NGC Signs Exclusive Signature Label Deal with David J. Ryder

David RyderDavid J. Ryder, the only two-time director of the US Mint in more than a century, has agreed to exclusively hand sign certification labels for NGC. Named one of Coin World’s Most Influential People (1960-2020), Ryder brought many exciting modern coins to the marketplace as the 34th and 39th director, greatly enhancing the tradition of US numismatics with his leadership.

Ryder served as US Mint Director from 1992 to 1993 and again from 2018 to 2021. During his first term, Ryder was involved in several coin programs, including the issuance of silver dollars commemorating the 200th anniversary of when construction started on the White House. Surcharges from the sale of the coins went toward preserving the history of the emblematic American institution.

During his second term, Ryder was instrumental in the new designs for the iconic Silver and Gold Eagles, which coincided with the celebration of the coins’ 35th anniversary. He was also actively involved in implementing the 1921 Silver Dollar Anniversary Act, which authorized the mintage of 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars for their centennial anniversary.

“It has been a great honor to be involved with the development and debuts of so many important modern coins,” said Ryder. “I am proud that I now have the opportunity to collaborate with NGC to preserve and commemorate our country’s rich numismatic history.”

“NGC Signature Labels highlight esteemed individuals who have contributed to the advancement of numismatics,” said Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Senior Grading Finalizer. “We are thrilled that this remarkable group now includes David Ryder, who has helped chart a bold new course for US coinage.”

Opportunities to expand on collecting knowledge and abilities are available at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) convention, the ANA National Money Show and the Association’s highly-acclaimed Summer Seminar.

Copper, silver and gold specimens are covered with emphasis on About Circulated through Uncirculated examples. Instructors Steven Feltner and Bob Mellor will lead the course.

The immersive, two-day seminar is priced at $250 for ANA and FUN members and $350 for non-members.

Classical Numismatic Group Announced as Official Auction Partner for the 2022 National Money Show®

Ken Bressett Collection of Roman Coinage to be Auctioned

2022 National Money ShowThe American Numismatic Association (ANA) is pleased to announce that Classical Numismatic Group, LLC (CNG) will be conducting an Official ANA Auction at the National Money Show® (NationalMoneyShow.com) to be held at the iconic Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 10-12, 2022. CNG also has been selected to conduct an Official ANA Auction at the Phoenix National Money Show in 2023.

Established in 1975, CNG (cngcoins.com) is an international firm with offices in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and London, England with a focus on ancient, medieval and British numismatics, as well as U.S. coins.

The CNG auction will be online only, with lot viewing available at the show. (The date of the auction is yet to be determined.) The first part of the auction will be the sale of the Ken Bressett collection of Roman coinage. Bressett, the editor emeritus of A Guide Book of United States Coins (the official Red Book), was careful not to collect anything featured in the Red Book to avoid any conflict of interest, according to CNG Managing Director Mike Gasvoda. Bressett’s Roman coinage collection will comprise 300 to 350 lots.

“We are thrilled to be conducting an official ANA auction and hope that this is the first of many,” says Gasvoda. “As an ANA member for more than 40 years, it gives me great pleasure to be a part of furthering the mission of the Association.”

To consign items with CNG for the National Money Show auction, collectors can contact Gasvoda at mike@cngcoins.com.

The 2022 National Money Show offers collectors access to hundreds of dealers offering extensive numismatic inventory at all price levels, exhibits of rare and historical treasures, and educational programming for both beginning and seasoned hobbyists. The show is hosted by the nonprofit, Colorado Springs-based American Numismatic Association, which is dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its array of educational and outreach programs.

The Royal Mint commemorates the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on a new coin

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has today unveiled a new UK coin celebrating the life and legacy of
Mahatma Gandhi – one of the world’s most influential leaders

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has today unveiled a new £5 coin celebrating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi – one of the world’s most influential leaders.

It is the first time that Gandhi has been commemorated on an official UK coin, designed and made by The Royal Mint. Struck in the 75th year of India’s Independence, the coin features an image of a lotus, India’s national flower, and one of Gandhi’s most famous quotes – ‘My life is my message’.

Born in Porbandar, India, in 1869, Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence. His followers called him ‘Mahatma’, which means ‘great soul’, and he is still widely remembered by that name.

The new coin, designed by Heena Glover, is available in a range of finishes including a gold one ounce, silver one ounce and a £5 ‘brilliant uncirculated’. It is part of a wider Diwali collection offered by The Royal Mint, which includes 1g and 5g gold bars in henna packaging, and the UK’s first gold bar depicting Lakshmi – the Hindu goddess of wealth.

The 20g gold Lakshmi bar was designed in partnership with the Hindu community in South Wales, and on Diwali The Royal Mint will join celebrations at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Cardiff as worshippers offer prayers to Lakshmi and Ganesha for the coming year.

