Two-Session Auction Brings Record Prices In Bust Halves and High-End 20th Century Coins.
(Lincroft, NJ)— Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to announce the very strong results of 28th Regency Auction. After 28 Regency Auctions, held as the official auctioneer of the PCGS Members Only Show, Legend has more than proven that their boutique style auctions bring out the most serious buyers and coins consigned bring in prices that exceed similar coins at other auction companies. Featuring 665 hand-selected, high-quality rare coins, this was the second auction in the firm’s history that required two sessions to present the wide variety of important, historic, and rare coins. Like the firm’s May Regency Auction, the first day’s auction focused on a single denomination, this time being half dollars. The second day of the Regency Auction featured half cents through patterns.
Half dollar day, as it was dubbed, proved that half dollars, “could bring big dollars,” as Laura Sperber put it. The surprise of the session was when lot 172, a monster toned 1958 Franklin half, arguably one of the finest examples of the entire series rocketed out of the stratosphere with a final bid at $129,500, setting a world record for any Franklin half-dollar! However, the session was anchored by two important collections, of very popular series. Starting off the Session was the famous Konstantine Collection, the #1 PCGS Registry set of Capped Bust Half Dollars, 1807-1836, featuring the major “Red Book” varieties. This was the first time that we could ascertain that such a set of the 73 major varieties were sold in a single auction, and the results proved to be very strong, thrilling the consignor and all the successful bidders alike, as they were able to acquire some once in a generation coins. Coins like lot 1, the beautiful, Bearded Goddess, which was previously in the Norweb Collection, now graded PCGS AU53 CAC and is among the three finest known kicked off the fireworks when several Bust Half Nuts bid it to $58,750 from an opening bid of $33,000. (Note: all prices realized include the firms 17.5% Buyer’s Premium).
“From the moment the Konstantine Collection was announced back in July, every major collector of Bust halves has been waiting for this auction,” said Julie Abrams, President of Legend Auctions. “We took out all the stops in the marketing efforts, including hosting a small gathering of collectors during the ANA show in Philadelphia, where every coin was on display. The event was very well attended by the ‘who’s who’ among serious collectors. These efforts proved to get the strong action going, with a standing room only crowd who came out to the auction to bid in person. This record attendance was led to the impressive list of prices realized below.”
Highlighted results of the Konstantine Collection include:
- Lot 1 1807 Bearded Goddess, O-111B. PCGS AU53 CAC realized $58,750
- Lot 4 1807 O-114. PCGS MS65 CAC, ex Green-Newman realized $188,000
- Lot 14 1812/1 Large 8, O-101. PCGS AU50 realized $31,725
- Lot 22 1815/2 O-101A. PCGS MS63 realized $55,813
- Lot 41 1823 Broken 3. O-101. PCGS MS64 CAC Ex Green/Newman realized $38,775
- Lot 51 1827/6 O-102. PCGS MS66 CAC Ex Pogue realized $36,425
“In all, when the hammer fell on lot 73, over $1.3 million dollars were spent on Capped Bust half dollars,” explained Laura Sperber, founder of LRCA. She noted, “for nearly two months, the entire market has been buzzing with excitement for these coins, so going into the session, I knew the Konstantine Collection was going to bring very strong to beyond strong money. My expectations were quickly blown away!”
Following the Konstatine Collection was a great offering of Early, Seated, and Barber half dollars. The selection included the following important highlights that found their way into important collections such great type coins like: Lot 93 1830 Large 0. PCGS MS66 realizing $24,675 and Lot 95 1836 Reeded Edge. PCGS MS64 CAC realized $79,313.
