855 Lots to be presented in first ever two-day event, including a special “Silver Dollar Day” auction
(April 20, 2018—Lincroft, NJ)—Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ 26th Regency Auction will be the firm’s largest and most impressive auction yet. The official auction for the May 2018 PCGS Member’s Show at Harrah’s in New Orleans, will take place on Wednesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 17, 2018. It will feature coins from very important collections showcasing some of the finest coins that the rare coin market has to offer; there is something for everyone.
The Wednesday, May 16th auction session has been billed as “Silver Dollar Day,” and is anchored by the P.F.M. Collection of Morgan Dollars and the Crow River Peace Dollar Collection. Selections from the Aurora Borealis Collection serves as the backbone to the event’s toned dollar section.
“The P.F.M. Collection is the current #6 set on the PCGS Registry, and features many exceptional gem quality coins,” explains Julie Abrams, the firm’s president. “and some are pedigreed to the great Morgan dollar collections like Jack Lee and Coronet. The Crow River Collection was assembled by the same collector who put together the record shattering set of $10 Indians that Legend Auctions sold last October.”

Day Two offers a wide selection of very high-end coins from early copper to gold and patterns. The session begins with The Premier Barber Collection (Proof Dimes and Mint State Quarters), which are duplicates from a world class collection assembled by a very picky collector client of Legend Numismatics. Every coin ranks towards the top of the population report and the vast majority are PCGS/CAC, including a 1900-O PCGS MS67+ GOLD CAC. From there, the auction session continues with exceptional toned Proof Indian Head Cents from the Aurora Borealis Collection. The David Poole Collection of Proof Three Cent Nickels features many of the finest examples of this obsolete series, and is a study in Cameo and Deep Cameo coins. A wide range of half dollars from Bust, Seated, and Walking Liberty (including Dale Larsen’s Collection of Toned Late Date Walkers) will delight any collector.
Gold coins make up a great portion of the sale. A complete set of Classic Head quarter eagles, the Oak Crest Collection of Carson City Half Eagles, and individual high grade and rare date gold coins broaden the depth of the offering, including a decent selection of early half eagles. A newly graded 1861-O $20 in PCGS AU53 CAC and a GEM 1907 High Relief in PCGS MS66 are additional single coin highlights. Rounding out the sale is the Steven Cook Collection of Patterns, Part 1—a collection of 150+ patterns being sold in two parts, the first 77 in the May 2018 Regency Auction.
“The diverse nature of Thursday evening’s Regency Auction session has elicited a strong collector response,” said Greg Cohen, Senior Numismatist of Legend Auctions. “Whether you collect early type coins, 19th century proofs, rare date gold, or neat pattern coins, there is a wide range of coins at all price points. Collectors will have, in some cases, once in a decade (or more) opportunities to acquire great coins for their cabinets.”

P.F.M. Morgan Dollar and Crow River Peace Dollar Collections Will Anchor Special “Dollar Day” as part of Legend’s Regency Auction 26 in New Orleans
(2/14/18 Lincroft NJ)-Today Legend Rare Coin Auctions proudly announces the consignment of the P.F.M. Collection of Morgan Dollars, the current #6 PCGS Registry Set in the Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921) to Regency Auction 26, the official auction for the PCGS Members Only Show in New Orleans. Not only is it complete by date and mintmark, but the collector also included major varieties that are popularly collected with the regular issues and are there to augment the depth of the collection. For good measure, the collector also made sure to have a fair number of PL and DMPL designated coins to add to the visual allure.
“This is a very impressive set,” declared Laura Sperber, founder of Legend Rare Coin Auctions upon the collection’s arrival in the LRCA offices. “The collector has been carefully assembling the set since 2001, and once you see the coins in hand, you know this was a real labor of love for him. The list of highlights is really impressive-a GEM MS65 1892-S, the Coronet Collection 1904-S in PCGS MS67, just wait until you see the whole thing, there really are many AMAZING coins!”
“After our record shattering sales of the Sunnywood/Simpson and Coronet Collections, the owner of the P.F.M. Collection knew that there was only one auction firm that could produce a catalog that would show, in print, the love he had for the coins, and present them in that light to today’s collectors,” said Julie Abrams, President of Legend Auctions, who worked directly with the collector. “Some of the coins are tied for finest, or second finest graded, the 1889-O in PCGS MS66+ is the sole finest for the date, and there are many dates where only a handful are graded finer.”
