The Royal Mint celebrates the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day with a commemorative 50p coin

The Royal Mint, the Original Maker of UK coins, has today launch a new commemorative coin celebrating a British milestone – the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day. The introduction of a new decimal currency was formally adopted on 15th February, 1971 and was one of the largest and most intensive public awareness campaigns ever staged by the government.

The new commemorative coin celebrates this monumental moment in history with a design that conveys the transition from pre-decimal to decimal coins. The design, created by Royal Mint designer Dominique Evans, adds nostalgia to the occasion by featuring a whole range of denominations together for the basis of the design.

Dominique, comments on her design, “I have always had such a fondness for coins, their designs and individuality. Even though people understood the reason for Decimal Day, they had and still have a fondness for the pre-decimal coins. Those pre-decimal coins can still be found all over the country, in random jumbles in boxes and drawers, which led me to place together the denominations as if you had just found them and were looking at them from above. The sweet wren peeks out from under the crown of a threepence, sitting alongside the rose of the sixpence – all below the iconic Britannia.”

Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of the Consumer Division at The Royal Mint said, “This year marks a significant anniversary in The Royal Mint’s 1,100-year history, the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day. In 1966, the decision was made to evolve the nation’s coinage from pounds, shillings and pence to a new decimal currency. This was a major logistical exercise that impacted on every person in the country and we now celebrate this historic moment on a commemorative 50p coin with a design that brings a sense of nostalgia to the occasion.

“On the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day, we will also be offering collectors an opportunity to own a Strike-on-the Day Gold Proof 50p coin which features selected frosting, enhancing details within the design. This is the first time we have produced a strike on the day 50p coin and is a truly unique way to mark 50 years since this important moment in the nation’s coinage.”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day, The Royal Mint are also appealing for coin collectors across the nation to share images of their coin collections. Coin collectors are able to upload images of their coin collections onto The Royal Mint website.

On 15th February 1971, the United Kingdom’s coinage evolved from the centuries-old system of pounds, shillings and pence to a new decimal currency. Far from being an overnight switch, decimalisation took many years of careful planning and also involved a huge information campaign. In order to achieve the monumental challenge of striking the new coins, a new factory was required along with new machinery, production techniques and processes.

The sheer volume of coins required for that changeover meant that The Royal Mint needed to move location from Tower Hill in London to a new production facility. In 1968 the new Royal Mint site in Llantrisant, South Wales was opened by Her Majesty The Queen and the first of almost six billion coins required for decimalisation went into production.

The first of the new coins, the 5p and 10p, entered circulation in April 1968. They bore new heraldic designs, yet corresponded exactly in size and value to the shillings and florins and, so, were able to run easily alongside them as their ‘decimal twins’.

The commemorative set will be available to purchase from www.royalmint.com in a range of precious metal and base proof finishes, prices start from £10.

ANA College Scholarships Available to Young Collectors

Applications for college scholarships provided by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) are being accepted through March 12. The scholarship fund was established in 2014 to provide a graduating high school senior who is also a member of the ANA with $1,000 to use at the university, community college, or trade school of the student’s choice. Scholarship winners will be chosen based on numismatic merit and financial need.

The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, or supplies directly related to class requirements. Up to two scholarships may be awarded annually. Students with a full class schedule, who maintain a B average throughout their higher education, can receive the $1,000 scholarship up to four years.

ANA Scholarship“The ANA’s primary goal is education,” said Rod Gillis, the ANA’s education director. “Generally, students who are involved in numismatics are the best and brightest scholars. It stands to reason that we should do all that we can to invest in our members at such a critical time in their lives.”

Besides holding membership in the ANA, applicants must be a graduating high school senior with a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.0. The winning students may use the scholarship at any two- or four-year college, university, or trade school within the United States.

Two letters of reference must be sent on the applicant’s behalf. The authors of the references may not be family members. Reference letters must be submitted by the person writing the reference, not the scholarship applicant, and must be received at the ANA by March 12.

The first scholarship was graciously underwritten by Brian Fanton, ANA Education & Young Numismatist Committee Chair and former ANA Governor, and Walter Ostromecki Jr., ANA Governor and past President. Funds for future scholarships will be raised through donations.

