Regency Auction 51 Featuring Specialized Early Dollar and Pattern Collections Bring Glorious Results

(Lincroft, NJ. 4/29/2022)—Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ Regency 51, featuring the first parts of the Dale Friend Collection and Glorious Patterns Collection, took place on the evening of April 28, 2022, and the sale was a roaring success! The sale began with first portion of the Dale Friend Collection, including his collection early silver dollars. From the day the sale went live, a record number of collectors and dealers started watching the sale, tracking the lots. For decades, Dale would attend coin shows, conventions, and auctions all over the United States, seeking out the coins that had “the look.” In those travels, Dale befriended many collectors and dealers, and it was obvious that demand for his coins would be intense.

“Dale was a real collector’s collector,” said Laura Sperber, founder of Legend Rare Coin Auctions. “He was a real friend and supporter of both Legend Rare Coin Auctions and Legend Numismatics. Once we saw what he had left when he passed, we knew the results were going to be very strong, especially in this market. “The results show that even non-CAC approved coins are doing quite well in this market,” Sperber continued.

After the Friend Collection coins sold, the auction progressed into type coins, silver dollars, patterns (anchored by the Glorious Patterns Collection, Part 1), and then gold and commemoratives.

“The Glorious Pattern Collection did far better than we expected. There were many collectors bidding and many of them were new,” said Jessica Berkman, newly named President of Legend Rare Coin Auctions. “The 20C Patterns were especially crazy! Three lots, 326 (The Bass J-1356. PCGS PR65 CAC); 328 (J-1398. PCGS PR65 CAM CAC); and 329 (J-1404. PCGS PR65 RB CAC), estimated at $38,000 realized $95,175!”

Ms. Sperber concluded her comments on the state of the market by saying: “We consider the overall results being very strong. The only areas that showed some weakness was non-CAC Type. Generic gold, of course was super strong, reflecting not just the strength of the numismatic market, but also the increased demand during these uncertain economic times.”

Jack H. Beymer Recipient of PNG’s Renamed Harvey G. Stack Lifetime Achievement Award

The Professional Numismatists Guild announced its 2022 awards on PNG Day, April 27, in conjunction with the Central States Numismatic Society convention

(Schaumburg, Illinois) April 28, 2022 – The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) has named its annual Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of former PNG President Harvey G. Stack of New York City who passed away earlier this year at the age of 93. The 2022 recipient of the newly-named award is veteran California dealer Jack H. Beymer.

“Harvey Stack was an icon of the numismatic world, a respected dealer who emphasized the educational importance as well as enjoyment of collecting. He joined PNG in 1978 and served as our President from 1989 to 1991. The PNG Board voted unanimously to recognize his outstanding achievements by adding his name to one of our most important annual awards,” explained PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

The Harvey G. Stack Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by PNG to a numismatist for his or her extraordinary devotion to numismatics and who, over their lifetime, significantly contributed to the hobby or profession. This year’s recipient, Jack Beymer, has operated Big Oak Plaza Coins in Santa Rosa, California since 1971 and is known nationwide for his passion for the hobby and profession. He joined PNG in 1975.

That award and other 2022 PNG honors were announced at the organization’s awards reception held in conjunction with PNG Day, April 27, at the Central States Numismatic Society convention in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois.

The Robert Friedberg Award, presented to an author in recognition for an outstanding book or other literature, was given to Rusty Goe of Southgate Coins in Reno, Nevada, author of The Confident Carson City Coin Collector. This acclaimed three-volume, 2,500-page reference work is about the historic Nevada branch mint and coins struck there from 1870 to 1893.

The Significant Contribution Award was presented to James A. Simek of NumisGraphic Enterprises in Westchester, Illinois for his exceptional, beneficial efforts over the years on behalf of PNG as well as the profession and the hobby. Simek joined PNG in 1980, has been a member of the PNG Board since 2009, and has served as PNG Secretary since 2015.

The Sol Kaplan Award that recognizes efforts and contributions to combat crimes against the numismatic community was presented to Jack D. Young of Dayton, Ohio for his help to fight fraud and thievery. Young has extensively assisted researchers, third-party grading services, online shopping platforms, and law enforcement in the identification of deceptive fakes offered in the marketplace and is the founder of the Facebook counterfeit watch group, “The Dark Side.”

