2020 United States Mint Annual Set of Uncirculated Coins Goes on Sale on November 30
Premium nickel from the West Point Mint will not be included
WASHINGTON–The 2020 United States Mint (Mint) Uncirculated Coin Set® (product code 20RJ) will be available for purchase starting on November 30, at noon (EDT). The set is priced at $25.25. This is the final annual set to be released this year. Due to the effects of COVID-19 at the Mint’s manufacturing facilities, this set has a limited production quantity of 213,000. In addition, we are not able to include the premium West Point nickel with an uncirculated finish as previously planned. This change was necessary to free up manufacturing resources for other legislatively-mandated products that will be released for sale in 2020.
The 2020 Uncirculated Set contains two folders with 10 coins each—one with coins from the United States Mint at Philadelphia and the other with coins from the United States Mint at Denver. Each folder has the following uncirculated finish coins:
- Five America the Beautiful Quarters® Program coins honoring the National Park of American Samoa, Weir Farm National Historic Site (Connecticut), Salt River Bay National Historic Forest Ecological Preserve (U.S. Virgin Islands), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park (Vermont), and Tall Grass National Prairie (Kansas).
- One Native American $1 Coin with a reverse design depicting Elizabeth Peratrovich, whose advocacy was considered a deciding factor in the passage of the 1945 Anti-Discrimination Law in the Alaskan Territorial Government. The foreground features a symbol of the Tlingit Raven moiety, of which she was a member. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” along the top border, “ELIZABETH PERATROVICH” across from the portrait, and “ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW OF 1945” and “$1” along the bottom border. The obverse design (heads) retains the central figure Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
- One Kennedy half dollar
- One Roosevelt dime
- One Jefferson nickel
- One Lincoln penny
The Mint strikes its uncirculated coins on dedicated presses that use greater force than those used to produce circulating coins. This technique results in a sharp, intricately detailed image. A blister secures the coins in a folder.

Burnett Anderson Memorial Award and Booster Awards Presented by American Numismatic Association During Virtual Event
The Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing is presented annually to a researcher, author or journalist in recognition of his or her body of work and career contributions to numismatics. First conferred posthumously to its namesake in 1999 at the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) 108th Anniversary Convention, the award is intended to recognize quality and integrity in numismatic wordsmithing of every kind.
This year’s recipient is Oliver Hoover, who has been a prolific researcher and numismatic author for nearly two decades. Hoover accepted the honor during the ANA’s virtual awards ceremony held September 1.
Initially hired as an assistant curator at the American Numismatic Society (ANS), Hoover now serves as an ANS adjunct curator and editor. His 58 articles and chapters, published in a variety of scholarly and mainstream journals, address a broad range of topics, from ancient Greek coinage and U.S. colonial specimens to Federal period coinage, tokens and medals. He is perhaps best known as the author of the indispensable Handbook of Greek Coinage Series, published by the Classical Numismatic Group, Inc.
To date, Hoover has published 12 volumes comprising extensive information about ancient Greek coinage from the Archaic through the Hellenistic periods. In addition to authoring several exhibition catalogs, he notably co-wrote Seleucid Coins: A Comprehensive Catalogue with Arthur Houghton and Catharine Lorber.
Hoover has served as editor of numerous periodicals over the years, including the Colonial Newsletter (now The Journal of Early American Numismatics), and as managing editor of the American Journal of Numismatics.
Expanding Association Reach
During the Association’s virtual awards ceremony on September 1, hobby supporters were honored for encouraging coin enthusiasts to join the ANA. The recruitment period was Nov. 1, 2018, to Oct. 1, 2019. The John and Nancy Wilson Member Booster Award (named after the duo who has recruited more than 2,000 new members for the Association) went to Sandy Hill. The Colorado Springs resident signed up 18 new members.
Numismatic professionals who have sponsored members through their business activities are recognized with the Dealer Booster Award. This year’s recipient is Whitman Publishing of Atlanta, Georgia. Owned by Anderson Press, the company signed up 173 members.
The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its 28,000-plus members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of educational and outreach programs as well as its museum, library, publications, and conventions. United States Mint Announces Mayflower 400th Anniversary Program Products
WASHINGTON–The United States Mint (Mint) today announced the Mayflower 400th Anniversary products it will offer, including some in collaboration with The Royal Mint (UK). The products are expected to be available later this fall.
The coin and medal designs come together to tell the story of the Mayflower’s historic voyage, the Pilgrims, and the impact the Pilgrims’ arrival had on the native Wampanoag people.
The four products in the United States Mint’s product portfolio include:
Two joint sets product options:
- A limited edition two-coin gold proof set, featuring a one-quarter ounce proof £25 coin from The Royal Mint, and one-quarter ounce proof $10 coin from the United States Mint (20XA).
- A limited edition silver set featuring a one ounce £2 silver coin from The Royal Mint (UK) and a silver medal from the United States Mint (20XB), both struck in proof finish in .999 fine silver.
Two single product options:
- The individual United States Mint gold coin (20XC) struck in a reverse proof finish.
- The individual United States Mint silver medal (20XD) struck in a reverse proof finish.
Limits on each of these product options will be available on the product pages this fall.
The United States Mint coins and medals, and the reverse of the UK coins, were all designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program designer Chris Costello, who used multiple stylistic elements to tie the series together. These include the choice of font and North Star on the U.K. coin, which connects to the image of the sun in the U.S. coin, symbolizing a new day. That symbolism is also a reference to the Wampanoag people who inhabited the region, and were known as the “People of the Dawn.”
The U.S $10 Gold Coin obverse depicts a Wampanoag family watching from the border of the design as the Mayflower arrives from foreign shores. A young boy steps on the border, representing the intersection of the Wampanoag people in their Patuxet homeland and the Mayflower passengers. Inscriptions are “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “PATUXET,” and “$10.”
The U.S. $10 gold coin reverse depicts portraits of a Pilgrim man and woman, representing the beginnings of a transition from monarchy to democracy. The dual portraits symbolize a democratic organization, with their resolute expressions focused on a self-determined future. A pair of mayflower blossoms flank the design. Inscriptions are “1620,” “PLYMOUTH,” “2020,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” and “AU 24K 1/4 OZ.”
As with all UK currency, the obverse of the 24-karat gold coin and the .999 £2 silver coin from The Royal Mint (UK) feature the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Costello’s reverse design on these coins depicts the Mayflower bursting out of the frame as it sails through the rough seas.
The silver medal obverse features a Mayflower family bracing against the cold and windy weather, foreshadowing their coming hardships, while the ship is anchored in the harbor. A pair of mayflower blossoms flank the design. Inscriptions are “A CIVIL BODY POLITICK,” “1620- 2020,” and “MAYFLOWER COMPACT.”
The silver medal reverse depicts a Wampanoag man and woman employing a planting technique used to grow several crops that were staples for the Wampanoag people. This method helped keep the soil healthy, maintaining the resources for annual plantings and successful harvests. The inscription “SUSTAINERS OF LIFE” recalls not only this sustainable planting technique, but also the critical skills the Wampanoag people afforded to the Pilgrims by teaching them how to successfully plant and harvest the land. The additional inscription is “PEOPLE OF THE DAWN.”
The gold coins will be priced according to the range in which they appear on the Mint’s “Pricing of Numismatic Gold, Commemorative Gold, Platinum, and Palladium Products” table located here.
The on-sale dates for the Mayflower 400th Anniversary products will be published on the Mint’s Product Schedule here. To sign up for Remind Me alerts, visit:
