United States Mint Set to Release Presidential Medals Struck in Silver on August 16

WASHINGTON – The United States Mint (Mint) will begin accepting orders for the George Washington Presidential Silver Medal (product code S801) and the John Adams Presidential Silver Medal (product code S802) on August 16 at noon Eastern Time (ET). Both medals are priced at $39.95 each.

The obverse (heads) of the George Washington Presidential Silver Medal features his portrait as designed by Pierre Simon Duvivier. The inscriptions “GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” and “1789” are centered along the border of the medal.

The obverse of the John Adams Presidential Silver Medal features his portrait as designed by Moritz Furst. The inscriptions “JOHN ADAMS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” and “A.D. 1797” are alongside the border of the medal.

The reverse (tails) design of both medals is by John Reich. The design features the inscription “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP,” symbolized by two hands clasped in token of amity. On the cuff of the left wrist are three stripes with buttons, each button carrying the American eagle; the other wrist is bare. Above the hands, the pipe of peace and the tomahawk are crossed over each other.

Each encapsulated Presidential Silver Medal arrives packaged in a clamshell case with a standardized Presidential Silver Medal Certificate of Authenticity.

The Mint is introducing the Presidential Silver Medals Program under the authority of Title 31 U.S.C. § 5111(a)(2), which allows the Secretary of the Treasury to “prepare national medal dies and strike national and other medals if it does not interfere with regular minting operations.”

The Department of the Treasury has a long-standing tradition of honoring each President of the United States with an official bronze medal struck by the Mint. The Mint is now replicating these medals in .999 percent fine silver.

After the initial release of the Washington and Adams Presidential Silver Medals in 2018, the Mint will issue four Presidential Silver Medals each year (one each quarter) beginning in 2019 in the order that the Presidents served. The medals will have a matte finish similar to an uncirculated coin. (Note: The term “uncirculated” is exclusive to coins.) The medals may be produced across multiple production facilities and will not have a mint mark.

The Mint accepts orders at catalog.usmint.gov/ and 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order at 1-888-321-MINT. Information about shipping options is available at catalog.usmint.gov/customer-service/shipping.html.

New $1 Coin Program Honors American Innovation

The enactment of the American Innovation $1 Coin Act (Act) ushers in the latest numismatic coin program of the United States Mint (Mint). The Act calls for the minting and issuance of non-circulating American Innovation $1 coins for each state, the District of Columbia, and each U.S. territory in the order each State ratified the Constitution of the United States or were admitted into the Union. The program’s duration is a 14-year period that begins January 1, 2019.

The Act also authorizes a 2018 introductory coin which will be minted and issued in the latter part of this calendar year. The introductory coin will bear an obverse common to all coins in the program. It will consist of a likeness of the Statue of Liberty, and the inscriptions of “$1” and “In God We Trust.” The reverse of the introductory coin will be inscribed with “United States of America” and “American Innovators,” and it will include a representation of President George Washington’s signature on the first U.S. patent. The inscription of the year of minting or issuance, mint mark, and “E Pluribus Unum” will be edge-incused into all coins.

American Innovation $1 coins issued for 2019-2033 will bear a reverse image or images emblematic of a significant innovation, an innovator, or a group of innovators from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of the United States. According to the legislation, the Secretary of the Treasury will select the designs after consultation with each Governor or other chief executive and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts; and review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

After the introductory coin’s release in 2018, the Mint will issue the remaining American Innovation $1 coins at a rate of four per year until the end of the program in 2033.

United States Mint Launches America the Beautiful Quarters® Program Coin Honoring Voyageurs National Park Quarter

International Falls, MN – The United States Mint (Mint) joined the National Park Service today to launch the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program coin honoring Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota. It is the third America the Beautiful Quarters coin issued in 2018 and the 43rd release in the series.

This latest quarter’s reverse (tails) design depicts a common loon with a rock cliff in the background. Inscriptions are “VOYAGEURS,” “MINNESOTA,” “2018,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The obverse (heads) design depicts the 1932 restored portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.” A digital image of the quarter is available here

In his remarks during the launch, Mint Director David J. Ryder said, “Just as the loon’s yodels and wails are a distinctive and timeless sound of Northern Minnesota’s wilderness and waterways, the Voyageurs quarter will echo the histories and cultures of the people who have been connected here through trade, industry, and recreation.”

Retired ornithology professor Leland Grim led a festive ceremony that featured musical performances by International Falls natives Gavia Yount and Darcy Sullivan. Boy Scouts of America Troop 150; Cub Scout Troop 145; Girl Scouts of America Troops 1150, 1151, 1153, and 1156; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard 2948 also participated in the ceremony. Guest speakers were Ida Rukavina, Regional Outreach Director for U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar; Peter Makowski, Regional Outreach Director for U.S. Senator Tina Smith; Tom Whiteside, who represented U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan; and Park Superintendent Bob DeGross.

“The beauty and recreational opportunities of Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota make it a fantastic year-round destination for sightseeing, fishing, boating, and hiking,” said Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke. “The park’s interconnected lakes, maze of water ways, 2.7 billion year-old exposed geological layers, campsites, and trails are examples of the many treasures and experiences available on America’s vast network of public lands.”

The Mint bookended the coin launch with its customary public coin forum on the eve of the launch ceremony and a currency exchange for $10 rolls of Voyageurs National Park quarters the following day. Products containing the new quarter are available for purchase via the Mint’s online catalog.

Public Law 110-456 authorized the 2009 launch of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 12-year initiative that honors 56 national parks and other national sites. Each year until 2020, the public will see five different national sites depicted on the reverses of the America the Beautiful Quarters coins, with a final coin scheduled for release in 2021. The Mint is issuing these quarters according to the date each location was designated a national site.