In a related honor, the Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation (www.ACEFonline.org) presented its annual Alan Kreuzer Memorial Award to Chris Hersey, Senior Special Agent for the United States Department of the Treasury Office of Inspector General. ACEF Director of Anti-Counterfeiting Doug Davis said that Agent Hersey has been instrumental in assisting ACEF in coordinating cases with the different levels of federal agencies responsible for the investigation of counterfeit coins and precious metals. He also assisted ACEF in conducting anti-counterfeiting and numismatic crimes educational seminars for law enforcement in California and Texas.

The PNG also recognized three dealers for 50 years of membership by presenting them with complimentary Lifetime Memberships: Harlan J. Berk of Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., Chicago, Illinois; Lyn F. Knight of Lyn F. Knight, Overland Park, Kansas; and Julian M. Leidman of Bonanza Coins in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Berk, who served as PNG President from 2001 to 2003, joined PNG 51 years ago in 1971, however, last year’s awards ceremony was not held because of the pandemic, so the formal recognition was delayed until this year’s event.

The Professional Numismatists Guild is a nonprofit trade association composed of the country’s top rare coin and paper money dealers who must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise. The Royal Mint launches new City Views London coin

The Royal Mint has released a new City Views London collection of gold and silver coins with a design which features the iconic Tower of London, the ancestral home of the original maker of UK coins.

The coin is the first of new City Views series which celebrates iconic urban landmarks on official UK coin. Based on a long-held numismatic tradition, artists have skilfully rendered intricate details of civic buildings and sprawling suburbs for hundreds of years. Featuring views of landmarks that characterise the world’s greatest cities, they serve as an historical record for future generations.

The inaugural release celebrates the architectural beauty of the London skyline, with the imposing stone fortress built by William the Conqueror at the heart of the reverse design. Inspired by a panoramic scene by the Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–77), the breath-taking horizon has been skilfully remastered by designers at The Royal Mint. The intricate detail of the original illustrations is achieved combining traditional craftsmanship and innovative laser cutting technology.

The commemorative City Views London coins are available in 1kg, 5 oz, 2oz and 1oz gold and silver, with limited mintages, at The Royal Mint.

Introduced in 2018 and authorized by Public Law 115-197, the American Innovation® $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series featuring distinctive reverse (tails) designs that pay homage to America’s ingenuity and celebrate the pioneering efforts of individuals or groups from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories.

The 2022 American Innovation Vermont $1 coin design captures a sense of the energy and exuberance of snowboarding through movement implied by diagonal lines and curved shapes. The coin’s reverse design features a young female snowboarder in the air performing a trick called a “melon grab,” set against a mountainous winter skyline inspired by the landscape of Vermont. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “VERMONT.” The design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Craig Campbell.

The obverse (heads) of all coins in this series features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. AIP Designer Justin Kunz created the design, which was sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.

Incused on the coin’s edge are “2022,” the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

Presidential Silver Medal Honoring Zachary Taylor Available On May 2

WASHINGTON – The Zachary Taylor Presidential Silver Medal will be available for purchase directly from the United States Mint (Mint) starting on May 2 at noon EDT. Taylor was the nation’s 12th U.S. President, serving from March 4, 1849, until July 9, 1850.

The Department of the Treasury has a long-standing tradition of honoring each President of the United States with an official bronze medal struck by the Mint. The Mint is now replicating this series of medals in 99.9 percent fine silver, each measuring 1.598 inches in diameter.

The obverse (heads) of the Zachary Taylor Presidential Silver Medal is by sculptor Henry Kirke Brown, and the reverse (tails) is by sculptor John Reich, United States Mint Assistant Engraver in the early nineteenth century.

The obverse features Taylor’s portrait with the inscriptions “ZACHARY TAYLOR,” “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,” and “1849” along the border of the medal.

The reverse features the inscription “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP,” symbolized by two hands clasped in token of amity. On the cuff of the left wrist are three stripes and buttons; the other wrist is bare. Above the hands, the pipe of peace and the tomahawk are crossed over each other.

Each medal is encapsulated and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