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Master of the Mint, said: “This coin is a fitting tribute to an influential leader who inspired millions of people around the world for his social activism. As a practicing Hindu, I am proud to unveil this coin during Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence and it is fantastic to have a UK coin commemorating his remarkable life for the first time.

Nicola Howell, Chief Customer Officer for The Royal Mint, said: “We are delighted to unveil the first official UK coin commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The beautiful design has been struck in the 75th year of India’s Independence, and builds on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India.

Working with the Hindu community in our heartland of South Wales, we have also created a beautiful 20g gold bar depicting Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. We hope it will be a treasured addition for Diwali.

The Royal Mint releases official Tigger 50p in collection inspired by Disney’s Winnie the Pooh

The Royal Mint has released the next coin in the collectable series, inspired by Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, featuring the loveable character Tigger on an official UK 50p.

The sixth coin in a nine-coin collection, the commemorative 50p featuring Tigger follows the release of Owl, and Winnie the Pooh and his friends, respectively, on a 50p piece in 2021.

The collection began in 2020 with Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin and Piglet, and the final three coins are set to be unveiled next year, at The Royal Mint.

The Royal Mint’s designer Daniel Thorne remastered Tigger for a 50p piece, based on the original watercolour decorations of E.H. Shepard, first published in the A.A. Milne’s classic tales 95 years ago.

As with each coin in the collection, the design depicts the iconic E.H. Shepard characters and Daniel Thorne’s signature bee motif, adding a special feature for collectors across the nine-coin range.

Available in gold, silver and brilliant uncirculated, and special-colour edition, the range combines The Royal Mint’s 1,100-year-old minting traditions with innovative colour printing technology.

Clare Maclennan, The Royal Mint’s Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin, said: “Winnie the Pooh is a family favourite which, just like the joy of coin collecting, unites generations. With so many loveable characters in the range, combined with the craftsmanship and innovation at The Royal Mint, the collection inspired by Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, is an excellent choice for coin collectors and Pooh fans, and a fitting tribute to the loveable bear and friends on the 95th Anniversary of the adventures in Hundred Acre Wood.”

The Tigger 2021 UK 50p is available to purchase as an individual piece or as part of a collection at The Royal Mint.

Professional Coin Grading Service is now the Official Grading Service for the Central States Numismatic Society

Larry Shepherd and Stephanie Sabin

CSNS Convention Manager Larry Shepherd and PCGS President Stephanie Sabin

October 25, 2021 — Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com), the leader in third-party authentication and grading services for high-value collectibles including rare coins, banknotes, trading cards, tickets, autographs, and memorabilia, has entered into an important partnership agreement with the Central States Numismatic Society (www.CentralStatesNumismaticSociety.org) and the CSNS annual convention.

Underscoring the importance of the partnership, it is the first time PCGS has entered into this kind of agreement with any coin show not affiliated with its parent company, Collectors Universe, Inc. Central States officials are planning to expand their convention starting with the 2022 show.

“What especially excites me about this new relationship with PCGS is that we’ll be working together to find new and better ways to serve the numismatic community,” CSNS Convention Manager Larry Shepherd.

PCGS is now the Official Grading Service for the Central States Numismatic Society. This will involve all categories of numismatic coins and paper money, including U.S. and world coins, ancients, and U.S. and world banknotes,” according to Shepherd.

“PCGS and Collectors Universe will also be the Official Supplier of Grading and Authentication for sports-related items as well as numismatic items for the CSNS convention,” he added.

“PCGS has been a long-time supporter of the Central States Numismatic Society and we are excited to legitimize our relationship through a formal partnership,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “We are committed to bringing leading authentication and grading services to the bourse floor in addition to exciting and engaging displays. This partnership is the perfect example of two powerful entities within our hobby combining forces to drive education and provide the best services possible to collectors of all experience levels.”

The next CSNS convention will be conducted April 26-30, 2022 at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, 1551 Thoreau Dr., in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois. That is the site of previous CSNS conventions in recent years.

There will be a 2022 PNG Day for the Professional Numismatists Guild and its invited guests. Additional information about that event will be announced in the coming weeks.

“After the disappointing cancellations of our conventions the past two years because of the pandemic, we now are eagerly preparing for a major ‘welcome back’ event in 2022,” stated Shepherd.

“We will be enlarging the show with a bigger bourse floor area to conveniently accommodate more dealers and visitors. Official auctions will be conducted by both Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) and Legend Rare Coin Auctions (www.LegendAuctions.com) in conjunction with the 2022 CSNS convention. Positive Protection, Inc. will be providing security,” he explained.

Applications for dealer tables and for entering exhibits as well as hotel reservation information and the schedule of events will soon be posted on the CSNS website at www.CentralStatesNumismaticSociety.org/convention.