“Each coin is well matched for eye appeal,” noted Senior Numismatist, Greg Cohen, “and there are many familiar pedigrees seen, including Jack Lee, Coronet, PCGS Tour, Cajun, and Shrike.”

David Lawrence Rare Coins of Virginia Beach has purchased one of the most impressive sets of U.S. coins that has ever been assembled. The collection, pieced together by mega-collector Bruce Morelan via Legend Numismatics, was set to be auctioned through Legend Auctions in May. However, in advance of the auction announcement, the set was acquired intact by David Lawrence Rare Coins on behalf of DLRC’s partner, Dell Loy Hansen.
For Bruce, the thrill of the hunt had ended since there were no better coins to include. He had enjoyed the set for many years, even selling it intact to a coin investment fund in 2008. He was later able to purchase it once again before improving it with several additional spectacular specimens. In the end, Morelan felt it was time to pass the coins on for other collectors to enjoy. However, when rumor suggested that a “world class” collection was to be auctioned, John Brush reached out to Legend to inquire about the coins. When they found out that the legendary set was being offered, DLRC and Dell Loy Hansen jumped on the opportunity and the negotiations with Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics took only a few hours.
“This is simply a group of coins that should not exist. The quality of each of the Seated Dollars is absolutely impeccable, and every single coin was hand-picked for not only condition, but ultimate quality,” says John Brush, President of David Lawrence. “When we found out that the set was going to become available, we acted quickly as we view this as one of the few collections that simply should not be broken apart if at all possible. The sum of all its pieces are so much greater than the individuals, and we wanted to do our part to try to keep it intact. When I notified Mr. Hansen about it, he thought that it was an excellent opportunity and one that we should pursue immediately.”
“If a collector was to own only this set, he or she would own by far one of the greatest collections ever assembled,” remarked Laura Sperber. “There is not a single coin that is anything less than the absolute best in quality and eye appeal by at least a full grade or more, in many cases. With what Dell Loy is trying to accomplish, this monster Hall of Fame set is a perfect fit for his collection. I am thrilled to see it placed with him instead of being broken up. I know he cherishes it and will allow it to be displayed to treat the current and future collecting public. I am sad to see the set go as I have enjoyed exclusively building it for fifteen years. It was certainly a highlight of my career.”
The collection not only houses the finest known pieces of many of the individual dates, but each piece is CAC-certified for quality as well. Of particular interest are the 1851 and 1852 Seated Dollars. The 1851 is graded by PCGS as MS65 and was once part of the legendary Norweb Collection. The 1852 is similarly graded by PCGS and is simply an amazing example of this key date. With coins from the legendary Garrett, Share, Childs, Fairfield, Stack, Hayes, Amon Carter, and Knoxville Collections, this set was put together over many years by some of the most discerning eyes in the coin industry. In fact, many acquisitions were made as part of larger collections to add a single coin to the set. A group that can never be duplicated, this is truly one of the Hall of Fame collections.
DLRC and Dell Loy Hansen are looking forward to exhibiting the collection in the near future, but for now it is available for viewing as a PCGS Registry Set at D.L. Hansen Liberty Seated Dollar Set.

Two important collections will anchor the May 2018 New Orleans Regency Auction
(Lincroft, NJ)-Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to have been selected to sell two outstanding collections in the firm’s 26th Regency Auction, the official auction of the PCGS May 2018 Members Only Show in New Orleans: The Oak Creek Collection of Carson City Half Eagles and the Crow River Collection of Peace Dollars.
The Oak Creek Collection of Carson City Half Eagles was carefully assembled over the last two decades by a dedicated collector, whose eye for quality was exceptional. The collector sourced his coins from several of the biggest dealers and auction houses. The set is complete, save for an example of the 1870-CC, which he never found an example that suited his tastes; rather than include an inferior coin in his set, he left that hole open. The coins are impressive on their own, but when viewed together, and seeing how they all match, not just in grades, but in terms of eye appeal, you clearly can tell assembling the set was a labor of love for the Oak Crest collector. This is a very important opportunity for the collector of Carson City gold coins, or Liberty half eagles in general to be able to add these important rarities to their cabinets.
The Crow River Collection. On the heels of the record breaking sale of his collection of Indian Head Eagles in their October 2017 Regency Auction, the Crow River collector has decided to auction his set of Peace dollars. This carefully assembled includes coins pedigreed back to Jack Lee and Bob Simpson. The offering of the Crow River Peace dollars presents a great opportunity for any advanced collector to upgrade their sets with these beautiful, high end examples. It should be noted that the vast majority of this set is white, and most coins are CAC-approved.