The Sommelier Collection of Early Date Walking Liberty Half Dollars was the second anchor collection, and when the hammer gaveled the last lot, the 25 coins realized over $400,000! Julie Abrams was sitting in the back of the room when the collector “looked back at me at one point and just smiled and gave a huge ‘thumbs up.’” Clearly, they should be happy, just take a look at these amazing results:
Lot 110 1917-D Obverse. PCGS MS65+ CAC realized $21,150
- Lot 115 1918-D PCGS MS65 CAC realized $27,025
- Lot 121 1920-D PCGS MS65 CAC realized $27,025
- Lot 125 1921-S PCGS MS65 CAC realized $117,500
- Lot 128 1928-S PCGS MS65 CAC realized $15,863
The session ended with additional Walking Liberty, Franklin and Classic Commemorative Half Dollars from various consignors. Franklin Half Dollars have really become a very popular series recently. Whether the market for them is maturing and realizing enough time has passed that they can now be considered a classic series in the annals of American Numismatics. Either way, there are many serious collectors vying for the very finest. Two such coins were offered in the Half Dollar Day auction session, far surpassing any previous records, and bringing prices that are just way beyond “moon money”! The first was the aforementioned record-shattering realization of $129,500 for the magnificent and wildly toned 1958 and the finest 1949-S half dollar, also graded PCGS MS67+ FBL CAC realized $31,725.

The second session of the 28th Regency Auction took place on Thursday evening, September 27. You could sense the how active bidding was going to be the moment the sale opened, as many collectors added great coins to their collections. Twentieth-century coins had great results overall. The Hallett Collection of Mercury Dimes, the current #5 and all-time #9 Registry set brought impressive prices. “It is not often that a top ten Registry Set comes up for auction, and the prices prove that when a great collection comes up, the buyers run out to buy the coins. In many cases our estimates proved way too low,” Julie Abrams said. The surprise of the collection was lot 367, the PCGS MS67+ FB CAC 1925 dime that realized $25,850 on an estimate of $3,500 to $4,000. Other Mercury dimes consigned alongside the Hallett coins fared extremely well, with beyond moon money realized for multiple coins including. Overall the prices were indicative of the overall market, with great coins selling for great prices.

Laura Sperber noted after the last lot sold on Thursday evening, “The market is continuing to show renewed strength, as new, well-heeled collectors are building epic collections. Whether they are working on one set or many different projects, if they see a coin they need, they just go after it. In the current environment, clearly, PCGS/CAC coins were bringing the absolute strongest realized prices throughout the auction. These collectors equate PCGS/CAC with the best quality coins.”
“The market for high-quality rare coins is healthy, robust, and we are seeing lots of new names and faces. The public turnout at the PCGS Members show was very large, larger than normally seen. We know with so few opportunities going into the last months of 2018, there will be only a few more opportunities to buy great coins. Legend’s 29th Regency Auction, being held on November 15 in San Antonio will be one of the last, and we have lots of great coins consigned to that sale,” noted Julie Abrams. “Consignments are now closed, but we are always taking consignments for upcoming auctions, so give us a call. Our boutique auction venue gets the best prices for the best coins!”

Legend Rare Coin Auctions to Offer The Konstantine Collection of Capped Bust Half Dollars, the #1 Collection of Capped Bust Half Dollars with Major Varieties, 1807-1836 on the PCGS Set Registry.
(Lincroft, NJ—July 30, 2018)—Legend Rare Coin Auctions today announces with great honor and pride that the Kontantine Collection of Capped Bust Half Dollars will be auctioned in Regency Auction 28, on September 26, 2018, the official auction of the PCGS Members Show. Anchoring the firm’s second two-day Regency Auction, this world class collection was very carefully assembled by a very astute specialist collector over several years. The Konstanine Collection includes many finest known or high Condition Census pieces, many pedigreed to some of the greatest collections ever assembled. The composition for the Registry Set is made up of the 73 major varieties of Capped Bust half dollar listed in A Guide Book of United States Coins, struck from 1807 to 1836 when the Lettered Edge type was discontinued.
