The American Numismatic Association is proud to announce the Official Auctioneers for the 2020 and 2021 World’s Fair of Money.
Heritage Auctions and Stack’s Bowers Galleries will continue to provide auction services for the World’s Fair of Money in the years 2020 and 2021—on the heels of completing a six-year run conducting successful auctions for the annual ANA convention.
“We’re delighted that ANA members and World’s Fair of Money attendees will be able to consign to and purchase from Heritage Auctions and Stack’s Bowers Galleries – both of which have a long and successful history with the ANA,” said ANA Executive Director Kimberly Kiick. “Both auction houses have been long-standing supporters of our educational mission, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them return as the Official Auctioneers for the show.”
Stack’s Bowers Galleries and Heritage Auctions each will conduct separate auctions for the next two World’s Fair of Money Official Auctions. The 2020 show will be held Aug. 4-8 in Pittsburgh, Penn.; the 2021 show will return to the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill., Aug. 10-14. Both organizations will be conducting auctions at the 2019 World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Aug. 13-17.
The World’s Fair of Money is the nation’s premier numismatic event, featuring the most expansive educational programs and the best numismatic inventory available anywhere. The show features hundreds of numismatic dealers; live auctions conducted by preeminent auction firms; the ANA’s signature Museum Showcase, exhibiting some of the world’s most valuable and beautiful coins and paper money; collector exhibits; as well as educational presentations, seminars and social events.

Young Numismatists will continue to receive support from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES). Last year, the organization generously donated $50,000 to support the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar. The money has provided for the establishment of all-expense-paid scholarships for Young Numismatists to attend the week-long program, many of whom might not otherwise be able to participate. In all, 30 Young Numismatists are able to attend the event this year with scholarship support.
The donation also will make a lasting impact during the annual Summer Seminar Young Numismatist Benefit Auctions. Coordinated and led entirely by young collectors, the money from the EPNNES will double the amount raised this year by matching auction revenue dollar for dollar, up to $50,000.
Last year, the auctions raised $30,539.85. Anyone is allowed to bid on items and proceeds support Young Numismatists scholarships and other seminar events.
The late Eric P. Newman, who became a member of the ANA in 1935, is widely remembered and respected for his work as an author, researcher and speaker. In 1958, he and his wife, Evelyn, established the EPNNES, which is dedicated to helping fellow numismatists realize their own potential.
Newman served as an ANA Summer Seminar instructor and was an advocate for the program, which seeks to equip numismatists with the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in the numismatic community.
Held annually on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs (adjacent to the ANA), the Summer Seminar is a once-a-year opportunity for numismatic learning and camaraderie that offers students a varied selection of weeklong courses designed for discovery or continued study. For many students, the Summer Seminar is a life-changing event. It has catapulted the careers of several of the nation’s most respected collectors, authors and dealers.
Andy Newman, son of Eric Newman and president of the EPNNES, noted that his father was a huge supporter of young collectors. “Dad cared deeply about building knowledge and involvement in young numismatists. He loved giving numismatic badges to Boy Scouts and instructing at the ANA Summer Seminar,” he said. “He would be greatly honored by the association of his name with this fine program.”

ANA Governors Review Finances and Investments
The American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) 2019 National Money Show® in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, welcomed a total of 3,002 people to the three-day event, held March 28-30 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. “The Pittsburgh convention was very successful thanks to the combined efforts of the great ANA staff and the tremendous support provided by PAN [Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists] and its volunteers,” said ANA President Gary Adkins. “The show was well attended and the venue overlooking the river and skyline was incredible.”
During the show’s opening ceremonies on Thursday morning, President Adkins presented National Money Show Host Chair Pat McBride with the ANA Goodfellow Award in recognition of his service. Adkins also recognized the host club, the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists and its president, Tom Uram, with the Lewis S. Werner Host Club Award.
The event featured 180 companies buying and selling coins, currency and related items; a wide range of numismatic educational presentations led by notable speakers; a three-session sale by Kagin’s Auctions; and exhibits of priceless rarities from private collections and the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum in Colorado Springs.

