Spectacular Exhibits
Museum Showcase features rare and historic items from the ANA’s Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., and includes:
- The 1804 Draped Bust U.S. Silver Dollar: The “King of U.S. Coins” is one of only 15 known examples and is insured for $4 million.
- The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel: One of five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels made under mysterious circumstances at the Philadelphia Mint.
- Bebee Error Notes: Rarely seen specimens from the famous Bebee collection of paper currency and uncut notes.
- A 1933 $10 Eagle: In March 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt halted the release of gold coins from the Mint to help reverse the tide of the Depression. This act created noteworthy gold coin rarities, including the spectacular 1933 eagle.
- The 1943/44 Cent Case: In 1943, to save copper for World War II, the U.S. Mint produced Lincoln cents using steel instead of the normal bronze alloy. A few 1943 Lincoln cents were mistakenly made from left over 1942 bronze blanks instead of the zinc-coated steel creating an instant sensation. The same accident occurred in 1944 when the Mint returned to bronze cents – a few of the steel cent blanks were struck as 1944 cents. On display courtesy of the Dazzling Rarities Collection.

“Money of Empire: Elizabeth to Elizabeth”
The British Empire, more than any other, set the stage for the modern world in which we live. From small origins during the late 16th century, the British Empire expanded to become the largest empire in history and the most powerful global economic and military power for over a century. To celebrate the history of the British Empire, the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum, operated by the American Numismatic Association, is unveiling its newest exhibit, “Money of Empire: Elizabeth to Elizabeth,” on March 7.
“The Money of Empire exhibit will take visitors on a numismatic tour of the British Empire and explore the history of the Kings and Queens of the UK from the time of Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II through their money and medals,” said Douglas Mudd, museum curator. The new exhibit will be on display through April 2020.
Sixty-two modern nations were once part of the British Empire, most of which are now part of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth consists of 53 member states united by language, history, culture and shared values. Sixteen of the countries recognize the British monarch as their head of state and continue to display Elizabeth II on their coinage – making her image the most common numismatic portrait worldwide.
Notable artifacts on display include:
- The Armada medal. The silver medal was issued in 1588 to celebrate the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the English Navy. Since the Armada was aimed mainly against Elizabeth, the head of the Anglican Church, its cause was viewed as an attack upon the Church itself and is clearly represented on the reverse.
- An Elizabeth I, gold 1/2 Pound, 1560-61. An early English machine-struck gold coin, the piece is a rare and beautiful example of Elizabethan coinage. The exhibit has a seldom-seen set of Elizabethan gold and silver coins on display.
- An Elizabeth I, silver 8 Real Portcullis money, 1600. This was the first English trade coin struck specifically for use in Asia. A complete denomination set is on display, a numismatic rarity.
- A Charles I, gold triple Unite, 1642, Oxford mint. This rare gold coin features Charles’ wartime proclamation: Religio Protestantium, Leges Angliae, Libertas Parliamenti (Protestant Religion, English Laws, Liberty of Parliament).
Money Museum Background
The Money Museum includes an extensive and ever-growing collection of historical numismatic treasures. This one-of-a-kind facility showcases some of the most valuable and significant numismatic items the public cannot see anywhere else. Rarities include the Harry W. Bass Jr. exhibit, one of the most complete U.S. gold coin collections ever assembled, and two of the 15 known 1804 dollars valued together at $6 million.
The Money Museum is located at 818 N. Cascade Ave, adjacent to the campus of Colorado College and next door to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Museum hours of operation are Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30 am-5 pm. Admission is $8 ($6 for seniors, military and students). Kids 12 and under are free. “Discover the Past, Envision the Future”
To recognize the role of numismatics in discoveries and innovation, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) selected “Discover the Past, Envision the Future” as the theme for the 96th annual National Coin Week, April 21-27. The theme was provided by ANA member Dennis Tucker.
The Association will host a variety of National Coin Week activities online and at the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo. Events and educational content focuses on U.S. and world coins throughout history, commemorative medals, monetary unions, designs on euro notes and more.
ANA-sponsored activities for National Coin Week include:

- A contest for ANA members to use their creative talents to design a coin released in 2069.
- Online daily trivia challenges. Every day of National Coin Week, a new question will be released on the ANA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts and www.NationalCoinWeek.org. Participants submit their answers online for a chance to win prizes.
- The annual coin club trivia challenge, where ANA member clubs test their numismatic knowledge and compete for prizes.
- Online resources including articles from The Numismatist, promotional documents, links and suggestions from the ANA library.
- An open house at the Money Museum on Saturday, April 27, which will include free admission, activities for children and adults, and the minting of the 2019 National Coin Week medallette in the museum’s Mini-Mint.
“Money has long been used to commemorate discovery and invention,” said Andy Dickes, ANA collections manager and coordinator of National Coin Week. “Feats such as the printing press, vaccines, the automobile and reaching the summit of Mount Everest are featured in numismatics. The 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing this year is a great time to celebrate all these achievements.”
Prizes for the design contest and club trivia challenge include:
- Grand prize – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Five Ounce Proof Silver Dollar
- Second prize – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar
- Third prize – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Clad Half Dollar