In the Introduction to the Collection, Legend wrote of the Capped Bust series and the Konstantine Collection in particular:
In all of American Numismatics, the Capped Bust Half Dollar is one of the most popular series to collect and has delighted collectors for ages. Looking at the series, there is a lot to like. It combines a beautiful, charming design, large size, precious metal content, and a history that goes back to where America began to “grow up.” Because of their place in a larger economic sense, Capped Bust half dollars, perhaps more than any other 19th century type, is widely available to collectors in all qualities, making them a wonderful specialty whether your budget allows for six figure purchases, or a more modest three-figures. There are attractive coins in all ranges where you can build a collection that will be both meaningful to you as the collector, and impressive for even the unacquainted to enjoy.
The Konstantine Collection currently ranks as the #1 PCGS Registry Set of the Red Book listed varieties, an assemblage of 73 different coins, and is 100% complete. To be #1, you know that the coins are going to be high grade, and the collector was diligent in buying not just high-grade coins, but high quality for the grade as well. As you read the descriptions, you will find coins pedigreed to other great collections of the past: Eliasberg, Norweb, Pogue, Gardner, Newman, Link, and others. It becomes apparent as you review each of the coins in the collection, that the collector carefully selected coins that would appeal to a very wide range of collectors, with wonderful quality coins that will fit in nearly every budget. Once the hammer falls on the final lot, the Konstantine Collection will rightly join its place among the great collections of Capped Bust half dollars.
Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud and honored to offer this amazing collection in Regency Auction 28. It is the hope of the consignor and Legend Rare Coin Auctions that each of these 73 coins finds itself in another world-class collection. Whether you are interested in just a single, magnificent gem for a type set, an interesting representative of a date, or need that Condition Census Overton variety for your specialized die variety set, there is no doubt that the Konstatine Collection will have something for you.
“We are very excited to sell this world class collection,” exclaims senior numismatist, Greg Cohen, who cataloged the collection. “There are several varieties that are listed that are major rarities in the collection, difficult to locate in any grade; completing this set can be a Herculean task. While the majority of the coins are Mint State, there are a number of coins that are circulated, making this a true collector’s set”
Of the major varieties that are rarities in the series, regardless of condition, the following stand out:
- 1807 O-111B. The Bearded Goddess. PCGS AU53 CAC.
- 1812/1 O-101A. Large 8. PCGS AU50
- 1815/2 O-101A. PCGS MS63
- 1817/4 O-102. PCGS VF35 Ex Pogue
- 1830 O-114. Large Letters Reverse. PCGS XF45
“There are many coins that may be described as ‘irreplaceable,’” Cohen continued. “While some of the coins are known primarily to serious students of the series. There are many coins that are considered among the finest or the finest for the variety, those coins, while not necessarily rare in the absolute sense are extremely so in the condition that are contained in the Konstatine Collection and are fabulous coins for collectors of high grade type to include in their sets. The coins that fall into this category, you can clearly tell, were selected with care to include only very eye appealing coins.”
Among these highlights are:
- 1807 O-114. Large Stars. PCGS MS65 CAC
- 1808 O-103. PCGS MS67 CAC
- 1814 O-103. PCGS MS66+ CAC
- 1824/1 O-101. PCGS MS64+ CAC

Firm’s 27th Regency Auction sees fierce bidding throughout 604 lot auction
(Lincroft, NJ—July 27, 2018)—Legend Rare Coin Auctions presented a powerful auction in conjunction with the July PCGS Members Only Show on Thursday, July 26, 2018. With a crowd of bidders in the room, large numbers of bidders online and on the phone, many records fell. With 604 lots, the Regency Auction 27 was the largest single-day auction in the firm’s history and featured several important named collections but kept its boutique appeal. While the summer used to be considered a slower-paced time of year, as the firm’s president, Julie Abrams, explained this year, the market really seems to have heated up in July:
“Despite the blistering 113 degrees heat outside – or perhaps to some extent because of it – the auction room filled up with so many bidders that auction staff had to scramble to find more chairs before the auction started.
The RanJack Collection.
