New Chief Financial Officers Joins American Numismatic Association
Controller Carol Hull Retiring After 17 Years of Services
The American Numismatic Association (ANA) welcomed Brent W. Howe as its new chief financial officer (CFO) on August 5. Howe has a deep background in financial management and administration, with broad experience in the education, health care, manufacturing and defense sectors.
Howe most recently worked with General Dynamic Mission Systems’ GPS Source segment as its CFO and director of operations. He also has served in similar capacities for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and New Mexico State University (NMSU). Howe has an MBA from the Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University, and a BA in Accounting from Brigham Young University. He is a licensed certified public accountant (CPA) and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
In this newly-defined position, Howe will be responsible for the Association’s long-term business and financial planning, in addition to managing financial forecasting and budget analysis. “I’m thrilled to be working with such a distinguished organization as the ANA,” says Howe. “It has exceptional employees and an engaged board, which are key to an organization’s success.”
“Brent was among a handful of candidates we were considering for the new CFO position,” says ANA Executive Director Kim Kiick. “His expertise in financial analysis, forecasting and cash flow management, plus his nonprofit experience will benefit the Association greatly. We’re excited to have him join the ANA team.”
Howe replaces ANA Controller Carol Hull, who is retiring from the Association on August 28 after nearly 18 years. “Although we will certainly miss Carol in the office, I’m pleased to know that her dedicated service and institutional knowledge will remain part of our community for years to come in her new role as a national volunteer,” says Kiick.
The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its 28,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of educational and outreach programs as well as its museum, library, publications, and conventions. Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo Forced to Cancel November 2020 Bourse at Baltimore Convention Center
“Save the Date” Issued for Alternate Venue
(Baltimore, Maryland)—The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo scheduled for November 12–14, 2020, has been forced to move from the Baltimore Convention Center by Maryland’s ongoing mitigation of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Maryland’s COVID-19 mitigation strategies include restricting public access to state buildings, including the Baltimore Convention Center, and controlling the size of public events.
Although the Expo has been forced to move from Maryland and the Baltimore Convention Center, it will still take place, at a venue to be announced. Whitman Expo manager Lori Kraft has issued a “Save the Date” to the hobby community. “We’re working on an alternate show venue,” Kraft said. “Collectors and dealers can count on an Expo event being held November 12–14, 2020. We’ll make an announcement soon with more details.”
Management and staff of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo express their concern for everyone affected by COVID-19. “We’re so thankful for the medical workers who continue to provide front-line care, and for everyone staying safe and looking out for their families and neighbors,” said Kraft.
The new location and a complete schedule of November Whitman Expo activities will be publicized as soon as the venue is confirmed. Updates and news will be posted at expo.whitman.com. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is monitoring the situation and will provide details of its still scheduled November 2020 Auction on their web site, www.stacksbowers.com, as soon as complete details are available.

(Santa Ana, California – August 14, 2020) – Coin designer Justin Kunz is autographing Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) labels being paired with 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame commemorative coins. Kunz designed the common obverse of the 2020 commemorative coins honoring the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. The 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame commemorative coins include a clad half dollar, silver dollar, and gold $5 coin.
These special PCGS labels are part of a larger, exclusive partnership PCGS has as the official coin authenticator and grader for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
“PCGS is excited to have Kunz onboard signing labels for the Basketball Hall of Fame coins, as this renowned artist is one of the premier coin designers of our time,” remarked PCGS President Brett Charville.
“Kunz is one of the most pivotal and important designers currently serving the United States Mint. Getting to know him this past year has been a genuine pleasure. The opportunity to pair his autograph with the Basketball Hall of Fame coins – themselves unique collectibles with their curved planchets and outstanding designs – is truly a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” stated Charville.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame PCGS labels signed by Justin Kunz are being paired with the following coins:
- 2020 Proof & Uncirculated Basketball Hall of Fame Clad Half Dollar
- 2020 Proof & Uncirculated Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Dollar
- 2020 Proof & Uncirculated Basketball Hall of Fame Gold $5 Coin
Kunz, a professor at the University of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, has a varied artistic background that, in addition to numismatics, includes credits with Disney, LEGO, and Upper Deck. His journey in numismatic arts began in 2003 when he joined the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) at the age of 29.
