United States Mint Releases the Final America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ on April 8

WASHINGTON–The United States Mint (Mint) will accept orders for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ honoring the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama beginning on April 8 at noon EDT. This is the 56th and last five ounce silver coin to be released in the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program. Mintage is limited to 20,000 units, with no household order limit.

The coin’s reverse (tails) design depicts a Tuskegee Airman pilot suiting up to join the fight during World War II, with the Moton Field control tower in the background. The pilot looks upward with pride and confidence as two P-51 Mustangs pass overhead. The inscription “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” is arced across the top as a reference to the dual battles the Tuskegee Airmen fought—fascism abroad and racial discrimination at home. Inscriptions are “TUSKEGEE AIRMEN,” “ALABAMA,” “2021,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The obverse (heads) design features a 1932 restored portrait of George Washington.

Each encapsulated coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The 2021 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin—Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is priced at $229.00. The Mint launched the America the Beautiful Quarters Program in 2010 as authorized by Public Law 110–456, the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 (Act). Whitman Publishing Releases New Expanded Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins

(Pelham, Alabama) — Whitman Publishing announces the release of the newly updated and expanded Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins, a resource to help hobbyists keep track of their collections. The 304-page softcover book is available from booksellers and hobby shops nationwide, as well as online (including at www.Whitman.com), for $9.95.

The Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins is a convenient way to keep track of a coin collection. Its 6 x 9–inch size packs a large amount of information into a handy resource that can be carried in a bag or briefcase, or stored in a safe deposit box. Collectors take the book to coin shops and conventions while they’re on the hunt for new numismatic acquisitions, checking each box as they add a coin or upgrade to a better specimen. The book also has room to write notes on when and where specific coins were bought, their grades, pricing, and any other information the collector wants to record.

The Check List and Record Book features actual-size illustrations of each coin type, mintage records for circulation-strike and Proof coins, and coin-by-coin listings of every date and mint. The coins covered include U.S. half cents through gold double eagles, 1790s to date; classic and modern commemorative coins; government-issued commemorative sets; Proof sets and Mint sets; Canadian coins from the 1850s to date; and silver, gold, platinum, and palladium bullion coins. There are sections to keep track of collections of Hard Times tokens; Civil War tokens; other tokens and medals; Hawaiian coins; Puerto Rican coins; coins struck for the Philippines under U.S. sovereignty; misstrikes and error coins; and American Arts gold medallions. The Canadian chapters cover large cents; small cents; five-cent pieces and other circulating denominations; silver and modern coins; commemorative issues; dollar coins; and bullion.

Professional numismatists, appraisers, coin dealers, and experienced collectors know the importance of keeping an accurate inventory. Beth Deisher devotes an entire chapter to the subject in her award-winning book Cash In Your Coins: Selling the Rare Coins You’ve Inherited. Tom Bilotta, in Collecting Coins in Retirement: An Action Guide and Estate Advice for Hobbyists and Their Families, also stresses the value of maintaining accurate records.

“The Check List and Record Book helps you organize and build a better collection,” said Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker. “It can also be useful for tax and insurance purposes, and as a valuable record for your children and grandchildren to understand and appreciate your coins.”

The new Check List and Record Book covers the United States Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint up through 2021, with extra space to keep track of later coins.

Celebrate “Money, Big & BOLD” During 2021 National Coin Week

Activities Offer Hobbyists a Chance to Win Prizes

National Coin Week 2021

Collecting silver dollars has long been a favorite of coin collectors. One hundred years ago, the U.S. Mint reintroduced the Morgan dollar to circulation after a 16-year absence. Later that year, production began on a new silver coin, the Peace dollar. Fifty years ago, minting of the Eisenhower dollar commenced. These numismatic milestones will be celebrated during the 98th annual National Coin Week, April 18-24, with the theme, “Money, Big & BOLD.”

Sponsored by the nonprofit American Numismatic Association (ANA) to foster the enjoyment of coins and paper money collecting, National Coin Week celebrates the historical, cultural, artistic and economic importance of money.