Like the May Regency Auction, the July Regency Auction was anchored by a world-class collection of Morgan Dollars. The RanJack Collection began the auction with a very strong start. The premium quality of the coins in the collection, a nearly complete set of Morgan dollars, attracted fierce bidding from the moment the sale was posted online nearly at the end of June. As soon as bidding began on Lot 1, an 1878 7 Tail Feather, Reverse of 1878 in PCGS MS66+ CAC, the action was intense! After a bidding war that included no fewer than seven bidders, it ended up realizing a record-shattering price of $43,475, nearly triple the previous record for the issue! This was not the only coin to bring strong to record prices during the RanJack Collection portion of the evening. Please note all prices reported include the 17.5% buyer’s premium.
“Leading off the sale was the RanJack collection of Morgan Dollars, which was extremely well received by enthusiastic bidders. As has become the norm at Legend, the collection proved that a masterfully assembled collection will attract all of the right bidders, especially when presented in a small, focused, high-quality sale. Buyers love not having to sort through thousands of second rate coins, and sellers love to see their collections given a well-deserved spotlight.” said Julie Abrams. “We are just ecstatic with the results of the RanJack Collection! The action started off with a real bang, and the momentum continued through the rest of the RanJack Collection with 95% of the coins selling to COLLECTORS! After the dust settled, the RanJack Collection surpassed our presale hammer expectations by nearly $100,000! Just take a look at these results”:
Lot 10. 1881 PCGS MS66+ CAC realized $4,700
Lot 14. 1882-S PCGS MS68 CAC realized $9,988
Lot 21. 1885 PCGS MS67+ CAC realized $5,875
Lot 29. 1887-S PCGS MS66+ CAC Ex Jack Lee II, realized $44,650
Lot 43. 1893 PCGS MS65+ CAC realized $9,988
Lot 44. 1893-O PCGS MS64 CAC Ex NFL Set, realized $35,250
Lot 56. 1898-O PCGS MS67+ CAC realized $12,338
Lot 68. 1902-S PCGS MS66+ CAC realized $22,325.
Silver dollars from other consignments continued after the RanJack Collection. The real star of was the record shattering realization of lot 95, the superb 1892-O PCGS MS66+ CAC that realized $79,313 after a heated round of bidding. Toned dollars, both Morgan and Peace issues continued to bring strong prices, especially lot 160, a 1927-S in PCGS MS65 CAC from the Liberty Sunrise Collection, brought $12,925.
The Balance of the Sale.
Type coins began at lot 171 with the South Texas Collection. The highest grossing lot in the sale was from this group of 18th century type coins when lot 174 the superb 1794 large cent, Ex. Lord St. Oswald, in PCGS MS66+ BN CAC realized $246,750. Also from that group was the GEM AU58+ 1796 dime that realized $29,375.
“Early U.S. type coins, especially high grade and premium quality coins always bring strong bidding from collectors. There are never enough to satisfy demand,” explained Greg Cohen, the senior numismatist for the firm. “When a small but powerful group comes out into the market, expect there to be strong prices. With every coin in the South Texas Collection PCGS/CAC, they attracted a lot of attention from bidders. It doesn’t hurt that every coin was hand selected by our founder, Laura Sperber, for their inclusion in the set.”
Following the South Texas coins was another select grouping of type coins from the Pharma Collection. Featuring some high end 19th and 20th century types, all hand selected again for this collection by Laura Sperber, the quality was exceptional, and the prices reflect that.
Lot 190. $1 1897 PCGS PR68 CAM CAC realized $58,750
Lot 191. $2.50 1871 PCGS MS65 CAC realized $43,475
Lot 193. $5 1904 PCGS MS67 CAC realized $34,075
The rest of the sale remained extremely strong. The Chester Roche Collection, an estate holding of gold coins put away 20-25 years ago, saw intense bidding, especially for PCGS-graded, CAC-approved specimens, a pattern that continued with the gold coins from other important consignments. Like Regency Auction 26, the sale closed with an extensive offering of patterns from the Stephen Cook Collection, that again saw intense bidding.
