Designs reflecting the achievements of Mankiller, Otero-Warren, and Wong, along with those of celebrated author Maya Angelou and trailblazing astronaut Dr. Sally Ride, will be featured on circulating and numismatic American Women Quarters Program coins beginning in 2022.
“Courageous women have made countless contributions throughout our great Nation’s history,” said Mint Director David J. Ryder. “The American Women Quarters Program is a unique opportunity to honor a broad and diverse group of women whose achievements, triumphs, and legacies reflect the strength and resilience of our Nation. We look forward to sharing their stories.”
Authorized by Public Law 116-330—the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020—the American Women Quarters Program will feature coins with reverse (tails) designs emblematic of the accomplishments and contributions of prominent American women. Contributions may come from a wide spectrum of fields including, but not limited to, suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored will come from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. As required by the Public Law, no living person will be featured in the coin designs, and thus all the women honored must be deceased. The Mint will issue up to five coins with different reverse designs annually over the four-year period from 2022 through 2025.
The obverse (heads) of coins in the American Women Quarters Program will continue to feature a likeness of George Washington designed in a manner to distinguish it from the current image.
As stipulated by the Public Law, the Secretary of the Treasury selects the women to be honored following consultation with the Smithsonian Institution’s American Women’s History Initiative, the National Women’s History Museum, and the Congressional Bipartisan Women’s Caucus.
The public is invited to submit recommendations for women to be honored via the following web portal established by the National Women’s History Museum: https://forms.gle/3BgR3BLbFfJ69XdYA.
The Mint will release additional details about the American Women Quarters Program in the coming months.

The never-before-seen exhibit will showcase hundreds of superb condition coins, including the famous King of Siam proof set
For the first time ever, the public will be able to see the superb quality type set of more than 400 U.S. coins from the acclaimed Tyrant Collection (TheTyrantCollection.com) at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money (WorldsFairofMoney.com), August 10-14. Ranging from 1793 to 1964, many of these historic coins are the finest known of their kind.
The centerpiece of the extraordinary exhibit will be the legendary King of Siam proof set which was originally presented in 1836 by the U.S. State Department to the King of Siam (now Thailand) as a gift on behalf of President Andrew Jackson.
Hosted by the nonprofit American Numismatic Association (ANA), the World’s Fair of Money is considered the biggest week of the year for collectors of coins, paper money, tokens and medals. The event traditionally features expansive educational forums led by notable speakers sharing their numismatic expertise, exhibits of rare treasures from private collectors, hundreds of coin dealers buying and selling numismatic items in all price ranges, and major auctions.

“This is the first time in over a decade that the full, fabled King of Siam set will be publicly displayed, and we’re delighted the set – in addition to the superb U.S. type coins – will be at the World’s Fair of Money,” said Kim Kiick, executive director of the ANA. “The unique King of Siam set will be accompanied by the leather-covered wood box that contained the presentation coins given 185 years ago to Rama III, the King of Siam. The ship’s log from the USS Peacock on that important diplomatic mission will also be displayed.”
The legendary set’s coins range in denomination from an 1834 Classic Head copper half cent to an 1804 “Plain 4” Heraldic Eagle gold $10. A renowned Class I 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar graded PCGS PR67 is also included.

Among the many highlights of the “U.S. Type Coins from the Tyrant Collection” exhibit at the 2021 Chicago World’s Fair of Money will be this 1793 Flowing Hair “Chain AMERI” large cent, graded PCGS SP65. (Photo credit: Professional Coin Grading Service)
“The entire, incomparable exhibit, entitled ‘U.S. Type Coins from The Tyrant Collection,’ is insured for $100 million,” said Ira Goldberg, CEO of Goldberg Coins and Collectibles, Inc. in Los Angeles, California. He is among those who have assisted the coins’ owner in building the collection of U.S. world and ancient coins that is often described as the world’s most valuable rare coin collection in private hands.
“The display will cover all U.S. types and sub-types, circulation strikes and proofs, from 1793 Liberty Cap half cents through the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Ultra High Relief $20 and everything in between to 1964. This undoubtedly will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all these historic coins together,” explained Goldberg.
Although The Tyrant Collection owner wants to remain anonymous, he has been displaying portions of his ancient, world and U.S. coins for their educational value, one segment at a time, in a continuing series of themed exhibits that began in 2018 in California. Those exhibitions were suspended in early 2020 until now because of the pandemic.
In addition to the King of Siam set, a few of the many other highlights of the exhibit include:
- 1793 S-1 Flowing Hair “Chain AMERI” large cent, graded PCGS SP65;
- 1796 JR-1 Draped Bust, Small Eagle dime, PCGS SP67 CAC ex. Simpson Collection;
- 1797 O-101a Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollar, PCGS MS66 CAC ex. Pogue Collection;
- 1795 Draped Bust, Small Eagle dollar, PCGS SP66, ex. Garrett, Hayes and Pogue Collections;
- 1796 BD-2 Draped Bust, No Star quarter eagle, PCGS MS65 ex. Jung Collection; and
- 1907 Ultra High Relief double eagle, PCGS PR68, ex. Augustus Saint-Gaudens estate.
Special display cases with LED lighting were constructed for The Tyrant Collection exhibits, and each coin’s obverse and reverse is shown with enlarged, color photographs for easy viewing. Detailed catalogs with information and superb illustrations about each coin in the exhibit will be available at the convention.
The World’s Fair of Money will be held in Hall A of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road, in Rosemont, a suburb of Chicago, Ill. Public hours are Tuesday, August 10, from 1 to 5:30 pm; Wednesday through Friday, August 11-13, from 10 am to 5:30 pm; and Saturday, August 14, from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Health and safety protocols will be in effect.
Admission for ANA members is free. Admission Tuesday through Friday is $10 daily or $25 for a three-day pass for non-members. Children 12 and under are admitted free daily and admission is free for everyone on Saturday. Additional information can be found online at WorldsFairofMoney.com.