ANA President Gary Adkins addresses attendees during the PAN-hosted dinner to kick off the National Money Show.
The week kicked off on Wednesday, March 27 with a dinner hosted by PAN at the Five-Star Diamond Award-Winning LeMont Restaurant, known for its spectacular view of Pittsburgh from atop Mt. Washington. United States Mint Director David Ryder gave the keynote presentation on his efforts to revitalize the Mint, including an increase in marketing coin collecting.
A major draw for numismatists and the general public alike were the collector exhibits and the Museum Showcase. On display were a 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of a mere five struck, and a Class III 1804 silver dollar, one of eight known. Also featured was a1943 Lincoln cent erroneously struck on a bronze planchet, and a world-class case filled with historic Pennsylvania paper money. A 1933 Indian Head eagle (gold $10) on display was a bona fide showstopper.
The Kids Zone offered youngsters a plethora of activities to engage them in coin collecting, including a Treasure Trivia game where they learned about numismatics and earned prizes as they explored the bourse floor in search of answers to trivia questions. A Young Collectors Corner also debuted this year, offering basic information about the hobby.
Former United States Mint Chief Engraver Don Everhart was the guest of honor at the ANA Legacy Series on Thursday afternoon, March 28. During the interview, moderated by Barbara Gregory, editor-in-chief of The Numismatist, attendees learned about his early years, professional challenges, and crowning achievements in the world of numismatic art and design. Everhart elaborated on his decades-long career during his “Money Talks” presentation, “Don Everhart: A Career in Coin Design,” on Friday, March 29. Nearly a dozen free Money Talks presentations were offered at the event, highlighting historically significant events, artistic vision and numismatic objects from around the globe.
Eleven of the 14 individuals who have received the necessary nominations for the 2019 ANA Board of Governors election participated in the Candidates Forum on Friday, March 29 to answer questions and express their views on a number of topics. (Video of the forum can be viewed on money.org/election.) In what can be described as an unusual election, two individuals are running for president, two for vice president and ten candidates are competing for seven governor positions. “This election has the largest number of candidates running that I can remember,” noted former ANA Board President Jeff Garrett. “The election is particularly important this year with so many seats being contested,” he said. “I urge everyone to watch the forum once it is posted.”

Tom Hallenbeck of Hallenbeck Coin Gallery agreed. “The momentum really picked up later in the week,” he said. “We stayed to the very end and it paid off for us. Our sales were great.”
Total attendance was 3,002, reflected as follows:

The 96th annual National Coin Week, April 21-27, a reminder that money is history you can hold
Every coin and piece of money in your pocket, purse or piggy bank not only has a story to tell about people, places and events, it has its own special week.
National Coin Week, April 21-27, celebrates the historical, cultural, artistic and economic importance of money.
Sponsored by the nonprofit American Numismatic Association (ANA) to foster the enjoyment of coins and paper money collecting, the 96th annual event recognizes discoveries and innovation with the theme, “Discover the Past, Envision the Future.”
The ANA will host a variety of National Coin Week activities online and at the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., including:
- A contest for ANA members to use their creative talents to design a coin released in 2069.
- Online daily trivia challenges. Every day of National Coin Week, a new question will be released on the ANA’s Facebookand Twitter accounts and www.NationalCoinWeek.org. Participants submit their answers online for a chance to win prizes.
- The annual coin club trivia challenge, where ANA member clubs test their numismatic knowledge and compete for prizes.

- An open house at the Money Museum on Saturday, April 27, which will include free admission, activities for children and adults, and the minting of the 2019 National Coin Week medallette in the museum’s Mini-Mint.
“Money has long been used to commemorate discovery and invention,” said Andy Dickes, ANA collections manager and coordinator of National Coin Week. “Feats such as the printing press, vaccines, the automobile and reaching the summit of Mount Everest are featured in numismatics. The 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing this year is a great time to celebrate all these achievements.”
Prizes for the design contest and club trivia challenge include:
- Grand prize – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Five Ounce Proof Silver Dollar
- Second prize – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar

Other prizes will be awarded as well.
During the week, the public should be on the lookout for any rare or unique coins in pocket change. This year, coin dealers will release thousands of collectible coins across the nation, kicking off the “Great American Coin Hunt.” Historic, old money will be deliberately placed into circulation by more than 200 members of the group Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers to inspire people to closely look at their money. According to Rob Oberth, coordinator of the Great American Coin Hunt, some coins could have a value of $100 or more.

Participants will discover how the dollar evolved from its 15th-century Tyrolean ancestor, and follow the development and demise of Trade dollars from Spanish cobs to the demonetization of the Maria Theresa thaler in 1971.
Lodging
Students may select from a variety of lodging options to meet their needs, preferences and budget. Most stay in Colorado College campus dorms (adjacent to the ANA), while others elect to stay in nearby hotels. For a complete list of ANA preferred hotels, refer to page 22 of the Summer Seminar Course Catalog.