His artistic portfolio of United States Mint circulating and commemorative United States coins is diverse. Among his many credits are the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Dollar obverse, 2015 High-Relief Gold Coin and Silver Medal obverses, 2017 American Liberty High-Relief 24-Karat Gold Coin and Silver Medal obverses, the obverse of every American Innovation $1 Coin to be issued from 2018 through 2032, and the reverse of the 2020 America The Beautiful Quarters Weir Farm National Historic Site issue also featuring the first-ever V75 Privy Mark. Furthermore, Kunz has designed many other circulating and non-circulating United States coins and medals and is among today’s foremost numismatic artists.
Kunz says he is thrilled for the opportunity to sign labels for PCGS. “Signing PCGS labels for Basketball Hall of Fame coins represents a cool nexus point of sports, coins, and other collectibles.” The husband and father of four also remarked that he had a little help in designing the obverse of the Basketball Hall of Fame coins. “My 15-year-old son, Caleb, loves basketball, and I actually consulted with him on the design a bit – he should definitely get some of the credit.”
Collectors who submit their Basketball Hall of Fame coins to PCGS for encapsulation will also receive a limited-edition orange PCGS storage box. “This stunning coin pays homage to the many pioneers, activists, and foot soldiers who fought bravely and tenaciously for decades to make this Constitutional amendment a reality,” said United States Mint Director David J. Ryder.
According to United States Senator Marsha Blackburn (TN), sponsor of the Senate version of the authorizing legislation, “the 2020 centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment is a rare moment to celebrate the milestone that made it possible for women to finally have a voice in government. Ninety-nine years after women gained the right to vote, I became the first woman from Tennessee to serve in the United States Senate. This commemorative coin serves as an important reminder of the history that led us to where we are today. I am honored to have worked with Senator Gillibrand and Representatives Stefanik and Lawrence to commemorate the pioneers and trailblazers who made it possible for us to be members of these chambers.”
Representative Elise Stefanik (NY-21), sponsor of the House version of the authorizing legislation, said, “I am honored to celebrate the important work of women’s suffrage activists through the Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Coin. One of the most vocal advocates for women’s suffrage, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was born and raised in Johnstown, New York, and I am looking forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment in my district this year. I thank my colleagues Senators Gillibrand and Blackburn and Representative Lawrence, who I worked with in a bipartisan fashion to advance this legislation and create this coin in order to commemorate the important work of women suffragists in their fight for equality.”
The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Proof Silver Dollar and Medal Set features a 99 percent silver medal with its own unique designs, which will be available only as part of this set. Mintage for this set is limited to 10,000 units, with orders limited to one per household for the first 24 hours of sales. The Mint will release a bronze version of the medal in 2021.
The obverse (heads) of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Silver Dollar features overlapping profiles of three distinct women. Each woman is wearing a different type of hat to symbolize the many decades the suffrage movement spanned. The figure in the foreground is wearing a cloche hat with an art deco pattern and a button with the year of the 19th Amendment’s ratification. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “$1,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” encircle the design.
The coin’s reverse (tails) shows “2020” being dropped into a ballot box, styled with art deco elements to indicate the artistic style of the era. “VOTES FOR WOMEN” is inscribed inside a circle on the front of the box. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are on the ballot box.
The obverse of the medal features a child’s reaching hand, amid adult women’s hands and arms holding up a heavy weight—a kind of “foundation” of stone. Women’s suffrage was a struggle that continued across generations, with countless hands turned to the task. “WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL” is inscribed.
The medal’s reverse honors the Women’s Suffrage Movement by juxtaposing the text of the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, with the flag of the United States. “1920” is inscribed.
Both the silver dollar and the medal were produced at the United States Mint at Philadelphia. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with each product option.
The Mint is currently accepting orders only at catalog.usmint.gov/. Information about shipping options is available at catalog.usmint.gov/customer-service/shipping.html. To reduce the risk of employee exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace, the Mint’s sales centers are closed until further notice. Click here for details.
Public Law 116-71 authorizes the Mint to produce up to 400,000 silver $1 coins across all product options. A $10 surcharge collected from the sale of each coin is authorized to be paid to the Smithsonian Institution’s American Women’s History Initiative for research and creation of exhibits and programs to highlight the history and impact of women in the United States.
Note: To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, the United States Mint will not accept and will not honor orders placed prior to the official on-sale date and time of August 18, 2020, at noon EDT.