The Sovereign – Her Majesty The Queen’s 95th Birthday Celebration Set
The Queen, who officially reached the age of 95 on April 21, has had her birthday marked by The Royal Mint with an exciting range of commemorative coins, featuring two new designs, for the occasion. The £5 coin features a reverse design created by heraldic artist Timothy Noad. In his design, symbols of the UK nations are represented by a posy filled with thistles, daffodils, roses and shamrocks. The design that features on the reverse of the five-ounce and kilo editions was created by designer and sculptor Gary Breeze. His richly symbolic ‘flourish’ design represents The Queen’s nine decades with nine roses, while 54 leaves signify the countries of the Commonwealth.
In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable milestone, The Royal Mint has also gifted a celebratory coin to 95 individuals turning 95 year’s old this year.
Five different effigies of the Queen have been created by The Royal Mint documenting her reign, with her face featured on every British coin in circulation. The Royal Mint also marked the milestone birthday by projecting these effigies onto the Tower of London this week, the former home of The Royal Mint.

Jun 2, 2021 | Announcements, News, U.S. Mint
In a message released Friday, May 28, we made reference to a global shortage of silver. In more precise terms, the silver shortage being experienced by the United States Mint pertains only to the supply of silver blanks among suppliers to the U.S. Mint.
Please see the updated message below reflecting this clarification.
The United States Mint is committed to providing the best possible online experience to its customers. The Mint is being impacted by silver blank shortages among its suppliers. The demand for many of our bullion and numismatic products is at record heights and increasingly outpacing the supply of silver blanks available through our suppliers. This level of demand is felt most acutely by the Mint during the initial product release of numismatic items. Most recently in the pre-order window for 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars with Carson City privy mark (21XC) and New Orleans privy mark (21XD), the extraordinary volume of web traffic caused significant numbers of Mint customers to experience website anomalies that resulted in their inability to complete transactions.
In the interest of properly rectifying the situation, the Mint is postponing the pre-order windows for the remaining 2021 Morgan and Peace silver dollars that were originally scheduled for June 1 (Morgan Dollars struck at Denver (21XG) and San Francisco (21XF)) and June 7 (Morgan Dollar struck at Philadelphia (21XE) and the Peace Dollar (21XH)).
While inconvenient to many, this deliberate delay will give the Mint the time necessary to obtain web traffic management tools to enhance the user experience. As demand remains greater than supply, the reality is such that not everyone will be able to purchase a coin. However, we are confident that during the postponement, we will be able to greatly improve on our ability to deliver the utmost positive U.S. Mint experience that our customers deserve. We will announce revised pre-order launch dates as soon as possible.

