New American Eagle, Morgan and Peace Dates

U.S. MintDuring the initial pre-order window for the Morgan & Peace Dollars, the Mint experienced an extraordinarily high volume of BOT traffic. These BOTs were programmed to conduct technology-driven transactions which caused significant interference with many transactions by Mint customers.

To address the issue, the Mint paused the pre-order windows for the remaining Morgan and Peace products until the BOT issues could be resolved. The Mint has now identified a solution that we expect will mitigate most of the issues caused by BOT traffic. Although we are working diligently to put that solution in place, the launch dates for American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins will also be affected. To further increase the opportunity to purchase these high demand products, the Mint will also adjust the household order limits for the new American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins and the remaining Morgan and Peace silver dollars. While these steps will mitigate the impact of BOT traffic and improve overall access to these very popular products, the supply of silver still limits the U.S. Mint’s ability to completely satisfy demand. As a result, not everyone will be able to purchase the coins of their choice.

The revised launch schedules are presented below. Please note the decision to move the American Eagle Silver and Gold product launches ahead of the remaining Morgan and Peace pre-order windows. This decision was based on the Morgan and Peace products’ unavailability to ship until October. Moving up the American Eagle products creates the least disruption for our customers. Our intent is to greatly improve on our ability to deliver the utmost positive U.S. Mint experience that our customers deserve.

The launch dates for the newly-redesigned American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins are as follows:

  • American Eagle SILVER PROOF COIN – W (21EAN), originally scheduled to go on sale 7/1, will now go on sale 7/20

  • American Eagle GOLD PROOF 1/10 OZ 2-COIN SET (NUMBERED COA) (21XK), originally scheduled to go on sale 7/29 will now go on sale 8/5
  • American Eagle SILVER PROOF COIN – S (21EMN), on sale date was moved up from 8/16 to 8/12

First Display in Nearly a Decade of Rare 1921 Roman Finish Proof Saint-Gaudens $20

The 1921 proof Double Eagle discovered in 2006 and now owned by Brian Hendelson, and the recently discovered 1854-S Half Eagle will both be exhibited by Heritage Auctions at 2021 Summer FUN Convention

(Orlando, Florida) June 22, 2021 – Not known to exist until 2006, the 1921 Roman Finish proof Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle authenticated and graded NGC PF64+ CAC, will be publicly displayed in July for the first time in nearly a decade.

From the collection of Brian Hendelson of New Jersey, it will be exhibited by Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) at the Florida United Numismatists (www.FunTopics.com) Summer 2021 Convention in Orlando, July 8-10.

“Heritage will also display the fourth known 1854-S Liberty Half Eagle that was discovered in 2018. Of the four, only two are in private hands including this previously unknown example now encapsulated PCGS XF45, one is in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution and another 1854-S gold $5 has been missing for a half century,” said Jim Stoutjesdyk, Vice President of Numismatics at Heritage.

An 1854-S $5 gold piece was stolen from industrialist Willis duPont in Coconut Grove, Florida in 1967 and is still unaccounted for. The duPont family has declared in writing it has no claims to the coin that will be exhibited at the FUN convention and offered at auction by Heritage along with the 1921 proof Double Eagle later this year.

On display at booth #703 during the FUN summer event, both the 1921 Roman Finish proof Saint-Gaudens $20 and 1854-S Liberty Head $5 will be among the top highlights of Heritage’s Platinum Night auction at the American Numismatic Association’s 2021 Chicago World’s Fair of Money® (www.WorldsFairofMoney.com) in August.

“No examples of Roman Finish proofs for 1921 Double Eagles were known until 2000 when a circulated example was discovered. Then in 2006, the numismatic community was stunned when this second coin in superb condition surfaced and was authenticated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (www.NGCcoin.com),” said Hendelson. “Both proofs are believed to have been struck as presentation pieces by authority of Raymond T. Baker, who was director of the United States Mint in 1921.”