The ANA will host a variety of National Coin Week online activities prior to and during the week-long event:

  • A writing challenge where members can share their research and big, bold collections on the ANA Blog for a chance to win a 2021 Morgan or Peace dollar.
  • A youth activity to create something edible – sweet or savory – that resembles money.
  • ANA eLearning Academy webinars each day with topics focusing on the Morgan, Peace and Eisenhower dollars, the coinage of Julius Caesar, the Lafayette dollar, the 1913 Federal Reserve Act and more.
  • Online daily trivia challenges. Every day of National Coin Week, a new question will be released on the ANA’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and online at www.NationalCoinWeek.org. Participants submit their answers online for a chance to win prizes.
  • The annual coin club trivia challenge, where ANA member clubs test their numismatic knowledge and compete for prizes.
  • Online resources including articles from The Numismatist, promotional documents, links and suggestions from the ANA library.

“National Coin Week is a great time to spread the word about the joys of collecting coins and paper money,” says National Coin Week coordinator Andy Dickes. “We will be celebrating big, bold coins, designs and ideas during the week and all year long.”

Prizes for the design contest and club trivia challenge include:

  • Grand prize – American Eagle 2021 one-tenth ounce gold proof $5 coin
  • Second prize – 2021 Morgan or Peace Silver Dollar (club choice)
  • Third prize – 2021 Morgan or Peace Silver Dollar

Other prizes, including U.S. Mint 2021 proof sets, will be awarded as well.

For additional information, email ncw@money.org, call (719) 482-9814, or visit www.NationalCoinWeek.org.

United States Mint Announces New Authorized Bulk Purchase Program

U.S. MintWASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Mint (Mint) is committed to improving the distribution of our Numismatic coin products. As part of this ongoing effort, the Mint has established a new Authorized Bulk Purchase Program (ABPP), which permits qualifying bulk purchasers to purchase a limited number of numismatic Mint products prior to their official on-sale date under an active embargo agreement allowing their resale only on or after the Mint’s official on-sale date, time, and conditions, such as household order limitations. This new program is structured to better meet marketplace product availability on the initial on sale date by expanding the distribution of Mint products.

United States Mint Authorized Bulk Purchase Program applicants must be active members in the Mint’s existing Numismatic Bulk Purchase Program (NBPP) in good standing for at least two years, have a two-year revenue average with the NBPP of at least $500,000 annually, and have a history of full compliance with the Mint’s excessive returns policy.

This new program will help to enhance the distribution of numismatic Mint products as they go on sale, expanding availability of our products by utilizing well vetted business partners that have long-term relationships with the Mint’s Numismatic Programs. Not all Mint products will be offered through this program, and no more than 10% of products with limited quantities will be distributed under this program. No discounts will be given to ABPP members, and some products will carry a premium. The products available through this program will be distributed equally to Authorized Bulk members. The Mint will not ship product to ABPP members, who must provide their own product security and transport. Pick-ups will be allowed three days prior to the official on-sale date.

June 2021 Long Beach Expo is Canceled

The Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectible Show Scheduled for June 17-19, 2021 Has Been Canceled Due to the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic

(Santa Ana, California) – March 18, 2021 – The Long Beach Expo scheduled for June 17-19, 2021, has been canceled. The triannual Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectible Show will not be occurring in June as had been scheduled due to an abundance of caution as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The announcement comes amid a flurry of other coin show cancelations over the past 13 months as the pandemic continues leading to tens of thousands of new COVID-19 cases in Southern California on a weekly basis. Hope continues building that COVID-19 vaccinations and other mitigation efforts will soon lead to the reintroduction of coin shows and other major events. However, Long Beach Expo convention officials have determined that canceling the June show, which was to be held at the Long Beach Convention Center, is the best way to ensure the safety and wellbeing of dealers, eventgoers, and others who would have been involved with the show.

Additionally, Heritage Auctions had slated a multi-part sale of United States coins to be held in conjunction with the Long Beach Expo. For more information on that sale, including any changes to the schedule and location of that auction, please visit www.ha.com.

