Introduced in 2018, the American Innovation® $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series featuring distinctive reverse (tails) designs that pay homage to America’s ingenuity and celebrate the pioneering efforts of individuals or groups from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories.
The Rhode Island American Innovation $1 Coin recognizes naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff’s famous Reliance yacht, which incorporated numerous technical innovations when it was built in 1891. The coin’s reverse design depicts the famous Reliance yacht at full speed in the waters surrounding Rhode Island. The design is bordered by a rope evoking the nautical scene. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “RHODE ISLAND.” The design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Dennis Friel and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
The obverse (heads) of all coins in this series features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. AIP Designer Justin Kunz created the design, which was sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
Incused on the coin’s edge are “2022,” the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

Plans include creating new coin designs, 4th edition of award-winning American Silver Eagles book, and NGC autographs
(Austin, Texas) February 15, 2022 — Prominent professional numismatist Michael “Miles” Standish has announced that the fourth edition will soon be released of the award-winning reference book he co-authored with former United States Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, “American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program.”
“First struck in 1986, the American Silver Eagles have become the most popular bullion coins in the history of the United States. The new edition of the book will include more information about these important coins as well as many additional illustrations since the last edition was published in 2016,” explained Standish. “The fourth edition is expected to be released in mid-March by Whitman Publishing.”
A portion of the book’s profits will be donated to the Standish Foundation for Children (https://standishfoundation.org) in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2010 by Standish’s wife, Andy Mangione Standish, a Certified Child Life Specialist, the Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works with healthcare providers in the United States and other countries to provide tools and training to minimize healthcare-related pain and suffering in children.
Exclusive autographed copies of the updated “American Silver Eagles” books, hand-signed by the authors Standish and Mercanti, will be available for $50 each including shipping. For additional information, contact Standish by email at MJStandish@aol.com.
Standish also announced he has signed a new consulting and exclusive coin design agreement with 7k Metals (https://7kmetals.com/home), a precious metals company based in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He previously created concepts for several best-selling 7k Metals silver legal tender numismatic coins including designs honoring the Statue of Liberty and the White House.
He also has signed an agreement with Numismatic Guaranty Company (www.NGCcoin.com) to be included in NGC’s Signature Labels program that features encapsulation insert labels hand-signed by famous hobby figures. Standish was an executive of NGC from 2015 to December 2021.
While working at NGC, Standish spearheaded and expanded the popular concept of autographs on encapsulation inserts with artists, engravers, former Mint Directors, celebrities, and star athletes signing inserts for certified coins and trading cards.
He previously was an authenticator and grader at the former American Numismatic Association Certification Service and served as an executive at Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com), and Professional Sports Authenticator (www.PSAcard.com).
A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Standish began buying and selling coins at the age of 17 while still in high school. In 2019, he established a $250,000 trust fund to benefit education and sports programs at Portage Central High School in Michigan where he played varsity football and graduated in 1983. He also donated an eight-foot bronze statue of a mustang horse, a symbol of the school’s mascot name, the Mighty Mustangs.

On September 3, 1857, the SS Central America began a voyage from Panama to New York carrying very important cargo: thousands of freshly minted gold coins from California, desperately needed by New York banks that were facing an economic crisis. Six days later, the ship found itself in the grips of a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. After three days of struggling with high winds and waves, the ship’s crew lost its battle with the storm and the Central America sank, resulting in the loss of more than 400 lives and more than 9 tons of gold.
For more than 130 years, treasure hunters dreamed of discovering the wreck of the SS Central America, which quickly became known as the “Ship of Gold.” When the wreck was finally discovered in the late 1980s, the process of retrieving its treasure began.
NGC is thrilled to reveal to the public the final mystery of the ship’s recovered cargo — a box containing $20 gold coins from the height of the California Gold Rush, now certified, preserved and ready to be studied and appreciated by collectors around the world. Click below to watch a video showing the treasure’s journey to the NGC grading room, view a gallery of all 123 coins that were found and learn more about the incredible discovery, finally revealed.

Feb 7, 2022 | Announcements, U.S. Mint
WASHINGTON – On February 7, at noon EST, the United States Mint (Mint) will begin accepting orders for products featuring the first coin in the American Women Quarters Program. The coin honors writer, poet, performer, social activist, and teacher Maya Angelou.
Angelou rose to international prominence as an author after the publication of her groundbreaking autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” Angelou’s published works of verse, non-fiction, and fiction include more than 30 bestselling titles. Her remarkable career encompasses dance, theater, journalism, and social activism. The recipient of more than 30 honorary degrees, Angelou read “On the Pulse of Morning” at the 1992 inauguration of President Bill Clinton. Angelou’s reading marked the first time an African American woman wrote and presented a poem at a Presidential inauguration. In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded Angelou the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was the 2013 recipient of the Literarian Award, an honorary National Book Award for contributions to the literary community.
The coin’s reverse (tails) design depicts Maya Angelou with her arms uplifted. Behind her are a bird in flight and a rising sun, images inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Emily Damstra and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Craig A. Campbell. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MAYA ANGELOU,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to mark George Washington’s 200th birthday. A recommended design for the 1932 quarter, then-Treasury Secretary Mellon ultimately selected the familiar John Flannigan design. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2022.” The obverse design is common to all quarters issued in the series.

Feb 7, 2022 | Announcements, Royal Mint
The Royal Mint today (Monday 7th February) released the latest coin to be remastered as part of their Great Engravers series; the obverse of the iconic Gothic Crown by renowned engraver William Wyon. This coin features the Gothic Crown portrait of Queen Victoria combined with the portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark on the reverse. The coin will still be dated 2021 in recognition of the earlier release, giving collectors a second chance to own the sought-after collectible, again combined with the current portrait of the Queen. As the coin bears a 2021 date, it also went to the Trial of the Pyx last week.
The original coin featured a cruciform arrangement of the Royal Arms in a Gothic style on the reverse (tails side) and the portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse (heads side). The Royal Mint split the obverse and reverse designs to create two commemorative coins to add to collections.

Five extremely limited, graded presentation sets containing an original coin and both the new commemorative versions in 2oz gold, will also be created. Four go on sale today via telephone sales only, offering collectors the chance to own all three coins. One additional set be reserved for the Tokyo International Coin Convention where The Royal Mint, in partnership with Taisei Coins, will be holding an auction in April this year.
The Royal Mint launched their Great Engravers range in 2019 with Una and the Lion, followed by the Three Graces, both designed by William Wyon, originally produced in 1839 and 1817 respectively. Both are well known as being incredibly beautiful and intricate designs, and the Royal Mint’s Chief engraver Gordon Summers, together with his team, have revived the designs with state-of-the-art technology. The tooling for the modern coins has been taken directly from the original tools worked on by Wyon in the 1800s, remastered by The Royal Mint’s expert team, over 150 years after the original was created.
Introduced in 1847 on the silver crown, the Gothic Crown was created by William Wyon, former Chief Engraver at The Royal Mint. Queen Victoria’s portrait was portrayed in a medieval style, representing the fanciful splendour of the era. Only 8,000 were initially minted at the time alongside a very small quantity of gold.
The Great Engravers Gothic Crown will be available in five sizes in both Gold and Silver: 2kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz and 2oz. There will also be two 5kg struck in Gold and one 10kg.
