In-Person Seminars Return to FUN, National Money Show® & Summer Seminar

After offering numismatic learning programs exclusively online for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) is once again offering in-person seminars. Opportunities to expand on collecting knowledge and abilities are available at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) convention, the ANA National Money Show and the Association’s highly-acclaimed Summer Seminar.

FUN Convention Seminar

In conjunction with the FUN Convention, Jan. 6-9, 2022, the ANA is offering the seminar “Intermediate Grading of U.S. Coins,” which teaches skills that are critical for any dedicated numismatist. The course will take place Jan. 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fl.

The mid-level course is intended to sharpen grading skills through hands-on group and individual exercises with instructor feedback on each coin. Students will gain a better understanding of current grading-service philosophies and how they evolved in the marketplace. Copper, silver and gold specimens are covered with emphasis on About Circulated through Uncirculated examples. Instructors Steven Feltner and Bob Mellor will lead the course.

The immersive, two-day seminar is priced at $250 for ANA and FUN members and $350 for non-members.

Hundreds of never before seen, recently made examples will be available to examine along with the ANA’s Counterfeit Detection set of older and highly deceptive fakes.

This seminar will teach counterfeit detection of key date and mintmarked coins, U.S. gold coins, and the latest wave of deceptive Chinese-made counterfeits. Both digital presentation and extensive hands-on coin examination will be covered.

Instructor Brian Silliman is leading this course, March 8-9, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Broadmoor, 1 Lake Ave., in Colorado Springs. The cost is $250 for ANA members and $350 for non-members.

The two-day course “Fundamentals of Grading,” will explore the history and philosophy of grading, and teach how to grade copper, nickel, silver and gold U.S. coins according to the latest ANA and market standards. Instruction will consist of a slide presentation and plenty of hands-on opportunities to view and grade the ANA Grading Set in individual and group settings.

ANA Education Director Rod Gillis is instructing this course with special guest Ken Bressett, March 11-12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Broadmoor, 1 Lake Ave., in Colorado Springs. The cost is $250 for ANA members and $350 for non-members.

Classical Numismatic Group Announced as Official Auction Partner for the 2022 National Money Show®

Ken Bressett Collection of Roman Coinage to be Auctioned

2022 National Money ShowThe American Numismatic Association (ANA) is pleased to announce that Classical Numismatic Group, LLC (CNG) will be conducting an Official ANA Auction at the National Money Show® (NationalMoneyShow.com) to be held at the iconic Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 10-12, 2022. CNG also has been selected to conduct an Official ANA Auction at the Phoenix National Money Show in 2023.

Established in 1975, CNG (cngcoins.com) is an international firm with offices in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and London, England with a focus on ancient, medieval and British numismatics, as well as U.S. coins.

The CNG auction will be online only, with lot viewing available at the show. (The date of the auction is yet to be determined.) The first part of the auction will be the sale of the Ken Bressett collection of Roman coinage. Bressett, the editor emeritus of A Guide Book of United States Coins (the official Red Book), was careful not to collect anything featured in the Red Book to avoid any conflict of interest, according to CNG Managing Director Mike Gasvoda. Bressett’s Roman coinage collection will comprise 300 to 350 lots.

“We are thrilled to be conducting an official ANA auction and hope that this is the first of many,” says Gasvoda. “As an ANA member for more than 40 years, it gives me great pleasure to be a part of furthering the mission of the Association.”

To consign items with CNG for the National Money Show auction, collectors can contact Gasvoda at mike@cngcoins.com.

The 2022 National Money Show offers collectors access to hundreds of dealers offering extensive numismatic inventory at all price levels, exhibits of rare and historical treasures, and educational programming for both beginning and seasoned hobbyists. The show is hosted by the nonprofit, Colorado Springs-based American Numismatic Association, which is dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its array of educational and outreach programs.

Larry Shepherd and Stephanie Sabin

CSNS Convention Manager Larry Shepherd and PCGS President Stephanie Sabin

October 25, 2021 — Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com), the leader in third-party authentication and grading services for high-value collectibles including rare coins, banknotes, trading cards, tickets, autographs, and memorabilia, has entered into an important partnership agreement with the Central States Numismatic Society (www.CentralStatesNumismaticSociety.org) and the CSNS annual convention.

Underscoring the importance of the partnership, it is the first time PCGS has entered into this kind of agreement with any coin show not affiliated with its parent company, Collectors Universe, Inc. Central States officials are planning to expand their convention starting with the 2022 show.

