Developing a Passion for Liberty Seated Coinage
Instructors: John Frost, Craig Eberhart and Len Augsburger
Session 1: June 15-20
Presented by leading experts in the field, this in-depth examination of Liberty Seated coinage will explore historical perspectives, key dates, collecting strategies, major varieties, grading, counterfeits and authentication. What’s Essential
Creating a Winning Numismatic Exhibit
Instructor: Lawrence Sekulich
Session 1: June 15-20
One of the most rewarding aspects of coin collecting is sharing knowledge with others through a numismatic exhibit. Students will go through the entire process of creating their own display, from brainstorming ideas, writing text and selecting appropriate materials to designing a balanced layout and pulling it all together. Also included will be tips for packing an exhibit for transportation, and exhibit rules and judging. Participants are encouraged to improve an already existing display or create a new one before attending this course.
What’s Popular
The Wonderful World of Paper Money
Instructor: Joseph E. Boling
Session 2: June 22-27
Paper money has existed for centuries, and not only for economic purposes. Just as the Romans used coinage to publicize Imperial accomplishments, paper currency has been printed to celebrate a nation’s history, people and conquests. Take a tour covering 600-plus years of paper money, how it is produced and what it represents, as well as its artistry and future. (Soon it might not be “paper” money any longer!) Included are many hours of handling notes. Pick the countries or periods that interest you and enjoy!
What’s Original
Ducats to Dollars:Trade Coins from the End of the Middle Ages until the 20th Century
Instructor: Ian Fenn
Session 2: June 22-27
Students will study the evolution of world coins from the 13th century through the middle of the 20th century, with a focus on the coins used in international trade, starting with the gold florin, the Venetian ducat and descendants like the Netherlands ducat and gulden. Participants will discover how the dollar evolved from its 15th-century Tyrolean ancestor, and follow the development and demise of Trade dollars from Spanish cobs to the demonetization of the Maria Theresa thaler in 1971.
Lodging
Students may select from a variety of lodging options to meet their needs, preferences and budget. Most stay in Colorado College campus dorms (adjacent to the ANA), while others elect to stay in nearby hotels. For a complete list of ANA preferred hotels, refer to page 22 of the Summer Seminar Course Catalog.
Travel
Summer Seminar attendees are encouraged to contact M&M World Travel Service for travel arrangements. M&M works closely with the ANA to provide competitive airline rates and personalized service. Students can take advantage of the ANA’s complimentary shuttle by flying into the Colorado Springs Airport. To make M&M travel arrangements, call 800-426-8326 or email pwhitnah@mmworldtravel.com.

Mar 19, 2019 | Announcements, U.S. Mint
WASHINGTON – The United States Mint is pleased to announce a call for artists to design the obverse (heads side) of commemorative coins celebrating the game of basketball. Public Law 115-343 authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue domed $5 gold coins, domed $1 silver coins, and domed half-dollar clad coins, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is dedicated to the creator of the game, Dr. James Naismith. It is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game was first played. The organization is recognized on a global scale as the institution that records and shares the history of basketball, including its greatest players, coaches, and contributors.
In accordance with the public law, the gold, clad, and silver coins will all share the same obverse (front) and reverse (back) designs. The design for the common obverse of these commemorative coins will be selected by the Secretary of the Treasury based on the winning design from a public design competition. The obverse design is required to be emblematic of the game of basketball. The winning artist will receive $5,000 and have his or her initials included on the coins. Competition details and entry can be accessed on the United States Mint’s website.
Program legislation requires that the common reverse design depict a basketball. The reverse design will be developed by the United States Mint and is not part of this competition.
“From pick-up games to professional athletes, basketball touches so many of us,” said United States Mint Director David Ryder. “The United States Mint will be proud to produce coins honoring a game that brings people together.”
The public competition has two phases. Phase One, which is open today through April 15, 2019, calls for artists age 18 and older to submit a digital portfolio, consisting of three to five examples of their existing work. Following a review of Phase One applications by an expert panel, up to 25 entries will be selected to participate in Phase Two. During Phase Two, artists will be paid a stipend of $1,000 to submit a two-dimensional digital design for the common obverse of the coin. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) will review the designs at their public committee meetings. After considering input from the subject matter experts at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and recommendations from the CCAC and the CFA, the Secretary of the Treasury will select one artist’s design to serve as the basis for the obverse of the coins. The same design will be used on the gold, silver, and clad coins. The final winner will be announced later this year.
Upon selection of the winning design, the United States Mint will begin production of curved gold, silver, and clad commemorative coins for issue in 2020. Surcharges for this program are authorized to be paid to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to fund an endowment that will enable increased operations and educational programming.