“Collectors really came out for the patterns,” Laura Sperber said. “We saw a record number of bidders for patterns come out for this selection, including a bidder who was ‘a blast from the past,’ someone we have not seen in some 20 years! Collectors are finally realizing what a great value they are at today’s levels. Like the dollars, 95% of the lots went right into collections! Who knows if they will ever come out again.”

“After our huge auction in May, we were blown away by the number of consignments that came in for the July Auction,” Laura Sperber continued. “We do not want to ever lose the boutique feel of our auctions, so we worked very hard vetting consignments. In the end we had to pass on close to 150 coins that just would not fit our auction, either in terms of value or quality. Having proven that Legend’s quality over quantity, boutique approach results is very strong prices for our consignors. Know that we will never stray from that. We set a very high bar.”
Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ next Regency Auction is going to be a two-day event on September 26 and 27 at the Cosmo in Las Vegas, as always as the official auctioneer for the PCGS Members Only Show. Two major collections have already been consigned to Regency Auction 28. Consignments are now being accepted for that important event and will be accepted until the end of the 2018 ANA World’s Fair of Money, August 13-18. Whether you have a single rarity, a few duplicates, or an entire collection, Legend Rare Coin Auctions will present your coins to their finest advantage, resulting in the highest possible prices. David Lawrence Rare Coins, on behalf of Dell Loy Hansen, acquired one of the fifteen known examples of the world-famous 1804 Draped Bust Dollar, known as the “King of American Coins” for $2.64 million via the Heritage Auctions event on June 14th, hosted by the Long Beach Coin Expo. As one of only eight Class I 1804 dollars, it was struck in the mid-1830s as part of special sets to be given as diplomatic gifts. This piece is graded Proof 62 by PCGS.
Known as the Mickley-Hawn-Queller specimen, the piece has a long history that can be traced back to at least 1847. In its most recent prior auction appearance in August 2013, it realized $3,877500 in a Heritage auction. While the present offering brought far less than what was anticipated by most, it was this opportunity that encouraged John Brush, President of David Lawrence Rare Coins (DLRC), to enter the bidding.
Mr. Brush stated, “We were ecstatic to be a part of the purchase of such a legendary numismatic rarity. We purchased the coin on behalf of our partner, Dell Loy Hansen, to be added to his incredible collection. We had discussed the coin prior to the auction, but the decision to bid on it was literally made 5-10 lots before it was auctioned. With the previous auction records from 2008 and 2013 at $3.7-$3.8M, we thought it would be a bargain if we could acquire it somewhere below $3M. In the end, we thought the final realization of $2,640,000 was a fantastic value, and we were very happy to add it to the fantastic collection of Mr. Hansen.”
Businessman Dell Loy Hansen, owner of the Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team and partner with John Brush at DLRC, has been in the process of building a world-class coin cabinet to rival the Eliasberg Collection of U.S. Coins over the past three years. The 1804 dollar was an addition that many thought would elude him. However, his patience was rewarded in this acquisition, and it appears that he obtained the coin at a significant value. As Mr. Hansen stated, “This is another important piece for our ‘Quest for Eliasberg,’ and we are excited to add it to the collection.” With the curatorial help of John Brush and the team at David Lawrence, the collection now contains in excess of 10,000 coins, many of which are the finest graded. Seconded only by the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian, the D.L. Hansen Collection now surpasses in quality (according to the PCGS Set Registry) the legendary collection of Louis Eliasberg, and is considered by many as the Greatest U.S. Coin Collection of All-Time.
Historically, the 1804 dollar has long been considered the world’s most valuable coin. However, several pieces have entered the market in recent years, amongst them a 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, of dubious legal origin, that realized $7.59 million in 2002. Still, the 1804 dollar is one of the hobby’s most famous rarities and is coveted by collectors the world over.