“What especially excites me about this new relationship with PCGS is that we’ll be working together to find new and better ways to serve the numismatic community,” CSNS Convention Manager Larry Shepherd.

PCGS is now the Official Grading Service for the Central States Numismatic Society. This will involve all categories of numismatic coins and paper money, including U.S. and world coins, ancients, and U.S. and world banknotes,” according to Shepherd.

“PCGS and Collectors Universe will also be the Official Supplier of Grading and Authentication for sports-related items as well as numismatic items for the CSNS convention,” he added.

“PCGS has been a long-time supporter of the Central States Numismatic Society and we are excited to legitimize our relationship through a formal partnership,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “We are committed to bringing leading authentication and grading services to the bourse floor in addition to exciting and engaging displays. This partnership is the perfect example of two powerful entities within our hobby combining forces to drive education and provide the best services possible to collectors of all experience levels.”

The next CSNS convention will be conducted April 26-30, 2022 at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, 1551 Thoreau Dr., in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois. That is the site of previous CSNS conventions in recent years.

There will be a 2022 PNG Day for the Professional Numismatists Guild and its invited guests. Additional information about that event will be announced in the coming weeks.

“After the disappointing cancellations of our conventions the past two years because of the pandemic, we now are eagerly preparing for a major ‘welcome back’ event in 2022,” stated Shepherd.

“We will be enlarging the show with a bigger bourse floor area to conveniently accommodate more dealers and visitors. Official auctions will be conducted by both Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) and Legend Rare Coin Auctions (www.LegendAuctions.com) in conjunction with the 2022 CSNS convention. Positive Protection, Inc. will be providing security,” he explained.

Applications for dealer tables and for entering exhibits as well as hotel reservation information and the schedule of events will soon be posted on the CSNS website at www.CentralStatesNumismaticSociety.org/convention.

World’s Most Valuable and Famous Rare Coin, 1933 Double Eagle, at Chicago World’s Fair of Money®

First public display of this historic coin since its $18.9 million record-shattering auction, courtesy of its anonymous new owner and GreatCollections

The world’s most valuable and famous rare coin, the 1933 Double Eagle previously owned by King Farouk of Egypt and shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, will be publicly exhibited for four days at the American Numismatic Association’s Chicago World’s Fair of Money (www.WorldsFairOfMoney.com), Tuesday through Friday, August 10-13. This will be the historic gold coin’s first public display anywhere since it was sold at auction in early June for a record-breaking $18,872,250.

The new owner told me that when this coin was first sold at auction in 2002 for a then-record-breaking $7.5 million, he was determined to one day own it. Nineteen years later, he fulfilled his dream. Now, after weeks of confidential meticulous planning and security arrangements, he graciously will be sharing it for the public to see in person at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money,” said Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections Coin Auction (www.GreatCollections.com) and exclusive consultant to the coin’s owner.

“We were absolutely surprised and ecstatic to be able to include this coin as a featured attraction at the upcoming Chicago World’s Fair of Money. This is a legendary coin, and we are honored that its new owner and GreatCollections are exhibiting it first at the ANA convention,” said Kim Kiick, ANA executive director.

The Chicago World’s Fair of Money will be open to the public in Hall A of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois, August 10-14. The acclaimed 1933 Double Eagle will be displayed at the GreatCollections booth, #400, for the first four days of the five-day show.

United States $20 denomination gold coins (Double Eagles), specially designed by acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, were struck from 1907 to 1933. Collectors often refer to them as “Saints” in recognition of their designer.

Although United States Mint records indicate 445,500 Double Eagles were struck in 1933, only one with that date is lawfully permitted for private ownership.

In April 1933, during the Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order “forbidding the hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates within the continental United States” with limited exceptions. A State Department export license was granted in 1944 for one 1933-dated Double Eagle so it could be owned by King Farouk of Egypt. This is the same coin that will be displayed. Two other 1933 Double Eagles are in the National Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian Institution.

Public hours for the Chicago World’s Fair of Money are Tuesday, August 10, from 1 to 5:30 pm; Wednesday through Friday, August 11 to 13, from 10 am to 5:30 pm; and Saturday, August 14, from 10 am to 3:30 pm.

Public admission Tuesday through Friday is $10 daily or $25 for a three-day pass. Children 12 and under are admitted free daily and admission is free for everyone on Saturday.