PCGS will be hosting a substitute Members Only Show in Las Vegas during the week of June 14, 2021. Heritage Auctions will also be moving their lot viewing to Vegas to overlap with the new event.

Those wanting to experience a collectibles show ambiance online have the option of visiting Collectors Corner (www.collectorscorner.com), a digital sales platform expected to see buying and trading activity by many of the dealers who had planned on attending the Long Beach Expo.

In the meantime, PCGS continues hosting special substitute Members Only Shows in the wake of major convention cancelations. These special Members-Only Shows provide collectors and dealers the opportunity to trade coins in a convention-like setting pursuant to all CDC, state, and local COVID-related safety protocols. Stay connected with the latest information on when and where the next PCGS Members Only Show will take place by visiting www.pcgs.com/shows.

We wish you all continued good health and safety.

PCGS Recognizes Excellence in Writing Achievements

(Santa Ana, California – March 18, 2021) – Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) has launched a new writing award program to honor its top in-house writing staff, the very experts who help deliver the latest information from the grading desks and across the numismatic scene.

The first individuals to be recognized as part of the inaugural initiative are PCGS World Coin Expert Jay Turner and PCGS Price Guide Editor Jaime Hernandez. Turner won the PCGS Numismatic Writer of the Year Award while Hernandez earns runner-up nods as PCGS Outstanding Writer.

“We wanted to recognize the incredible efforts our writing team flexes each and every day in providing top-quality, well-researched educational and informational content to the numismatic world,” remarks PCGS President Brett Charville. “Jay and Jaime are among a team of talented writers who each tirelessly share their numismatic knowledge and passion for their areas of the hobby with all dealers and hobbyists.”

“I can think of no better way to celebrate our writing team than to recognize two of our most prolific writers with these prestigious honors,” says PCGS Rare Coin Market Report Editor-in-Chief Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez. “While much of the work Jay and Jaime – as well as our other phenomenal writers – produce is showcased in the PCGS Rare Coin Market Report and on the PCGS Blog, there’s a ton of work they proudly contribute that often goes unbylined in PCGS CoinFacts and throughout many other PCGS resources.”

“When I joined the grading team at PCGS in 2017, my goal wasn’t simply to be a grader, but to also contribute to PCGS and the numismatic hobby at large,” comments Turner, who has been a coin collector since the age of 13 and joined PCGS in 2017. “In 2019, we sat in a meeting talking about what we as a company could do with the resources and knowledge at our disposal. Since then, PCGS has done many things toward this goal, including building a daily blog, social media promotions, and much more… It’s truly a team effort, and with the enthusiasm of the people at PCGS, the best is yet to come.”

Two of Turner’s favorite articles include “Hello Kitty and Her Coinage” (https://www.pcgs.com/news/hello-kitty-and-her-coinage) and “The Guatemala 8 Reales Hoard Reassembled” (https://www.pcgs.com/news/guatemala-8-reales-hoard-reassembled).

There is also an article he wrote about the discovery of a rare 1776 Continental Dollar in a French junk box (https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-paris-office-certifies-1776-continental-dollar) that was originally published in the January-February issue of PCGS Rare Coin Market Report; the story was later shared on the PCGS Blog, where it went viral on a variety of news media sites, including FOX News and Great Britain’s Daily Mail. Adds Turner, “When I get the opportunity to share a wonderful coin or a piece I graded and has a great story, it’s a true thrill. It is pieces like (the 1776 Continental Dollar) that hopefully help expand numismatics and grow the hobby.”

PNG President comments on ANA Dealer Day

Statement about ANA Dealer Day
by Richard Weaver
Professional Numismatists Guild President

As you may be aware, the current leadership at the American Numismatic Association declined to renew our contract for PNG Day this year for the first time in over 40 years. This was incredibly surprising, given that the Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) and its members have always supported the ANA and its endeavors, including giving up the PNG Day format to support ANA’s request for a PNG/ANA Trade Show to prevent competition to the World’s Fair of Money®.