Earlier this year, the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) announced the creation of the Newman Grant program to financially assist numismatic authors and organizations pursuing original research in American numismatics. Newman Grants will be awarded annually with the first set of awards announced in May 2019.
EPNNES has previously supported the numismatic community through the creation of the Newman Numismatic Portal (NewmanPortal.org) at Washington University in St. Louis, and, prior to that, the Newman Money Museum. In addition, EPNNES has supported the American Numismatic Society (ANS) Graduate Seminar and the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Summer Seminar through a matching program in conjunction with ANA Young Numismatist (YN) annual auction. EPNNES also provided direct assistance to numerous numismatic clubs and societies in November 2017.
EPNNES now widens its numismatic support to the larger community and invites Newman Grant applications from the public. Authors, researchers, and numismatic organizations are encouraged to apply for amounts between $1,000 and $5,000. Applications promoting original research in American numismatics will be preferred. Awards may be applied toward any related expense including but not limited to photography, reproduction services, travel, or publication. EPNNES intends to make approximately half a dozen grants per year.
The Newman Grant program will be administered for EPNNES by the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP). Applications may be found on the Newman Numismatic Portal at https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/archivedetail/530553 and should be submitted to NNPCurator@wustl.edu. The application deadline is April 1, 2019, with the first set of Newman Grants to be announced on May 25, 2019, coincident with the late Eric P. Newman’s birthday.
It is the hope of EPNNES that this program will continue the legacy of Eric P. Newman in a way that would reflect his high standards for numismatic research.

Spectacular Exhibits
Museum Showcase features rare and historic items from the ANA’s Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., and includes:
- The 1804 Draped Bust U.S. Silver Dollar: The “King of U.S. Coins” is one of only 15 known examples and is insured for $4 million.
- The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel: One of five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels made under mysterious circumstances at the Philadelphia Mint.
- Bebee Error Notes: Rarely seen specimens from the famous Bebee collection of paper currency and uncut notes.
- A 1933 $10 Eagle: In March 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt halted the release of gold coins from the Mint to help reverse the tide of the Depression. This act created noteworthy gold coin rarities, including the spectacular 1933 eagle.
- The 1943/44 Cent Case: In 1943, to save copper for World War II, the U.S. Mint produced Lincoln cents using steel instead of the normal bronze alloy. A few 1943 Lincoln cents were mistakenly made from left over 1942 bronze blanks instead of the zinc-coated steel creating an instant sensation. The same accident occurred in 1944 when the Mint returned to bronze cents – a few of the steel cent blanks were struck as 1944 cents. On display courtesy of the Dazzling Rarities Collection.

Described as “most beautifully toned gold coin ever seen.”
(Lincroft, New Jersey) March 6, 2019 – The spectacular 1857-S Double Eagle, recovered in 2014 from the fabled S.S. Central America and now nicknamed “Supernova” because of its amazing, unique natural toning, will be offered to the public for the first time through Legend Rare Coin Auctions (www.LegendAuctions.com).

(Photo courtesy of Professional Coin Grading Service, www.PCGS.com.)
“I was beyond thrilled when the coin was consigned to Legend Auctions. When it arrived, the magnificent colors were so overwhelming tbest-tonedds started shaking holding the coin! This is by far the best toned gold piece I have ever seen,” stated Legend Auctions President Laura Sperber.
Graded PCGS MS67, the coin displays a mixture of vibrant red and deep blue hues over much of its lustrous gold obverse surface as well as remarkable blue and red toning on the reverse.
It will be displayed at the upcoming PCGS Members Only Show at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, March 20-22, and then offered by Legend in their Regency 32 auction at the PCGS show in New Orleans on May 16.
“It is the most beautifully toned gold coin ever seen! It has amazing blasts of colors, so we named it ‘Supernova’ after something truly cosmic,” explained Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group (CGMG) which consigned the coin to Legend.
“This 1857-S $20 has been talked about more than any of the other S.S. Central America coins,” said Manley. “I chose Legend to auction the ‘Supernova’ because of their unequalled success in auctioning beautifully toned coins. They’ve become the number one dealer for these unique wonders.”
CGMG acquired it and other sunken treasure brought up in 2014 from Ira Owen Kane, Receiver for Recovery Limited Partnership and Columbus Exploration, LLC in a court-approved transaction. CGMG earlier acquired all of the available treasure that was recovered in the late 1980s.
Known as the “Ship of Gold,” the S.S. Central America sank in a hurricane in September 1857 off the coast of North Carolina while carrying tons of California Gold Rush coins and gold ingots. There were 578 passengers and crew onboard, but only 153 survived.
The “Supernova” Double Eagle and all the other S.S. Central America coins recovered over the decades have been authenticated and certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com).
“PCGS was tremendously honored to examine and grade this particular coin MS67. Like the cherished ‘Heart of the Ocean’ diamond in the famed movie, Titanic, this coin represents the crown jewel of the S.S. Central America treasures,” stated PCGS President Brett Charville.
The coin was discovered more than 7,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in the commercial shipment area near the stern of the shipwreck. It was among piles and stacks of coins that originally were in boxes of Double Eagles being shipped to New York by San Francisco businesses.
For additional information about the coin, contact Legend Rare Coin Auctions at 732-935-1168 or by email at info@LegendAuctions.com.