The Royal Mint, the Original Maker of UK coins, has today launched a new range of collectable coins celebrating the iconic British band – The Who. To celebrate the launch of the coin, co-founder and lead singer of The Who, Roger Daltrey, visited The Royal Mint to strike one of the very first coins, giving the band’s seal of approval on the new coin and its design.
The Who collectable coin is the fourth in The Royal Mint’s ‘Music Legends’ series, and follows coins in honour of Queen, Elton John and David Bowie. The coin’s dynamic design includes some of the most iconic symbols from the band’s live and loud performances – including a union flag, Mod logo and speaker-smashing Rickenbacker guitar. Together, the symbols on the coin form a pinball table, a nod to the single Pinball Wizard and album Tommy, one of the band’s most famous creations. With the latest colour printing technology, elements of the coin have been digitally printed to showcase the vibrant red, white and blue of the band’s emblem.
Using the latest innovative technology and manufacturing techniques, a number of coins will feature a special ‘shockwave’ effect, radiating from the speaker – elevating the detail of the coin. Designers and craftspeople at the Mint have developed this effect in honour of The Who’s record-breaking loud concert – a record that was held for a decade.
Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “The Who are an iconic British band with an incredible musical legacy, so it felt right to honour them with an official UK coin. The Who coin is the latest in our show stopping Music Legends series, which celebrates legendary British artists through original new designs. It was a privilege to have Roger Daltrey visit the Mint to strike one of the first coins and meet the team of makers that have created this wonderful design. Our Music Legends series is engaging new generations of coin collectors, and we hope this design will become a cherished part of fan’s memorabilia.”
Roger Daltrey, Co-founder and Lead Singer of The Who said, “It’s an honour to have a coin produced to celebrate The Who’s musical legacy. The coin’s design captures the true essence of the band and what we represent. It was a fantastic moment being able to strike one of the very first pieces in the collection and see the range of technologies and processes involved in the making of the coin.”
Pete Townshend, Lead Guitarist of The Who said, “I am delighted that the band’s work is being recognised by this fantastic range of coins from The Royal Mint.”
The Who began with three schoolboys who all shared a love of music, from jazz and skiffle, to rock and rhythm & blues. The band was initially made up of John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and later joined by Keith Moon. With a musical legacy spanning more than 50 years, and an impressive record of a 100 million albums sold worldwide, over a billion global streams, members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame, the BRIT and GRAMMY Award winning, The Who, are considered by many today as ‘The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World’.
Brought together by The Royal Mint and Bravado, Universal Music Group’s leading merchandise and brand management company, The Who coin is available as limited-edition precious metal proof editions as well as a Brilliant Uncirculated edition. The Brilliant Uncirculated coin is also available in colour exclusive to The Royal Mint. View the full collection on The Royal Mint’s website www.royalmint.com/the-who.

First offering of these historic coins retrieved in 2014 from Atlantic Ocean site where fabled “Ship of Gold” sank in 1857
(Los Angeles, CA) May 19, 2021 – Two of the finest known, very rare 1855 and 1856 Australian sovereigns as well as an interesting mix of 74 other sunken treasure gold coins from Europe and South America that were also recovered from the fabled “Ship of Gold,” the S.S. Central America, will be offered in an auction by Goldberg Coins & Collectibles (www.GoldbergCoin.com). The auction will be conducted in Los Angeles and online, June 13-16, 2021.
“These 76 gold pieces were among 82 world gold coins retrieved during the 2014 recovery expedition to the Atlantic Ocean site where the legendary ship sank during a hurricane while sailing to New York City in 1857,” said Larry Goldberg, co-owner of the auction company. “This is the first time these recovered sunken treasure coins from Australia, Bolivia, Costa Rica, France, Great, Britain, Netherlands, Peru, and Spain have been offered.”
The Australian 1855 Sydney Mint gold Sovereign, Fr-9; KM-2, now graded PCGS MS-62+, was made during the first year of that mint’s operations. An 1856 Sydney Mint Sovereign, Fr-9; KM-2, now graded PCGS AU-58, also was incredibly recovered.
Recovered from the S.S. Central America, this first year of issue Australian 1855 Sydney Mint gold Sovereign (Fr-9; KM-2, PCGS MS-62+) will be offered at auction by Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, June 13-16, 2021.

“It is fascinating to think how these coins got to San Francisco where their journey to New York began. Were they carried by an Aussie miner seeking his fortune during the California Gold Rush or acquired as winnings in a gold camp poker game? Those two coins were onboard when the SS Central America went down 164 years ago,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group which consigned the 76 recovered world gold coins to the Goldberg auction.
Among the other especially notable world coins recovered in 2014 and in the auction are:
- Great Britain 1852 Queen Victoria Sovereign, S.3852D; Fr-387e; KM-736.1, PCGS MS-63+;
- Great Britain 1855 Queen Victoria Sovereign, S.3852D; Fr-387e; KM-736.1, PCGS MS-62;
- Costa Rica 1855 JB 1/2 Escudo, Fr-10; KM-97, PCGS MS-63;
- France 1855-A Napoleon III 20 Francs, Fr-573; KM-781.1, PCGS MS-61;
- Netherlands 1840 (Utrecht) King Willem I 10 Gulden, Fr-327; KM-56, PCGS MS=63+; and
- Spain King Ferdinand VII 1809 (Seville) Draped Bust 2 Escudos, Fr-304a; KM-456.1, PCGS AU-50, the oldest-dated gold piece recovered from the famous ship
Each of the PCGS-certified world coins is encapsulated in a specially-produced and labeled holder that contains a pinch of recovered S.S. Central America gold dust in a separate compartment. The insert labels include a statement of authenticity hand-signed by Bob Evans, the chief scientist on the 1988-1991 missions that first located and recovered portions of the fabulous treasure and assisted with the 2014 recovery. Evans wrote the introduction to the auction catalog’s section on these coins.