The recent move by the ANA to host a “Dealer Day” was made without any prior discussion or consultation with PNG. Not only were we not given the opportunity to negotiate, we were not even afforded the common courtesy of an explanation.

We feel strongly that this is a slap in the face to PNG and its members.

We need to remind the ANA that dealers and collectors – including PNG dealers and their customers — are a large part of what makes ANA events successful. Remember, the public could attend the PNG Day events on the eve of the ANA summer conventions, but the public will not be permitted to attend the August 9 ANA Dealer Day.

Fortunately, we have the perfect venue for our members to preview and trade the best inventory prior to the ANA Dealer Day: the PNG50, to be held at the Hyatt Regency DFW Hotel in Dallas, Texas, July 28 – 29. Bourse tables have been reduced to a special introductory rate of $199.00 per dealer. Lunch will be served on the trading floor, and non-table holders can enter the show with a $50 donation to ACEF. NGC will have representatives on-site to accept submissions, and Heritage Auctions will have complimentary shuttles to and from their new, nearby DFW offices to facilitate lot viewing.

PNG has negotiated a special discounted room rate of $129 per night for single or double occupancy. The hotel also provides complimentary 24-hour airport shuttle service. Reservations can be made at hyatt.com/en-us/group-booking/dfwap/g-png1, or by phone at 877-803-7534 (ask for the PNG50 Group rate).

New applicants to the PNG will receive a bourse table free of charge, as long as their membership application is received prior to the show dates. For additional information, or to download the bourse application, visit the PNG website, www.PNGdealers.org.

Diamond Anniversary 75th-Edition RED BOOK Will Be Available in Four Formats

(Pelham, AL) — The Diamond Anniversary 75th edition of the Guide Book of United States Coins (the hobby’s popular “Red Book”) will debut in four distinct formats on April 6, 2021. Each version features the same content, with 32,000 retail prices in multiple grades, historical information, 2,000 high-resolution full-color photographs, and guidance on collecting every type of American coin.

The convenient spiralbound softcover format was designed to lie flat when open on a desk or table. It measures 7.7″ by 6″ and is bound with a durable metal coil. “This is the most popular modern format of the Red Book,” said Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker. “The first spiralbound-softcover Red Book debuted in 1997, with the 50th edition. It was next available in 1999, and we’ve offered the format every year since then. Collectors like it because you can set your coins out in front of you, and have your Red Book lying flat, open to whatever page you want to study.”

The spiralbound hardcover has the convenience of a coil binding with the durability of a board cover. It measures 8.2″ by 6″ and, like the spiralbound softcover, opens to lie flat for reading alongside a coin collection. This format was first issued in 2008, with the 61st edition, and has been available (alongside other formats) for every edition since. “The spiralbound hardcover is the Red Book I keep on my desk for day-to-day use,” said Senior Editor Jeff Garrett.

The classic red hardcover Red Book measures 7.7″ by 5.5″. The Diamond Anniversary edition features silver-foil title imprinting, instead of the usual gold-foil. Its back cover bears a silver-foil “75 Years” emblem. “The red hardcover is what many longtime collectors envision when they think of the Red Book,” said Editor Emeritus Kenneth Bressett. “In fact, hobbyists have considered the hardcover to be a collectible itself since at least the 1960s, when it started becoming popular to seek one of every edition.”

The newest format of the Red Book, the Large Print Edition, has been offered annually since the 63rd edition, published in 2010. This oversized version measures 11″ by 9.25″ and, in addition to being 45% larger in page size, features easy-to-read large-size print, and enlarged color photos. “The Large Print Edition has all the same content and information as the regular formats,” said Research Editor Q. David Bowers. “The coin values, the photographs, the mintage data and specifications, are all here.” The Large Print Edition is also spiralbound for ease of use.

All versions and formats of the 75th-edition Red Book can be pre-ordered online (including at Whitman.com), and after April 6 will be available from booksellers and hobby shops nationwide.