This 1921 proof $20 denomination gold coin has previously only been publicly exhibited twice, at the 2010 and 2013 American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money conventions in Boston and Chicago respectively. A special brochure about the coin and how Hendelson helped discover it and battled to get it will be available at the Heritage Auctions booth at the FUN show.

When it was authenticated in 2006, NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg stated: “The 1921 proof ranks highly among the truly important recent numismatic discoveries…it is earth shattering to encounter a coin like this for the first time outside of a museum or marquis collection. This is world-class numismatic treasure…”

Roman Finish proof coins, also known as Satin Finish proof, were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1909 and 1910, although some examples are known from later years, such as the relatively recent discoveries of the 1921 Roman Finish proof Double Eagles. The Roman Finish combines a brilliant proof surface with a matte finish surface and are considered by some collectors as the most beautiful proof coins struck by the United States.

United States Mint Releases Flagship Video Honoring American Eagle Coin Program

New video highlights an important milestone in the Mint’s signature coin program

WASHINGTON – The United States Mint (Mint) today released a video celebrating the 35-year anniversary of its world-renowned American Eagle Coin Program. The video also highlights a new era in the Program—the release of redesigned American Eagle Gold and American Eagle Silver Coins in 2021. The video is available for viewing at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs6_FTgIX8Y.

Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen, who appears in the video, remarked: “The American Eagle bullion coins are the flagship bullion products of the U.S. Mint, and the new American Eagle bullion coin designs to mark this anniversary are really quite beautiful.”

United States Mint Director David J. Ryder lauded the Mint employees involved in the creation and production of the redesigned American Eagle Gold and American Eagle Silver Coins, saying: “This truly is a collaborative effort made possible by the extraordinary efforts of our talented artists and industrious staff who worked tirelessly to uphold the Mint’s rich tradition of artistic excellence.”

The roughly 15-minute, Mint-produced video includes reflections from former United States Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti and artist Miley Frost, creators of the American Eagle Silver Coin “Heraldic Eagle” and American Eagle Gold Coin “Family of Eagles” designs, respectively. Both iconic images have graced the reverses (tails) of these coins since their debut in 1986. Additional highlights include insights into the artistic processes of United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designers Jennie Norris and Emily Damstra, who created the new gold and silver coin designs, respectively, and a discussion by current United States Mint Chief Engraver Joe Menna on the process of refreshing the obverses (heads) of both coins.

Launching a New Era

In recognition of this 35-year milestone in Mint history and to mark the beginning of a new era in the production of American Eagle Coins, the Mint has redesigned the bullion and collectible versions of the gold and silver coins. Moving forward, the American Eagle Gold reverse will depict a portrait of an eagle with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the face value and size. Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon sculpted the design.

The 22-karat American Eagle Gold Coins are available in four weights: one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, as well as a four-coin set which contains one coin in each weight.

The new American Eagle Silver reverse depicts a single eagle coming in for a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” Former Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso sculpted the design.

The obverse of the gold coins will display a refreshed depiction of the 1907 design by celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, while the obverse of the silver coin will display a refreshed depiction of the 1916 “Walking Liberty” design by famed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.

Additional information about the redesigned 2021 American Eagle Gold and Silver Coins will be available in the coming weeks.

NCBA Opens Survey, Seeks Dealer Data to Help Combat State Government Estimates

The National Coin & Bullion Association is fighting to preserve sales-tax exemptions on coins, paper money, and precious-metals bullion in 39 states, and we are also working to gain such an exemption in the 11 states that do not currently have one.

We are currently seeking 400 coin and precious-metals dealers to take a survey, providing 2020 sales and sales tax collections and 2019 coin show booths/tables data that will allow us to make our case for these exemptions. With this data, our prospects for keeping exemptions and gaining new ones will increase dramatically.