“The S.S. Central America treasure is a remarkable time capsule of economic practices in 1857, representing a specific, important moment in United States and world history: the outflow of wealth from Gold Rush California along the commercial artery that was the Panama Route… The treasure illustrates that world gold coins were an integral part of California and international trade during this exciting decade of burgeoning commerce in the 1850s,” explained Evans.
The S.S. Central America was a 280-foot long, three-masted side-wheel steamship carrying tons of California gold that had been shipped from San Francisco to Panama when she sank on September 12, 1857 hurricane during the final leg of a voyage from Aspinwall (now Colón), Panama to New York City. The tragedy took the lives of 420 of the ship’s 578 passengers and crew members, and the loss of the gold cargo was a major factor in the economically devastating financial panic of 1857 in the United States.
The treasure was recovered from the seafloor of the Atlantic, 7200 feet down about 150 miles off the North Carolina coast.

May 12, 2021 | Announcements, NLG
(May 12, 2021) — Ursula Kampmann, Ph.D. of Lörrach, Germany, founder of the German and English language MuenzenWoche (CoinsWeekly www.CoinsWeekly.com), Cosmos of Collectibles (https://cosmosofcollectibles.com, and Bookophile (https://bookophile.com), has joined the Board of Directors of the Numismatic Literary Guild (www.NLGonline.org).
Dr. Kampmann is the first overseas member of the organization’s board. She succeeds long-time NLG executive Donn Pearlman who stepped down after serving as a Board member a half dozen times since the 1980s and as 2017-2018 NLG Interim Executive Director.
Established in 1968, the Numismatic Literary Guild is a nonprofit organization open to all hobby writers and freelancers, editors, reporters, bloggers, and content producers for print, broadcast, and online media. It conducts an annual awards competition and the NLG newsletter is emerging into an educational resource for members.
The deadline for submitting this year’s entries to Awards Coordinator David W. Lange is June 5, 2021. Awards categories and rules can be found online at www.nlgonline.org/news/2021-numismatic-literary-guild-awards-competition
“It is a pleasure for me to be allowed to assist in rebuilding an association of all those promoting the joy of numismatics and history,” Dr. Kampmann stated after joining the NLG Board. “I am overjoyed to be chosen to represent Europe and its tradition of numismatic writing dating back more than half a millennium. I am looking forward to a fruitful exchange and hope our joint effort will make the world of numismatics grow a little bit closer together.”
“I am absolutely delighted that Ursula has joined the NLG Board and the core team of leaders who will transform the Numismatic Literary Guild into the respected organization in the U.S. and overseas that it was destined to become. We are fortunate to have her, her experiences and ideas as part of the NLG,” stated NLG Executive Director Charles Morgan, Editor of CoinWeek (www.CoinWeek.com).
Dr. Kampmann is the owner of Numismatischer Pressedienst (Numismatic Press Service), author of the best-selling German catalog of Roman coins and a former Editor-in-Chief of MünzenRevue.
She has an extensive background in European history as well as coins, including serving as Managing Director at Hess Divo AG in Zurich, Switzerland, and important roles at rare coin dealerships in Munich, Germany and Basel, Switzerland. She has curated many numismatic and bibliophile exhibitions in Germany and Switzerland.
Although her 1991 doctoral thesis was on the politics of imperial Pergamon reflected in the coinage issued in cooperation with other cities from Asia Minor, her scholarly focus is today on the history of coin collecting, the social aspects of coinage in the early 16th century as well as contemporary numismatics.
She is the recipient of many awards in Europe and the United States including 2002 Vreneli Award, 2012 Otto Paul Wenger Award, and the 2015 Burnett Anderson Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing jointly presented by the American Numismatic Association, the American Numismatic Society, and the NLG.
The other members of the NLG Board of Directors are Bob Fritsch, Michael Shutterly, Mel Wacks, and Doug Winter. Maurice Rosen serves as Treasurer.