Applications must be postmarked by March 12, 2020. Completed applications and references should be sent to:

Phoenix 2021 National Money Show Officially Cancelled

Coronavirus also impacts planning for 2021 Summer Seminar

The American Numismatic Association (ANA) Board of Governors voted on Dec. 16 to officially cancel the Phoenix National Money Show®, scheduled for Mar. 11-13, 2021, due to heightened coronavirus concerns. The vote was 7-2, with the majority of the Board expressing concerns about the Association’s inability to assure the safety of its members, dealers, staff and visitors.

Because of Arizona’s current restrictions on indoor gatherings, the show would have been significantly smaller had the Board voted to move forward. The bourse would have been reduced in size, and educational programming and meetings would have moved online. The Phoenix Convention Center informed the ANA the day after its Board meeting that all events through February 28, 2021, would be cancelled, leaving events such as the Association’s National Money Show in mid-March in an uncertain situation.

“Although we share the disappointment of collectors and dealers in cancelling the Phoenix National Money Show, it is the right decision given the wide range of uncertainties we currently face,” says ANA Executive Director Kim Kiick. “We’re appreciative of Kagin’s Auctions, the official convention auctioneer, for their understanding and support of this decision.”

Kiick indicated the ANA will explore the feasibility of hosting a virtual conference in May.

Dealers who have reserved tables for the show will be contacted directly by the ANA convention team. “To mitigate the influx of calls and emails, dealers will be contacted by phone within the next week to discuss the option of a future credit towards an ANA show or a refund,” says Brianna Victor, ANA events director.

Hotel room reservations within the reserved block in the Hyatt Regency Phoenix (877-803-7534) and Hampton Inn & Suites (602-710-1240), along with reservations made with lodging properties outside the block, will need to be cancelled by collectors directly with the properties.

The Board will explore the possibility of revisiting Phoenix for a future National Money Show – possibly as early as March 2023 – to capitalize on the planning from the staff and local host committee that already was in place, and to avoid a cancellation penalty from the convention center.

2021 Summer Seminar Planning Complicated by Coronavirus

Also discussed at the Dec. 16 ANA Board meeting was the status of the 2021 Summer Seminar, scheduled for June 19-24 (Session 1) and June 26-July 1 (Session 2).

Colorado College – the site of the annual Summer Seminar for decades – informed the ANA recently that it will not be hosting events on its campus in 2021 due to the coronavirus, compelling the ANA to research alternative locations. (The Colorado College campus is adjacent to ANA headquarters.)

Two alternative locations were presented to the Board for consideration: The Antlers (a Wyndham Hotel) in Colorado Springs – located a mere 8 blocks from the ANA, and the University of Denver (DU) – a 35-minute drive from Denver International Airport. The Board recognized the advantage of having the Summer Seminar in close proximity to ANA headquarters to allow students access to its facilities. However, the $128,000 deficit the ANA would incur to host the event at The Antlers was deemed too big of a hit to the Association’s budget, which is already challenged due to the cancellation of the 2020 World’s Fair of Money® and the 2021 National Money Show. The Board voted 9-0 to eliminate The Antlers from consideration.

According to ANA Executive Director Kiick, in order to plan appropriately for the event, the Board will need to vote at its Jan. 19 meeting whether it prefers to move the event to DU or conduct the event online.

ICTA Announces New Executive Director

The Industry Council for Tangible Assets today announced that Jimmy Hayes will step down as executive director at the end of the year, and its board of directors has appointed David Crenshaw as the new executive director, effective January 1, 2021.

Of the change, Hayes said, “I have very much enjoyed my tenure as executive director. I appreciate ICTA’s historic role as a watchdog for the industry, but with the Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision, we have realized a need for a watchdog for the collector as well. David Crenshaw has the experience and perspective of both a dealer and a collector to lead and strengthen our organization in its mission. Thanks to all the dealers and collectors with whom I have worked.”

Hayes is returning to the Coalition for Equitable Regulation and Taxation (CERT) as a consultant, where he intends to focus on legislative initiatives related to the numismatic and bullion marketplace. CERT is a separate entity that functions as the lobbying arm of ICTA.

“We are fortunate to have someone of David Crenshaw’s caliber and experience step up to lead ICTA,” said board chair John Brush. “He is a strong communicator, who is member-focused and has deep leadership capabilities. Furthermore, as ICTA’s chief operating officer for the past seven years, Crenshaw has a solid understanding of our mission.” Speaking on behalf of the board, Brush added, “We have very much appreciated Crenshaw’s efforts and his service to ICTA since he joined us in 2013. His experience will be a great asset to the association and will build off the momentum that Hayes left us.”

Crenshaw said, “I am honored and excited to lead ICTA. I am looking forward to working with our dedicated board of directors and members. Together, we will continue to build upon ICTA’s successful history, focused on promoting and safeguarding the interests of its members.”

The Royal Mint sends a coin into space in honour of ‘Starman’ David Bowie

The Royal Mint, the Original Maker of UK coins, has today launched a commemorative coin celebrating the career of one of Britain’s most enduring musical icons – David Bowie.

It is the first time that a UK coin has been sent into space, and celebrates the intergalactic legacy of David Bowie and his hits including Starman, Life on Mars? and Space Oddity. The coin reached 35,656m and orbited the Earth’s atmosphere for 45 minutes before safely descending back to Britain. The coin will now be offered as a competition prize for David Bowie fans via The Royal Mint’s Facebook page.

Bowie Coin in space

Bowie Coin in space

The David Bowie commemorative coin is the third in The Royal Mint’s ‘Music Legends’ collection, and follows coins in honour of Queen and Elton John. The latest coin celebrates rock’s definitive chameleon with a design inspired by an image of David Bowie from his time spent living and recording in Berlin. The coin’s design includes the iconic lightning bolt motif from Aladdin Sane, and captures Bowie’s career journey.

Using the latest innovative technology and manufacturing techniques, the lightning bolt that features on a number of the special edition coins appears laced with stardust to create a glitter effect – elevating the stunning detail of the coin.

Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “We are thrilled to unveil the third coin in The Royal Mint’s ‘Music Legends’ series, honouring the intergalactic legacy and career of David Bowie. In recognition of Bowie’s first hit single ‘Space Oddity’, we felt it was fitting to send his coin into space and celebrate the Starman in his own pioneering fashion. David Bowie’s music has inspired and influenced generations of musicians and we hope this commemorative coin will be cherished by fans around the world.”

Born in Brixton, South London in 1947, Bowie started life as David Robert Jones. By the time he was 19 he had taken on his iconic name and began pursuing a career in pop music. Five days ahead of the Apollo 11 launch in July 1969, ‘Space Oddity’ was released in the United Kingdom. The single reached number five in the charts, making it Bowie’s first success as a writer and performer. David Bowie’s influence can be seen and heard everywhere and he continues to inspire hundreds of millions of musicians worldwide.

Available as limited-edition precious metal Proof editions and a standard Brilliant Uncirculated edition, the Brilliant Uncirculated coin is also available in three different slipcase covers exclusive to The Royal Mint – a fitting tribute to the career of one of British music’s most enduring icons. View the full collection on The Royal Mint’s website www.royalmint.com/DavidBowie.

Country Music Legend Larry Gatlin Goes For The Gold On New 1st National Reserve Website

(Beaumont, Texas) December 2, 2020 — Legendary country and gospel music singer and songwriter Larry Gatlin talks about owning gold in a video on the redesigned website of precious metals and rare coins dealership 1st National Reserve (www.1stNationalReserve.com) of Beaumont, Texas.

In the brief, entertaining video, Texas native and 1st National Reserve customer Gatlin explains he should have followed the recommendations of financial advisors to purchase gold when it was about $300 an ounce in 1979 after the success of his #1 hit song, “All The Gold In California.”

Instead, he explained in September, “I bought horses and cows and cars and guitars and a lot of other stuff. I mean, a lot of other stuff. Now, gold is over $1,900 an ounce while the horses are dead, the cows are dead, the cars won’t run and the guitars are, well, just guitars. The bad news: I didn’t buy gold. The good news: now I own gold and I’m going to buy more from the experts at 1st National Reserve,” he states.

In addition to the video, the new website provides up-to-date listings about the company’s current precious metals and numismatic offerings for online shopping as well as useful information about the enjoyment of coin collecting.

“We’re committed to increasing transparency and clarity in our offerings while remaining at the forefront of the evolving collectible coin marketplace. We feel confident that our new website will be a powerful tool to showcase our distinctive gold and silver bullion and rare coin offerings, and help interested parties make informed decisions when choosing to buy numismatic and precious metals products,” explains Ryan Verde, 1st National Reserve’s Manager.

“Our site’s information on coin buying, coin grading and other numismatic subjects is substantial. We pride ourselves on providing a large amount of informative, award-winning content relative to the coin and bullion market to help prospective collectors learn more about the hobby of coin collecting,” adds Verde.