Diverse offering of rarities will make the July temperature in Vegas even hotter
(June 20, 2018—Lincroft, NJ)—If you think Las Vegas is HOT in July, step inside our auction room—the atmosphere will be even hotter! Legend Auctions is proud to have produced yet another mindboggling auction for the 27th Regency Auction. The amazing coins in this sale could possibly beat the record-breaking results in our May 2018 Regency Auction 26. As always, the Regency Auction is the official Auction of the PCGS Member’s Show; July’s event will be conducted at Caesar’s Palace on Thursday, July 26, 2018 beginning at 4:30 PST.
With 604 lots, the July 2018 Regency Sale is anchored by eight SUPERB consignments:
The RanJack Morgan Dollar Collection—a very high-end quality collection of Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans mint Morgans. Many of these are among the FINEST known and all were hand selected by a very picky collector over the course of more than two decades.
The Aurora Borealis Collection—a few more select duplicates from this monster collection of amazing toned dollars.
The Liberty Sunrise Collection—a complete set of Peace dollars offering original toning. The degree of toning varies from light gold to superb bag toning. Many pieces were purchased at previous Legend Auctions.
The South Texas Collection—a partial 18th century U.S. type set assembled by a very fastidious collector client of Legend Numismatics. Each coin was hand selected for the client by Laura Sperber, and every coin is PCGS-graded and CAC-approved. Each coin in this collection is a highlight! The collector is now moving on to another area of numismatics.
The Pharma Collection—a selection of coins from a Legend Numismatics collector client who sold the majority of his collection previously. The coins in RA27 were retained as his favorites. He is now retiring and decided to sell of these remaining highlights. What a killer group of 19th century type coins! Again, since every coin was purchased from Legend, and hand selected by Laura Sperber, each coin is PCGS/CAC and has awesome eye appeal.
The Huron Hills Collection—selections from a collection that is now being refocused. Each coin is PCGS/CAC and very high end! This group’s focus is Morgan dollars, Walkers, and commems.
The Chester Roche Collection—fresh to the market, this collection of 49 pieces is a wonderful holding of gold dollars and quarter eagles. The collector was active back in the mid to late 1990s and many of the coins are housed in old green tag PCGS holders.
The Steven Cook Collection of Patterns, Part 2—the final installment of this very extensive collection of pattern coins. A very diverse offering of issues, including many R-7 Judd numbers. Part 1 was sold in our May Regency Auction and was very well received. This second part has a neat offering of off-metal gold patterns and some GEM silver dollar patterns in copper.
“We are extremely excited about the Regency Auction 27! The sale features so many high-end and FRESH to the market coins, the quality of the sale is remarkable,” explained Julie Abrams, LRCA President. “This is one of the greatest grouping of collections we have ever presented for auction!”
Founder Laura Sperber interjected, “Every coin in the South Texas and Pharma Collections is a highlight! Our favorites from these two collections, hand assembled by Legend Numismatics for two very picky collectors, include: H10C 1796 13 Stars. MS65+, the 25C 1796 PCGS AU53, and the out of this world 50C 1795 PCGS MS64+ and 5C 1908 PCGS PR67 CAM CAC. This coin is virtually a DCAM, $1 1897 PCGS PR68 CAM CAC, $2.50 1871 PCGS MS65 CAC, $20 1906 PCGS MS66 CAC.”
Julie Abrams continued, “Morgan dollar collectors will be able to bid on many amazing superb GEM examples from the RanJack and Aurora Borealis Collections. Collectors of better date gold will certainly be excited by the Chester Roche Collection, and its offering of high grade, rare gold dollars and quarter eagles. Pattern specialists will certainly find many coins of interest in Part 2 of the Steven Cook Collection.”
