feigenbaum, CDN Publisher, “the published pricing in the Numismatist is one of our newest products, called Collector’s Price Guide, or CPG. CPG was launched a few months ago in response to dealers who have long been frustrated by the disconnect between established Greysheet pricing, and unrelated published retail values that don’t reflect these wholesale levels. CPG values are derived from CDN wholesale and move in direct reaction to the wholesale market so collectors and dealers will finally be in sync.”
CPG Pricing Page in The NumismatistCPG values are available to any coin dealer who can program an API data exchange to display single pricing values on web pages with their coins for sale or auction. To date, numerous companies have taken advantage of this service, including Heritage Auctions, Stack’s-Bowers Auctions, David Lawrence Rare Coins and others.
The Numismatist is the first and only publication to print CPG value charts in a grid format for their readers. According to CDN Editor, Patrick Ian Perez, “we are thrilled to launch the print-format CPG with a partner like the ANA. When the opportunity arose to work together, we were really excited to work with Kim Kiick (ANA Executive Director), Jeff Garrett (ANA President) and the production staff at the Numismatist, led by Barbara Gregory, has been a joy to work with.” Perez continued to say that, “we are most interested in the reader feedback, of course, but we feel strongly that including CPG pricing in this important publication will raise awareness for both of our organizations, and help collectors with the most accurate pricing available.”
Initial plans for publication including a three-month rotation of pricing, starting with early coppers and nickel coinage in June. Silver coinage will be published in July, followed by gold coin prices in August. The sequence will repeat itself in cycle.

May 19, 2017 | ANA, Announcements
The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is excited to announce a collaboration between its flagship publication, The Numismatist, and The Coin Dealer Newsletter (CDN), providing ANA members a reliable retail pricing tool for collectable U.S. and Early American coinage. Beginning in June, ANA members can access the “Collector’s Price Guide” (CPG) in The Numismatist. Each monthly 8- to 10-page supplement offers up-to-date values for a variety of U.S. coin types and denominations on a regular rotation, with early coppers, cents and nickels in June, silver in July, and gold in August.
“The Numismatist is one of the great publications of our hobby and the cornerstone benefit of ANA membership,” says ANA President Jeff Garrett. “The new CDN retail price guide will make The Numismatist an indispensable resource for collectors. This partnership is one of the most important developments for the organization in many years.”
The “Collector’s Price Guide” is intended as a hobby resource only and should be used in combination with other numismatic references as part of a practical, informed purchasing plan. CDN Publishing is solely responsible for the content of the guide.
According to CDN Publisher John Feigenbaum, “An online version of CPG was launched a few months ago in response to dealers who have long been frustrated by the disconnect between established Greysheet pricing and unrelated retail values that don’t reflect wholesale levels. CPG values are derived from the Greysheet and move in direct reaction to the wholesale market so collectors and dealers can finally be in sync.”
“It’s a dream come true to have coin-pricing information available in The Numismatist,” says ANA Executive Director Kim Kiick. “This is a huge benefit to our members, and we are grateful to John Feigenbaum for approaching us with this opportunity.”

The American Numismatic Association (ANA) Road Show will make its next stop at the Las Vegas Numismatic Society Diamond Jubilee Coin Show, May 18-20, at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, located at 3000 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89109.
The ANA Road Show gives members and collectors around the country an opportunity to see some of the most impressive items from the ANA’s Edward C. Rochette Money Museum. Items to be displayed at the Diamond Jubilee Coin Show include:
- The 1804 dollar—Recognized by collectors as “The King of U.S. Coins,” the specimen is extremely rare, with only 15 known examples. No U.S. dollars dated 1804 were actually struck in that year; Class I specimens were struck in 1834-1835 as diplomatic gifts (eight known), while Class II and III specimens (six known) were struck during the 1850s for collectors. The Class III Idler/Bebee specimen was donated to the ANA by Aubrey and Adeline Bebee in 1991.
- The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel—One of the most valuable of all U.S. coins, it was one of five such nickels struck under mysterious circumstances at the Philadelphia Mint. The coins were unknown until 1920 when Samuel Brown, a former U.S. Mint employee, displayed all five at an ANA convention, causing a stir.
- The Famous Errors exhibit—A highlight reel of some of the most notable numismatic bloopers, the exhibit includes the 1955 doubled-die Lincoln cent, the classic 1937 D “three legged” buffalo nickel, the 2004 Wisconsin “extra leaf” quarter and the 2007-2009 “godless” dollars. All of these coins feature errors that are easily visible to the naked eye, making them popular collector items and curiosity pieces.
“The ANA Road Show adds an extra level of excitement to the LVNS Diamond Jubilee celebration,” said Fred Kuch, LVNS Trust Chairman. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for hobbyists to see some of the most legendary numismatic treasures from the Money Museum.”
The Las Vegas Numismatic Society Diamond Jubilee Coin Show is open to the public interested in buying and selling rare coins, vintage paper money and other numismatic rarities. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 18-19, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20. Visit www.lvns.club for additional show details.

Attendees will gain confidence in evaluating surface marks, strike, luster, and eye appeal through interactive discussions, group activities, and individual study of hundreds of coins from the ANA grading set.
- Instructor: Michael Faraone, professional numismatist and former grader, Professional Coin Grading Service.
- Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Mar. 16-17)
- Cost: $259 for ANA and LVNS members/$359 for non-members