Feb 23, 2019 | ANA, Announcements, Shows & Conventions
In 2015 the American Numismatic Association (ANA) introduced the ANA Legacy Series to recognize hobby icons and help create a record of their contributions. The series continues today, held in conjunction with ANA conventions. They consist of live interviews with notables in the coin community and honors individuals who have profoundly impacted the hobby, giving listeners a greater sense of the subjects’ lives and achievements.
The 10th installment of this series will take place on Thursday, March 28, at 3 p.m. during the ANA National Money ShowⓇ at Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center (Room 414). In the spotlight will be the multifaceted artist and former United States Mint Engraver Don Everhart.
Born in York, Penn., in 1949, Everhart attended Kutztown State University where he obtained a degree in fine arts with a concentration in painting in 1972. He was hired by The Franklin Mint in 1973; he became a staff sculptor a year later and went on to execute coinage for Guyana, Jamaica and the Philippines.
Everhart left The Franklin Mint in 1980 to pursue a freelance career. His clients included The Walt Disney Company, Tiffany & Co., Georgetown University and the British Royal Mint. In 1994 he received the ANA’s Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture.
In 2004 Everhart joined the staff of the U.S. Mint as a sculptor-engraver and later was promoted to lead sculptor. He designed the curved reverse of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame half dollar, $1 and $5; the reverse of the 2015 March of Dimes $1; the reverse of the 2006 Nevada State Quarter; and the reverse of the 2006 Benjamin Franklin $1. In addition, he designed more than 30 Congressional Gold Medals, and created and/or sculpted Presidential Medals for George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
World Coin News presented Everhart with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, The British Museum, the American Numismatic Society and the National Sculpture Society. He served the American Medallic Sculpture Association as president in 1993-94.
Everhart retired from the U.S. Mint in July 2017 and today pursues his craft in West Chester, Pennsylvania. His Legacy Series interview in Pittsburgh is free and open to all ANA members and guests, but reservations are required. To reserve a seat, call 1-800-514-2646. Convention-goers who would like to learn more about the artist and his work are invited to attend Everhart’s “Money Talks” presentation at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 28, in Room 411.

There are members of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) who go above and beyond to share their passion for the hobby. These are the individuals who help the hobby evolve. Last summer, one such dedicated ANA member passed away, leaving behind a numismatic legacy dedicated to nurturing the next generation of numismatists.
Charles “Charlie” Browne was a passionate numismatist, educator, mentor and friend to many collectors during his storied life. The long-time ANA member taught at the ANA’s Summer Seminar since 2005. To pay homage to Charles, and support the cause he was most passionate about, a scholarship has been established benefitting Summer Seminar students (ages 15-25) who want to enroll in “Advanced United States Coin Grading and Problem Coins” offered during session two (June 22-27).
The Charles O. Browne Memorial Scholarship will fund one student for each year that Charlie volunteered his time instructing at the ANA Summer Seminar. Applications for the scholarship are being accepted until March 15. To apply, visit www.money.org/ANA-summer-seminar-scholarships, call (719) 482-9810 or email seminars@money.org.
“It is hard to explain what a joy it has been to volunteer in this capacity and to see the students’ anxiety disappear as their confidence grows,” said Browne in 2014. “Numismatics has helped me enjoy every aspect of life.”
To honor a devoted educator and support the Charles O. Browne Scholarship, contact Donna Frater, ANA development manager, at (719) 482-9856 or email dfrater@money.org about donation options.
Summer Seminar is a once-a-year opportunity for numismatic learning and camaraderie that offers students a varied selection of week-long courses designed for discovery or continued study. For 50 years, Summer Seminar has featured classes to suit virtually every collector’s hobby needs. Most importantly, everyone attending Summer Seminar shares a common trait: a passion for numismatics.
Other ANA scholarships available to Summer Seminar attendees (both young numismatists and adults) include the Eric P. Newman Young Numismatist scholarship, the ANA Young Numismatist Scholarship Program, the Robert Lecce Advanced Scholarship Program and the Art of Engraving Scholarship. The deadlines for these applications are Feb. 1 and March 15, respectively.

Applications for college scholarships provided by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) are being accepted through March 15. The scholarship fund was established in 2014 to provide a graduating high school senior who is also a member of the ANA with $1,000 to use at the university, community college, or trade school of the student’s choice. Scholarship winners will be chosen based on numismatic merit and financial need.
The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, or supplies directly related to class requirements. Up to two scholarships may be awarded annually. Students with a full class schedule, who maintain a B average throughout their higher education, can receive the $1,000 scholarship up to four years.
“The ANA’s primary goal is education,” said Rod Gillis, the ANA’s education director. “Generally, students who are involved in numismatics are the best and brightest scholars. It stands to reason that we should do all that we can to invest in our members at such a critical time in their lives.”
Besides holding membership in the ANA, applicants must be a graduating high school senior with a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.0. The winning students may use the scholarship at any two- or four-year college, university, or trade school within the United States.
Two letters of reference must be sent on the applicant’s behalf. The authors of the references may not be family members. Reference letters must be submitted by the person writing the reference, not the scholarship applicant, and must be received at the ANA by March 15.
The first scholarship was graciously underwritten by Brian Fanton, ANA Education & Young Numismatist Committee Chair and former ANA Governor, and Walter Ostromecki Jr., ANA Governor and past President. Funds for future scholarships will be raised through donations.
Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2019. Completed applications and references should be sent to:
