Renowned Silver Dollar Expert to Hand Sign NGC Labels

Wayne Miller, whose groundbreaking books on Morgan and Peace Dollars have guided numismatists for decades, is joining a prestigious group of people who hand sign certification labels exclusively for NGC.

The label that Miller will sign features an image of his famous work, “The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook,” first published in 1983. Miller also wrote “An Analysis of Morgan and Peace Dollars,” first published in 1976.

Miller’s expertise and passion for the coins also resulted in a personal collection of Morgan and Peace Dollars that was widely regarded as the finest of its kind and which was sold in 1986 for a then-record $1.2 million.

“Wayne Miller is the ‘King of Silver Dollars,’” NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer Mark Salzberg said. “He was a true visionary and recognized the rarity and value of Prooflike and Deep Prooflike silver dollars long before anyone else. His textbook was invaluable to me at the very beginning of my career, guiding me to silver dollars, especially PL and DPL ones. It is an honor to be able to work with him.”

United States Mint – Connecting America through Coins

PCGS partners with Basketball Hall of Fame on upcoming U.S. coins

As its exclusive grading service, PCGS will create special HOF inserts for certified 2020 basketball commemorative coins

Newport Beach, CA (Sept.16, 2019) – Professional Coin Grading Service (PSGS, www.PCGS.com) is partnering with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (www.HoopHall.com) on a 2020 basketball commemorative coin program.

The planned $5 denomination gold, $1 silver and 50-cent clad legal tender coins to be struck by the United States Mint will honor the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s 60th anniversary. PCGS will be creating customized designs for encapsulation inserts in conjunction with the Springfield, Mass.-based museum.

“We are extremely proud to be the Exclusive Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coin Grading and Authentication Partner,” said PCGS President Brett Charville. “This is a distinct privilege and one we look forward to maintaining for years to come.”

According to the Mint, the dome-shaped coins will be curved to resemble a basketball. The obverse will feature three basketball players – a woman and two men, one of which is a Paralympian in a wheelchair — and all are laying up the same basketball. The reverse depicts a ball going into a hoop.

Sales from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s official anniversary coin – which launches next spring – could provide significant fundraising opportunities for the Hall. The Mint’s program calls for the production of up to 50,000 gold coins, 400,000 silver coins and 750,000 clad coins.

“It is an honor for Collectors Universe to work with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on this 2020 commemorative coin project,” stated Collectors Universe CEO Joe Orlando. “Not only do we believe this specially designed coin will appeal to the numismatic and sports collector communities alike domestically, the worldwide popularity of the sport opens the door to international opportunities. In addition to creating customized designs to enhance the presentation of these coins, we intend on using the power of our leading PCGS and PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator www.PSAcard.com) brands to help broaden the appeal of these collector items.”

The Hall of Fame is authorized to receive surcharges from the sale of the coins in the amount of $35 per gold coin, $10 per silver and $5 per clad.

United States Mint News Release: 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Coin Designs

SPPRINGFIELD, MA — The United States Mint (Mint) unveiled designs for the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Coin Program today during the 2019 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony at Springfield Symphony Hall.

The designs will be featured on three dome-shaped coins: a $5 gold, a $1 silver, and a half-dollar clad. Public Law 115-343 authorizes the minting and issuance of these coins in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The common obverse (heads) design was selected from a public competition as required by the authorizing legislation. The winning design, by Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz, portrays the fast pace, intensity, and hands-on action of a basketball game—the constant, competitive struggle for possession of the ball and the skill required to clear the hoop. The design features three players reaching for the ball in unison, reflecting how the sport of basketball has brought together diverse people around the world through a simple, universal, and unifying athletic experience. Their arms are slightly elongated to emphasize the full exertion of physical and mental energy required to excel in this sport. The rim and net are subtle background design elements complementing the three players. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2020.”

The common reverse design, by AIP artist Donna Weaver, depicts a basketball about to pass through the net, with the inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Additional inscriptions include “FIVE DOLLARS” on the gold coin, “ONE DOLLAR” on the silver dollar, and “HALF DOLLAR” on the clad coin.

Line art of both designs is available here.

The legislation authorizes the Mint to strike and issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half–dollar clad coins. Surcharges collected from coin sales—$35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each half–dollar coin—are authorized to be paid to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to fund an endowment that will enable increased operations and educational programming.
