United States Mint Releases the Final America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ on April 8

WASHINGTON–The United States Mint (Mint) will accept orders for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ honoring the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama beginning on April 8 at noon EDT. This is the 56th and last five ounce silver coin to be released in the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program. Mintage is limited to 20,000 units, with no household order limit.

The coin’s reverse (tails) design depicts a Tuskegee Airman pilot suiting up to join the fight during World War II, with the Moton Field control tower in the background. The pilot looks upward with pride and confidence as two P-51 Mustangs pass overhead. The inscription “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” is arced across the top as a reference to the dual battles the Tuskegee Airmen fought—fascism abroad and racial discrimination at home. Inscriptions are “TUSKEGEE AIRMEN,” “ALABAMA,” “2021,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The obverse (heads) design features a 1932 restored portrait of George Washington.

Each encapsulated coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Rare 1822 Coin Graded by PCGS Sets World-Record Price for United States Mint Gold Coins

An 1822 Capped Bust Half Eagle Graded AU50 by Professional Coin Grading Service Sells for $8.4 Million in Stack’s Bowers Galleries Las Vegas Auction

(Santa Ana, California – March 29, 2021) – An 1822 Capped Bust Half Eagle graded AU50 by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) hammered as the world’s most valuable gold coin struck by the United States Mint. The rare gold coin, sold by Stack’s Bowers Galleries in Las Vegas alongside a PCGS coin show on March 25, 2021, took $8,400,000 (including a 20% buyer’s premium) and is the only example available for private ownership.

“We are thrilled to see this coin cross the auction block to set a world-record price,” says PCGS President Brett Charville. “We graded this coin AU50 when it was owned by the late, great collector D. Brent Pogue, and this specimen was formerly owned by the legendary Virgil Brand and Louis Eliasberg. The 1822 Capped Bust Half Eagle has been offered for sale only a few times in the last century, and therefore it’s no surprise this unique piece just became the most valuable gold coin ever made by the United States Mint.”

Despite a mintage of 17,796 specimens, the 1822 Half Eagle offers only three known survivors. Two are permanently housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., leaving just this one specimen for which collectors can vie. Being a necessary coin for any collector wanting a complete collection of half eagles, this 1822 trophy coin has long achieved outstanding auction prices. When it previously sold in 1982, it realized $687,500 – then an astronomical sum when no coin had yet crossed the seven-figure threshold at auction.

Among other prestigious PCGS-graded coins to exchange hands alongside the 1822 Capped Bust Half Eagle at the Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction in Las Vegas are a PCGS MS66 1797 Draped Bust Half Dollar, Small Eagle, considered one of the rarest of all half dollars and taking $1,680,000. Several other rarities took six figures, including a 1796 PCGS MS66RB Liberty Cap Half Cent that fetched $288,000 and an 1845-O PCGS MS63 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle that sold for $117,000.

Whitman Publishing Releases New Expanded Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins

(Pelham, Alabama) — Whitman Publishing announces the release of the newly updated and expanded Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins, a resource to help hobbyists keep track of their collections. The 304-page softcover book is available from booksellers and hobby shops nationwide, as well as online (including at www.Whitman.com), for $9.95.

The Check List and Record Book of United States and Canadian Coins is a convenient way to keep track of a coin collection. Its 6 x 9–inch size packs a large amount of information into a handy resource that can be carried in a bag or briefcase, or stored in a safe deposit box. Collectors take the book to coin shops and conventions while they’re on the hunt for new numismatic acquisitions, checking each box as they add a coin or upgrade to a better specimen. The book also has room to write notes on when and where specific coins were bought, their grades, pricing, and any other information the collector wants to record.

The Check List and Record Book features actual-size illustrations of each coin type, mintage records for circulation-strike and Proof coins, and coin-by-coin listings of every date and mint. The coins covered include U.S. half cents through gold double eagles, 1790s to date; classic and modern commemorative coins; government-issued commemorative sets; Proof sets and Mint sets; Canadian coins from the 1850s to date; and silver, gold, platinum, and palladium bullion coins. There are sections to keep track of collections of Hard Times tokens; Civil War tokens; other tokens and medals; Hawaiian coins; Puerto Rican coins; coins struck for the Philippines under U.S. sovereignty; misstrikes and error coins; and American Arts gold medallions. The Canadian chapters cover large cents; small cents; five-cent pieces and other circulating denominations; silver and modern coins; commemorative issues; dollar coins; and bullion.

Professional numismatists, appraisers, coin dealers, and experienced collectors know the importance of keeping an accurate inventory. Beth Deisher devotes an entire chapter to the subject in her award-winning book Cash In Your Coins: Selling the Rare Coins You’ve Inherited. Tom Bilotta, in Collecting Coins in Retirement: An Action Guide and Estate Advice for Hobbyists and Their Families, also stresses the value of maintaining accurate records.

“The Check List and Record Book helps you organize and build a better collection,” said Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker. “It can also be useful for tax and insurance purposes, and as a valuable record for your children and grandchildren to understand and appreciate your coins.”

The new Check List and Record Book covers the United States Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint up through 2021, with extra space to keep track of later coins.

Celebrate “Money, Big & BOLD” During 2021 National Coin Week

Activities Offer Hobbyists a Chance to Win Prizes

National Coin Week 2021

Collecting silver dollars has long been a favorite of coin collectors. One hundred years ago, the U.S. Mint reintroduced the Morgan dollar to circulation after a 16-year absence. Later that year, production began on a new silver coin, the Peace dollar. Fifty years ago, minting of the Eisenhower dollar commenced. These numismatic milestones will be celebrated during the 98th annual National Coin Week, April 18-24, with the theme, “Money, Big & BOLD.”

Sponsored by the nonprofit American Numismatic Association (ANA) to foster the enjoyment of coins and paper money collecting, National Coin Week celebrates the historical, cultural, artistic and economic importance of money.

The ANA will host a variety of National Coin Week online activities prior to and during the week-long event:

  • A writing challenge where members can share their research and big, bold collections on the ANA Blog for a chance to win a 2021 Morgan or Peace dollar.
  • A youth activity to create something edible – sweet or savory – that resembles money.
  • ANA eLearning Academy webinars each day with topics focusing on the Morgan, Peace and Eisenhower dollars, the coinage of Julius Caesar, the Lafayette dollar, the 1913 Federal Reserve Act and more.
  • Online daily trivia challenges. Every day of National Coin Week, a new question will be released on the ANA’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and online at www.NationalCoinWeek.org. Participants submit their answers online for a chance to win prizes.
  • The annual coin club trivia challenge, where ANA member clubs test their numismatic knowledge and compete for prizes.
  • Online resources including articles from The Numismatist, promotional documents, links and suggestions from the ANA library.

“National Coin Week is a great time to spread the word about the joys of collecting coins and paper money,” says National Coin Week coordinator Andy Dickes. “We will be celebrating big, bold coins, designs and ideas during the week and all year long.”

Prizes for the design contest and club trivia challenge include:

  • Grand prize – American Eagle 2021 one-tenth ounce gold proof $5 coin
  • Second prize – 2021 Morgan or Peace Silver Dollar (club choice)
  • Third prize – 2021 Morgan or Peace Silver Dollar

Other prizes, including U.S. Mint 2021 proof sets, will be awarded as well.