“Presented alongside the anchor consignments are hand-selected coins from a wide variety of sources. Every numismatic enthusiast will find many great coins at all price points from $1,000 to over $250,000,” notes Greg Cohen, senior numismatist for the firm. “There are many important rarities in many series from other consignors as well. This sale presents a very important opportunity to buy AMAZING coins. Just take a look at the highlights listed below. There will be something for everyone in this sale, and we anticipate record participation, as we saw in New Orleans.”
“Demand for inclusion in this sale was white hot,” Laura Sperber explained. “The Legend team vetted each coin for this important sale, and there were over 100 coins that were submitted for consignment, that we did not take because of value or quality considerations. Clearly what is being offered is exceptional! Know that we really do make it so you can bid with confidence that you will get a very impressive coin!”

Jun 11, 2018 | Auctions, News
(June 11, 2018) — The recent Sotheby’s Historic Coins and Medals Auction in New York set new price records with Morgan silver dollars certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) for authenticity and grade.
“The six most valuable coins sold in the auction were graded by PCGS, and a total of 86 of the 100 coins in the complete Morgan dollar set offered by Sotheby’s were certified by Professional Coin Grading Service. PCGS helps maximize the value of your coins while providing the greatest liquidity,” said PCGS President Don Willis.
Three record-setting coins from the collection of Ralph and Lois Stone are of special note for their condition rarity and desirability.
An 1884-S Morgan graded PCGS MS67, estimated at $300,000 to $500,000, sold for $735,000.
The “King of Morgan Dollars,” an 1893-S graded PCGS MS65, also sold for $735,000 and also against a pre-auction estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. The previous auction record for an 1893-S of that grade was $646,250 set in 2014.
An 1892-S dollar, graded PCGS MS67, was estimated at $250,000 to $350,000 and sold for $495,000, breaking the previous $446,500 record set in 2015 for that date and grade.
“The ’92-S is rather common in circulated grades, but a true rarity in higher mint state. The outstanding Sotheby’s auction proved there is continuing demand for truly scarce, high-grade classic United States coins,” explained Willis.

A legendary Class I Original 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar, the Mickley-Hawn-Queller specimen graded PCGS PR-62, will be just one of the historic, numismatic rarities certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) offered by Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) at the Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectible Expo (www.LongBeachExpo.com), June 14-16, 2018.
“Only eight Class I examples are known of the fabled 1804-dated dollars, one of the most popular of all United States rare coins. This one certainly will become the highlight of its next proud owner’s collection,” said PCGS President Don Willis.
According to PCGS CoinFacts (www.PCGSCoinFacts.com), even though the date on the coin is 1804, “…the first 1804 silver dollars were struck in or about 1834 when orders came from the State Department for special sets of coins to be struck for diplomatic purposes.”
Some of the remarkable PCGS-certified coins that will be offered on Thursday, June 14, in the Premier section of Heritage’s June 14-17 Long Beach Signature Auction are in the older, green insert label holders.
“Among the major attractions in the auction are outstanding items from a 22-coin type set, and each coin was carefully chosen for rarity and condition,” explained Willis.
In addition to the 1804 dollar, other highlights from that type set include:
- One of the finest known 1793 Chain America cents With Period (S-4, B-5, R.3). It is graded PCGS MS-65 BN CAC and was formerly in the Eliasberg Collection.

(Lincroft, NJ—May 18, 2018) Nearly double the number of lots in a typical Regency Auction, Legend’s 26th Regency, held over two days in New Orleans attracted the largest number of viewers, registrants and bidders in the firm’s history. Directly leading to an explosion of activity prior to and during the live auction sessions. In all, 855 lots crossed the auction block, with 237 silver dollars making up the first ever thematic session dubbed “Dollar Day.” With anchor consignments of Morgan and Peace dollars sold on Wednesday and major collections of Barber dimes and quarters, toned Proof Indian cents, three cent nickels, toned Walking Liberty half dollars, Carson City half eagles and Patterns making up Thursday’s Auction session. The firm reports a 20% increase in the number of registered bidders from the previous record achieved at Regency Auction 23. Proving yet again that the boutique Regency Auctions presented by Legend Rare Coin Auctions is a powerhouse in the numismatic auction business. The official auctioneer for the PCGS Member’s Show brings out the biggest and best buyers resulting in netting exceptionally strong results for consignors.
Regency Auction 26 began with an explosive start. The first day’s offerings, focused solely on silver dollars, anchored by the P.F.M. Collection of Morgan Dollars, selections from the world-famous Aurora Borealis Collection of Toned Morgan Dollars and the Crow River Collection of Peace Dollars. In all, the 237-lot auction session saw record-breaking participation from numismatic enthusiasts from all over the world. Amongst the most notable pieces, the highest grossing lot in the session was the 1892-S dollar in MS65 PCGS from the P.F.M. Collection, the current # 6 PCGS Registry Set, realizing $193,875.

“Silver dollars have always been a major part of our firm’s legacy,” Julie Abrams, President of Legend Rare Coin Auctions said after the conclusion of Dollar Day. “Now the P.F.M. and Crow River Collections are among the great collections of silver dollars we have been privileged to auction over the years, all of which have brought record numbers—we are proud to add these two collections to our list of record breaking silver dollar auctions.”
“We knew early on that the concept of Dollar Day would attract not just great consignments that came in after the announcement was made, but it would bring out the very best, strongest buyers to the auction. We had so many requests to view lots ahead of time—in our California and New York City official previews, special requests at Central States, and appointments for private viewings in our headquarters that these amazing collections would attract record prices,” added Greg Cohen, senior numismatist for LRCA.
The Regency Auction continued the evening of Thursday, May 17. From the start, bidding was fierce, with drawn-out bidding warfare breaking out on many lots. The Premier Collection featured duplicates from a world-class collection of Proof Barber Dimes, Mint State Barber Quarters and Walking Liberty Half Dollars assembled quietly and patiently by an astute Legend Numismatics client. Following the Premier Collection, many coins realized well in excess of their estimates, in some cases double the estimate or more! Historically important coins experienced extremely strong demand, including the GEM Fugio Copper and Confederate Cent Restrike. Selections from the Aurora Borealis Collection of toned Indian cents drew attention from specialist collectors realizing strong bids across the board. Silver type coins also attracted extremely strong bidding, especially for fresh to the market GEM quality issues. A small, high powered group of Seated half dimes and other 19th-century silver realized well in excess of presale estimates exceeding expectations. Coins with beautiful toning sparked a fire among collectors, with the toned Walking Liberty half dollars featured in the Dale Larsen Collection eliciting exceptional results overall. The small selection of classic commemoratives proved that there is life to this series that has just been battered over the years. Gold coins in all series glittered and glowed. Anchored by the Oak Crest Collection of Carson City Half Eagles, advanced collectors, gold bugs and many other enthusiastic buyers alike duked it out to win the coins of their fancy. “The Regency Auction enjoyed record phone, internet and live bidding in the room through both nights’ sales. We have never seen such a turnout for our auctions,” Laura Sperber observed. “The lot viewing table in New Orleans was standing room only from open ‘til close. Once bidding began, in many cases there were multiple bidders battling it out to bring home the numismatic prize they desired! The stats don’t just speak for themselves, they scream! There were over 100,000 unique page visits. All the exposure we gave the coins in our worldwide marketing campaign prior to the sale and lot viewing across the country, made sure that every coin was seen by the largest possible group of buyers.”
Julie Abrams added, “Legend’s special brand of boutique auctions, with hand-selected consignments, and expert descriptions have yet again brought out the biggest and best buyers, helping our consignors realize maximum value for their prized rarities. We are always accepting consignments for our upcoming auctions, and the July Regency Auction already has hundreds of great, fresh to the market coins: including a “mini pre-1800 type set,” a world-class Morgan dollar collection from a well-known specialist, the Chester Roche Collection of Gold Coins, and Part 2 of the Steven Cook Pattern Collection”