“We are honored to have been selected to present these two wonderful collections in our 26th Regency Auction,” declared Legend Auctions’ president, Julie Abrams. “With nearly two months before the consignment deadline, we know that an incredible selection of rare coins will be in the offing. These two collections will serve as the anchor to the sale, and the ground work has been laid for an amazing auction.”
“There is an almost mythological aura surrounding coins from the Carson City mint,” explains Senior Numismatist, Greg Cohen. “Any specialized offering, especially of the gold coins, creates a stir in the collecting community. While the eagles and double eagles are more commonly offered, the half eagles are a very challenging series to collect, but unlike the other two series, none are cost prohibitive. The Oak Crest Collection will be remembered for years for its quality and eye appeal.”
“The Crow River Peace dollars were a fun side project for the collector,” explains LRCA Founder, Laura Sperber. “The collector grew impatient waiting for the coins needed to complete his collection of Indian Head eagles, so he put this set together in the meantime. Over the two sales since his eagles sold, Peace dollars in LRCA auctions have done very well, realizing in some cases, ‘moon money’ and beyond! He made the decision that now would be a great time to pass these beautiful GEMS to new homes.”
Legend Rare Coin Auctions is still accepting consignments for this important auction through March 23. Anyone interested in consigning should contact Legend’s President, Julie Abrams or Senior Numismatist, Greg Cohen to discuss their holdings. The office can be reached at 732-935-1168, or email Julie (julie@legendauctions.com) or Greg (greg@legendauctions.com). LRCA will be set up and accepting consignments at the Long Beach Expo, February 21-24; at the Mid-Winter ANA, March 7-9; and at the Baltimore Convention, March 22-24. (Lincroft, NJ-January 26, 2018)-Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ latest Regency Auction, the 25th sale held as official auctioneer for the PCGS Members Only Shows, took place on the evening of January 25, at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. As per their standards, the firm offered a selection of hand selected, high quality rare coins in the boutique style that is their trademark, and the results were beyond expectations. The 329 lots offered were anchored by the Ipswich Collection of Three Cent Silver pieces, as well as the properties of various consignors, including the Edmund Family Trust. The quality of the offering resulted in a large number of bidders, including our largest number of overseas bidders-collectors in Asia and Australia bid, and won more coins in this sale, than in previous sales, proving yet again that the market for high end U.S. coins is truly global, and Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ clientele is truly worldwide.
The sale began with the Ipswich Collection of Three Cent Silvers, a nearly complete set of the popular “fish scales” series. Every lot was exceptionally high end for the assigned grade, all graded by PCGS and approved by CAC. Put together over the years by a dedicated collector with a sharp eye, the offering brought out many serious collectors of the series, with bidding wars fought out on many lots. This action continued when the three cent silvers from other consignors were offered later on in the evening. Other areas of strong bidding included better and rare date gold, with the top lot in the sale being the GEM 1920 double eagle, one of only two coins graded MS65 at PCGS, as finest known. With an estimate of $100,000+, there were three active bidders at $120,000 and two very serious collector bidders took it to the final price of $188,000 inclusive of the 17.5% buyers premium. The second highest price realized was for lot 209, the finest known Original Proof 1852 dollar, one of perhaps three examples extant, realizing $129,250.
Having become “the auction house” for great toned Morgan and Peace dollars, serious collectors know that LRCA is the place to go to get the Monsters. In Regency Auction 26, two coins brought particularly exemplary prices after collectors fiercely battled out to the end. The first was lot 220, a PCGS MS66 CAC 1881-S dollar that realized $21,150, on a $9,500 presale estimate. The second, lot 236, a dramatically toned 1922 Peace dollar in PCGS MS66 that saw a total of 50 bids from 11 different bidders, before the gavel finally fell at $8,812.50 on a $750 presale estimate!
“We were very pleased with how this sale came together, from beginning to end,” Julie Abrams, Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ president said. “Clearly the market is starved for great coins. There was strong bidding activity from the moment the sale was posted online for bidding, and it continued through the live bidding. A large number of presale bidders and bidders participating on the floor and on the internet and phone during the session, resulting in strong prices across the board, in many cases stronger than we had anticipated. Again, bidders from all over the world were logged into bid during the sale, and the 1920 Double Eagle is now going to an amazing collection of U.S. gold coins overseas.”
“From what we have seen over the last several months, there is a serious drought for great coins in the large auctions and out there on the bourse floor,” Laura Sperber, founder of LRCA noted. “Our model of hand selecting high quality coins for inclusion in our boutique sales ensure that every buyer will be delighted with the coins purchased in our sales. Because there are so few coins out there, the high-end coins are bringing strong prices-we definitely see the coin market in a stronger position than it was at this time last year. With the record stock market, we think more money, from serious buyers looking at undervalued areas, will mean higher prices as we continue over the course of the next year or so.”

(Lincroft, NJ)—Legend Rare Coin Auctions will be conducting its 25th Regency Auction on January 25, 2018 in conjunction with the PCGS Members’ Only Show at the Luxor in Las Vegas. The 349 lot auction begins with the Ipswich Collection of three cent silvers. From there, the firm presents high grade and high end quality issues from the early days of the first U.S. mint in Philadelphia to rare key date issues of popular 20th century series.
“There really is virtually something for everyone in this sale,” said Julie Abrams, president of Legend Auctions, “From early type to better date gold, to classic Commems and patterns, you will certainly find something to add to your collection.”
“We are very pleased with how this auction came together,” said LRCA founder, Laura Sperber. “As the dealer that built the top two collections of Mint State and Proof three cent silvers, I can tell you that the Ipswich collector put together a great, nearly complete set, he would not put a low quality piece just to fill a hole. We are very impressed by the quality for sure. Other areas that are strong in this sale are copper, silver, and gold type coins from the first Philadelphia mint, with some great high end early copper and Capped Bust halves. David Lawrence Rare Coins has come together with one of the most prominent rare coin collectors of our time, Dell Loy Hansen, to launch him into the business. After offering his personal services as an advisor to Mr. Hansen, president and owner of DLRC John Brush witnessed first-hand Mr. Hansen’s passion for coins. This exciting collaboration led to the company enthusiastically welcoming Dell Loy Hansen as a permanent fixture and partner at David Lawrence Rare Coins.
Mr. Hansen, or Dell Loy as he is better known by his friends, is widely recognized as the owner of several very successful businesses, including the Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team. Dell Loy began his numismatic journey into collecting as a young man. However, as his businesses thrived, he took a hiatus from the hobby he had grown to love. About 18 months ago, his interest in the hobby was piqued anew as he began to work on his collection again. In that brief period of time, Mr. Hansen has acquired an impressive number of coins and several complete collections, with a focus on the PCGS Registry Sets. His ultimate goal has developed into forming a collection that would rival the king of collectors, Louis Eliasberg. During this time of acquisition, he and Mr. Brush formed a friendship and partnership working together to add several major pieces to his collection. After numerous dealings, Mr. Hansen sought Brush’s help in curating his collection as well. As a result, the two have collaborated for several months and realized the immense potential in working together professionally, and with the Dell Loy Hansen Collection.
Brush said, “It’s been an honor to work with Mr. Hansen and his coin collection. The roots of DLRC began with David Lawrence Feigenbaum, a collector who started the company in 1979 and grew it with the collector in mind. From humble beginnings, the company has always strived to help collectors build and sell their collections. In the end, it only made sense that we form an official relationship that allows us to work together with one of the most prominent collectors in the country.” Brush continued, “We look forward to helping Mr. Hansen grow and improve his collection and make it one of the most complete collections of U.S. coins ever assembled. In addition to his access to huge capital for future deals, Dell Loy also brings many years of experience in mentoring young business leaders like myself and partnering with a variety of businesses to help them achieve growth and scale that might not be possible otherwise. Myself and the excellent long-time staff at DLRC look forward to utilizing his skills into further growth at David Lawrence.”
David Lawrence Rare Coins, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers weekly internet auctions every Sunday night, with a focus on PCGS, NGC, and CAC certified coins and currency. As one of the leading rare coin dealers in the United States, David Lawrence Rare Coins continues to grow, and the addition of Mr. Hansen to David Lawrence strengthens the bond with collectors as “Your Partners in Numismatics”.
ABOUT DAVID LAWRENCE RARE COINS
David Lawrence Rare Coins was founded in 1979 by David Lawrence Feigenbaum, in a spare bedroom. A passionate collector his entire life, he made the jump to dealing when his collecting desires surpassed his limited professor’s budget. Dave passed away after a long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and Dave’s son, John Feigenbaum took the reins and oversaw the company’s growth until 2015. In August of 2015, John became the Publisher of the CDN Publishing and passed operations to John Brush.