Typically when a state considers enacting a new exemption or possibly revoking an existing exemption,

  • The state’s legislative fiscal office (called different things in different states) begins by estimating the amount of “lost revenue” arising from a sales-tax exemption. This estimate is often ridiculously high. For example, when Virginia was first considering an exemption in 2017, it estimated it would lose up to $14.5 million dollars each year.
  • When NCBA and other organizations seek to set the record straight, we are told that in the absence of hard data, the legislature will assume its own estimates are correct. These inflated estimates then become part of the legislative history and are treated as facts.

To help us combat this misinformation created by the state fiscal offices, we need 400 coin and precious-metals dealers to arm us with data that will demonstrate to state lawmakers that our estimates of numismatic state sales-tax revenue are more accurate than their estimates. All survey responses are anonymous. Optional contact information—should you choose to provide any—will be kept strictly confidential. The survey will take only 10–15 minutes of your time, could potentially save the coin and precious-metals communities tens of thousands of dollars, and possibly help expand your own business.

Five years ago we did a similar survey as a direct response to a concern from the state of Tennessee, where its fiscal agency had challenged the data that we had put before them. Without that survey’s data, Tennessee (and most other states we’ve worked in since then) would have almost certainly fallen back on its own estimates, which we know to be inflated. Instead, its projected decline in estimated state and local sales-tax collections were dramatically reduced. This current survey can provide data that will help affect legislation across the nation.

Please support NCBA and our industry in our efforts to achieve sales-tax exemptions on coins, paper money, and precious-metals bullion nationwide by taking 10–15 minutes to complete our survey. The survey can be accessed at https://bit.ly/3zMECoe and will be available through July 14, 2021.

The Royal Mint and Team GB capture the spirit of the nation with a Commemorative 50p for this year’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

The Royal Mint, the Original Maker of UK coins, has unveiled the official Team GB commemorative 50p to honour Britain’s shining stars competing on the world stage at this year’s Olympic Games.

In collaboration with Team GB, the official keepsake features the Team GB logo and represents the return of all Olympic sports with dynamic sporting icons etched on the canvas of a 50p piece.

Available in Gold, Silver and Brilliant Uncirculated (also available in colour), the coin launches with just over one month to go until the Olympic Games, reigniting the spirit of a nation behind the sporting heroes ‘going for gold’ in Tokyo.

To celebrate the launch, the Original Maker gifted the coin as a good luck token to Team GB qualified athletes and captured photography of the miniature piece of art outside Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium ahead of the big event.

Created by The Royal Mint’s senior designer David Knapton, the coin first appeared in The Royal Mint’s 2020 Annual Set. The new 2021 coin is available from today as an individual piece for sport and coin lovers to cherish.

Characterising ‘a year like no other’, the contemporary design bares the ‘2020’ graphic, while the obverse of the coin reveals the year of production ‘2021’ with the portrait of Her Majesty the Queen – making it a coveted addition to any collection.

The Royal Mint’s Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin Clare Maclennan said: “We have a rich sporting heritage in Great Britain and, inspired by the stories of the athletes preparing for Tokyo 2020, we want to reignite that spirit of unity for Team GB with the launch of the official commemorative coin.

“The design of the coin, with its contemporary sporting icons, flashes of colour and commemorative date on the surface of a 50p, represent the breadth of British sporting talent coming together as one and gives a nod to the vibrancy of the host nation that will resonate with athletes, sports fans and coin collectors ahead of the greatest sporting show on earth.”

Team GB’s Head of Licensing Paul Ellis commented: “Our licensing agreement with The Royal Mint has gone from strength to strength and it gives me great pleasure to launch the official Team GB coin so that fans can show their support for their sporting heroes by owning a special commemorative keepsake with just over a month to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”

The new Team GB coin for 2021 demonstrates The Royal Mint’s continued association with Team GB which enables sports fans of all generations to share the milestone moments of their greatest sporting heroes, while uniting new and existing coin collectors with a popular family activity.

In 2012, The Royal Mint created a series of sporting coins designed by the public for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. When released into circulation, these Olympic coins are some of the most collectable 50ps. The same year, the Royal Mint won the bid to produce the official Olympic medals, showcasing their world-renowned experience in precious metals to the eyes of the sporting world.