Mr. Brush directs the company with the help of an extremely dedicated staff of 17 employees. The management team has a cumulative total of over 80 years with the company and the team of numismatists offer over 125 years of experience. They are deeply passionate about all aspects of coin collecting, and whether the coin is $5, $50 or $5 million, they are here to serve the collector with the best quality, service, and price possible. Brush and the DLRC staff are also equally focused on bringing the latest technology advances to the hobby.
The company has handled legendary rarities of United States numismatics including two examples of the 1894-S Barber dime, a gem 1876-CC twenty cent piece, the finest known 1901-S Barber quarter, two of the 12 known 1870-S Seated dollars, one of the two known 1825/4 $5, and the finest certified 1796 No Pole Liberty Cap half cent. They also helped to assemble and then sell the $25 million Richmond Collection at three public auctions hosted in New York City and Baltimore, Maryland.
David Lawrence Rare Coins is an industry leader in the trading and auctioning of U.S. rare coins certified by PCGS, NGC, and CAC. (Lincroft, NJ—December 15, 2017) The final Regency Auction of 2017, the 24th held in conjunction with the December PCGS Members Only Show saw exceptionally strong results in many areas. The top lot was a Condition Census 1795 half dollar from the Col. Green and Eric Newman Collections, graded PCGS MS62. When bidding ended, it took $141,000 for the new owner to add it to his collection (this and all prices reported are inclusive of the 17.5% buyers premium).
“The Regency Auction on Thursday evening,” stated Legend President, Julie Abrams, “featured several great collections, including the current #2 PCGS Basic Design Type set—the Bubbabells Collection; a very cool offering of key gold and silver issues from the York Collection, and a Registry Set of Carson City Morgan dollars. From the time the sale was posted online, we knew there was a lot of serious interest in this sale, as a record number of people viewed our online catalog. On December 6, we had a special lot viewing session in New York City for our east coast customers, and with that and the viewers in Las Vegas, it was evident the auction would do very well.”
“One area of particular strength seen throughout the evening was 20th century coins that were at or close to the apex of the grading scale for their respective issues,” explains Greg Cohen, Senior Numismatist for the auction house. “From the outset with the Bubbabells type set, these issues brought strong prices, just take a look at this partial list of highlights:”
- Lot 4 1C 1908 PCGS PR67 RD. Realized $17,037.50
- Lot 34 50C 1939 PCGS MS68+ CAC. Realized $17,625
- Lot 42 $1 1921 Peace. PCGS MS66 CAC. Realized $12,337.50
- Lot 43 $1 1923 PCGS MS67 CAC. Realized $11,162.50
- Lot 368 $20 1914-D PCGS MS66+ CAC. Realized $45,825
- Lot 369 $20 $1914-S PCGS MS66+ CAC. Realized $30,550
“Overall, we are very pleased with the results of the auction and we are seeing that the market may well be strengthening coming into 2018” noted Laura Sperber, founder and partner in Legend Auctions. “We did see very fierce bidding from many different participants. With the stock market at all time highs, the economy doing nicely, wages going up according to government reports, we are seeing lots of new names coming in and placing strong bids. If this trend holds, we think 2018 will be really good for the coin market.”
Additional highlights include:
- Lot 50 $5 1897-S PCGS MS67+ CAC. Realized $41,125
- Lot 72 25C 1873-CC Arrows. PCGS AU55. Realized $79,312.50
- Lot 118 1C 1864 L on Ribbon. PCGS MS66 RB CAC. Realized $7,637.50
- Lot 188 10C 1814 STATES OF. PCGS AU58. Realized $17,037.50
- Lot 281 $1 1889-CC PCGS MS63. Realized $49,937,50
- Lot 358 $20 1893-S PCGS MS64 CAC. Realized $17,037.50
“The boutique style that our consignors’ coins are presented in lead directly to stronger prices,” Julie Abrams continued. “By limiting our sales to around 500 lots of hand selected coins, vetted for quality and value by our team of experts, our bidders do not have to search through thousands of subpar coins, they know in a Legend Auctions, we have already vetted the coins for them. They know they will be happy with their purchase, and can feel comfortable ‘stretching’ to add that special coin to their collections.”
Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ 2018 auction schedule is on the firm’s website, www.legendauctions.com. The next Regency Auction, number 25, is now closed for consignments and will be held on January 25, 2018. The firm will have Regency Auctions in May, July, September, and November. A major announcement regarding our May 2018 Regency Auction will be coming shortly so stay tuned. If you have coins to consign, contact either Julie Abrams or Greg Cohen to discuss your coins.
